I can't remember where I found it, but a year ago, I was looking and did find a MIDI file of the tune. At the time I didn't have a way of playing it. I don't think I have it here.

Jim did you write 'For These are my Mountains' ? A colleague of mine, her granny has died and that was her favourite song. I've just supplied the words from Mudcat for her but doesn't mention you as author, just thought it was one of yours.

Hi MC Fat, no I didn't write it, it was written by Jimmy Copeland, the actor.

Songfile.com, the Website of the Harry Fox Agency, attributes the song to "Allan Copeland." My guess is that Allan and Jimmy may well be one and the same person.

If Jimmy Copeland wrote, Loch Maree, by God thats inventive songwriting (tee hee), cos it's our favourite part of the world, and we are up around that area at least three times a year, for ten years, and have christened the Loch Midge City, my God I thought we were used to them, but BELIEVE ME, be warned if you go there!!!
Mind you, the view from the far "high end" is STUPENDOUS, and one of the wifes favourites!!!

Anyone else agree??

cheers

I was up there last weekend, for the first time: Loch Maree, Loch Broom, Gairloch, Ullapool, Beauly [beau lieu -beautiful place!], etc and yes the scenery is stupendous.

Sadly, I'm not a fan of These Are My Mountains, though Aunt Bella is brilliant!

I seem to remember that the song won a competition on either BBC Scoland or STV called "Song for Scotland" in the 70's or is that just my memory palying tricks again?
Glad you like the North West of Scotland folks. Although I'm now based in Skye I'm from Ullapool and cover the whole area as part of my job.
My favourite mountain is Suilven, pronounced "soolivan". It's about 25 miles north of Ullapool on the Lochinver road.
Anyway, back to the song; The Alexander Brothers did it on one of their LPs.

THESE ARE MY MOUNTAINS by J Copeland Publisher Peers Music Ltd

1.For fame and for fortune,
I wandered the earth
And now I've come back to
This land of my birth
I've brought back my treasures
But only to find
They're less than the pleasures
I first left behind

For these are my mountains, And this is my glen
The braes of my childhood, Will know me again
No land's ever claimed me, Tho'far I did roam
For these are my mountains, And I'm going home.

2.The burn by the road sings,
at my going by
The whaup o'er the head wings
With welcoming cry
The loch where the scart flies
At last I can see
Its here where my heart lies
It's here I'll be free
Chorus

3.Kind faces will greet me
And welcome me in
And how they will greet me
My ain kith and kin
This night round the ingle
Old songs will be sung
At last I'll be hearing
My ain mother tongue.

Chorus

Hi MCF
It is indeed! When I used to live in Ullapool, I did a sunday morning radio programme on Lochbroom FM called the "Sunday Strupag" and the name kind of stuck.
Cuillin FM are going to start up shortly but the lady in charge will not have Sunday programmes at the moment so it will be a Tuesday Night Strupag. Doesn't have the same ring to it though. Any suggestions?
To digress and veer back towards the thread, the words are none to apt up here where the London gent, who considers himself to be chief of the Clan MacLeod, decided that the whole Cuillin mountain range was his and put them up for sale for around £9 million.
There was a feeble challenge against him but the government did a shady deal with him.
To be fair though, there's no problem with access to the vast majority of Scottish mountains so who cares who owns them!

Thanks to you Jim, Jimmy Copeland will be properly acknowledged on the programme for our upcoming Summer concert next week at St Augustine's Catholic Church in High Wycombe, Bucks. The area is noted for its rolling Chilterns hills, but we'll have your mountains in mind when our male voice choir give their rendering of 'These Are My Mountains'. BTW, the concert is on Friday 11th June, doors opening at about 6:30pm.

First time I've seen this thread.

In 1968 a friend and I quit our jobs with IBM and went on a 3 month trip across the pond. Started in the British Isles, among other things we took a train (we had BritRail Passes & Eurail passes) to Scotland and rented a car to drive to Skye.

I was always on the lookout for folk music and dance events. After we visited Blair Atholl Castle, we drove into Pitlochry and I saw a sign for a folk music evening. Could, but won't, tell lovely stories about the friendly people of Pitlochry and how we found a room.... The relevant thing here is that the last song of the evening was "These Are My Mountains." It was announced that the song had just won the above mentioned contest as the best new Scottish folk song. The entire audience sang along. Lovely. Since then I've always loved it.

Bruce Millers in Aberdeen have the sheet music. Jim Mclean is correct with the credits. Jim Copland (note his name is actually spelt without the "e" even though the credits use Copland) lives in Aberdeen.

If I were to make my own recording of this song, would I need to get in touch with Jim Copeland and ask permission, or would simply crediting the lyrics to him be enough? I am currently putting ideas together for my first album, and I am trying to find songs that are meaningful, but can be used either free, or very inexpensive and I do not want to rip anyone off.

Fiery, if you are going to sell the album then you need to make royalty arrangements with whoever handles the rights to the songs of ANY living authors, and quite a few dead ones. Copyright now extends 75 yrs past the author's death. Usually you don't work directly with the composer/lyricist, but with the Fox Agency or BMI or ASCAP.

If I'm not mistaken, a demo disc or an album you would just pass out free to friends and fans would not require the royalties be paid or permission granted. Is this right?

Thanks for the info mate. Just I would really like to know if it's in the public domain. Obviuosly I would credit the lyrics to jim, but its gonna be mostly traditional/PD stuff on the album, with my own kinda variations. I really don't know much about copyright, have tried looking at copyright websites but they are all double dutch to me. what is the Fox Agency, BMI ASCAP? Are they recording agencies? I don't want to go through an agency, I wanna do it off my own back as I have never produced a CD befor ein my life.

I would say it is NOT puhlic domain as it wouldn't be 75 years after the writer's death.

Okay, slick, here's the deal, and now you can stop batting your eyes and claiming you're exempt from copyright laws cause you don't feel like fooling with it.

When you or anyone else write a song, poem, book, or play, YOU OWN IT.   You don't have to file for copyright or put magical notices on it, you own it. You hold legal title to it like a deed, and you control all commercial use of it (recordings, airplay, and paid-ticket concerts) during your entire lifetime and 75 years thereafter without your express permission. Unless you specifically declare to the world that it is public domain and you want everyone to do whatever they want with it. (sometimes people donate songs to the world in that way but not very often).

So unless you can get Jim to say to you "geez, mate, I actually put that into the public domain in '93", then IT'S NOT! And in order that Jim or whoever doesn't have to spend 3 days a week negotiating credit arrangements and 6 cent per disc royalties with every tom dick and harry, he allows the Harry Fox Agency or whoever administer it. They used to let publishers do it directly but they come and go like the wind so now they have these big hairy agencies. It's no big deal, you sign up for however many copies you plan to make and pay x cents a copy or whatever.

If you're hell bent on not dealing with it, fine. Record stuff you write yourself or ancient stuff where there are no pesky authors holding copyright. If you still want to use the work of 20th century composers/lyricists then quit trying to weasel out of what you need to do just cause you just don't feel like compensating somebody for their stuff.

Eh, what the hell is your problem? In no way did I say I was exempy from copyright laws! I clearly said I didn't want to rip anyone off, and I was merely enquiring if it was in the public domain. I don't know the first thing about copyright, and you jump down my throat because I was actually TRYING to find out more about it, rather than just say I don't give a fuck and go ahead and do it. I think you should be encouraging new musicians rather than scaring them away. THis is the first few tiems Ive posted on Mudcat, and I can say it will be the last if their are people like you going about...

...oh, and DONT CALL ME SLICK!!!!

Please ignore GUEST postings when they give no name. Just don't bother. Unfortunately there are ALWAYS going to be someone who reacts negatively to anyone's postings. Sorry about that. I hope your questions were answered by the other queries.

Basically, the song was written in the late 1960s. Even if the author had died the very next day, it still hasn't been 75 years since then so it wouldn't be in Public Domain. Therefore you must deal with licencing the song. It's only pennies per CD.

Jimmy Copeland Poems
I first heard the poem The junior cup final told by Ed Miller From Edingburgh, now Austin, Texas, back in the 70's, when he gigged in our Folkclub de Plus in Groningen, Holland....
From a website called the scribblers sanctuary i learnt that the poems originally appeared in the book The Shoogly Table, now out of print.
(but maybe his is a new thread?)

THE JUNIOR'S CUP FINAL
by Jimmy Copeland

The day of the Junior's Cup Final
Is a day I will never forget
For the other side's goalie was famous
He had never let one past him yet!

And on me all my team were dependin'
As the striker to lead the attack
For our manager said -- nae defendin'
Jist get in therr an' nae haudin' back!

From the kick-off I tore down the middle
An' my wingers baith matched me wi' speed
Then I passed it oot left frae a dribble
An' he lobbed -- an' I nodded ma heid!

One-Nil -- that was just the beginnin'
I knew then that vict'ry was mine
There was never no doubt who was winnin'
By the half I had nodded in nine!

But I must hand it out to our wingers
They had that poor goalie near deid
The pair o' them fair went thir dingers
When they lobbed -- I jist nodded ma heid!

That goalie was full of dejection
For we kept on increasin' our lead
He aye dived in the other direction
As I nodded it in wi' ma heid!

At the whistle that goalie was greetin'
He never had no chance at all
Twenty goals is how much he was beaten
All by me and my noddin' the ball!

Well, I met that poor goalie next mornin'
And I hoped he would not make a fuss
So I gave him a nod in the passin'
And he went and dived under a bus!!!

I didn't know that poem but I knew the joke it was based on. Willie Thornton was the famous 'header' but I don't remember who the goalie was. The story was that after a famous victory when Willie headed in a few gaols, he met the goalie in the street and nodded to him and Jimmy's poem tells the punch line.

Contact the publishers in the first instance, Kerr's Music Corp. who still exist. They own the rights. It's often wrongly put down as trad. due to ignorance, and overfamiliarity when it is a modern Scottish copyright work, often now nicked by Irish country singers.
