Glad you like the North West of Scotland folks. Although I'm now based in Skye I'm from Ullapool and cover the whole area as part of my job. My favourite mountain is Suilven, pronounced "soolivan". It's about 25 miles north of Ullapool on the Lochinver road. Anyway, back to the song; The Alexander Brothers did it on one of their LPs. |

When I used to live in Ullapool, I did a sunday morning radio programme on Lochbroom FM called the "Sunday Strupag" and the name kind of stuck. Cuillin FM are going to start up shortly but the lady in charge will not have Sunday programmes at the moment so it will be a Tuesday Night Strupag. Doesn't have the same ring to it though. Any suggestions? To digress and veer back towards the thread, the words are none to apt up here where the London gent,who considers himself to be chief of the Clan MacLeod, decided that the whole Cuillin mountain range was his and put them up for sale for around £9 million. There was a feeble challenge against him but the government did a shady deal with him. To be fair though, there's no problem with access to the vast majority of Scottish mountains so who cares who owns them! |

In 1968 a friend and I quit our jobs with IBM and went on a 3 month trip across the pond. Started in the British Isles, among other things we took a train (we had BritRail Passes & Eurail passes) to Scotland and rented a car to drive to Skye. I was always on the lookout for folk music and dance events. After we visited Blair Atholl Castle, we drove into Pitlochry and I saw a sign for a folk music evening. Could, but won't, tell lovely stories about the friendly people of Pitlochry and how we found a room.... The relevant thing here is that the last song of the evening was "These Are My Mountains." It was announced that the song had just won the above mentioned contest as the best new Scottish folk song. The entire audience sang along. Lovely. Since then I've always loved it. |

Copyright now extends 75 yrs past the author's death. Usually you don't work directly with the composer/lyricist, but with the Fox Agency or BMI or ASCAP. If I'm not mistaken, a demo disc or an album you would just pass out free to friends and fans would not require the royalties be paid or permission granted. Is this right? |

When you or anyone else write a song, poem, book, or play, YOU OWN IT. You don't have to file for copyright or put magical notices on it, you own it. You hold legal title to it like a deed, and you control all commercial use of it (recordings, airplay, and paid-ticket concerts) during your entire lifetime and 75 years thereafter without your express permission. Unless you specifically declare to the world that it is public domain and you want everyone to do whatever they want with it. (sometimes people donate songs to the world in that way but not very often). So unless you can get Jim to say to you "geez, mate, I actually put that into the public domain in '93", then IT'S NOT! And in order that Jim or whoever doesn't have to spend 3 days a week negotiating credit arrangements and 6 cent per disc royalties with every tom dick and harry, he allows the Harry Fox Agency or whoever administer it. They used to let publishers do it directly but they come and go like the wind so now they have these big hairy agencies. It's no big deal, you sign up for however many copies you plan to make and pay x cents a copy or whatever. If you're hell bent on not dealing with it, fine. Record stuff you write yourself or ancient stuff where there are no pesky authors holding copyright. If you still want to use the work of 20th century composers/lyricists then quit trying to weasel out of what you need to do just cause you just don't feel like compensating somebody for their stuff. |
