04 Jun 04 - 08:27 PM (#1200684) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Jubilation t. cornpone (Li'l Abner) From: Lin in Kansas Here ya go. Lin From here. Track Title: Jubilation T. Cornpone Prime Artist: Stubby Kaye Lyrics by: Johnny Mercer Music by: Gene de Paul From the Show: L'il Abner 1956 (S) 1959 (M) When we fought the Yankees and annihilation was near, Who was there to lead the charge that took us safe to the rear? Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone; Old "Toot your own horn - pone." Jubilation T. Cornpone, a man who knew no fear! When we almost had 'em but the issue still was in doubt, Who suggested the retreat that turned it into a rout? Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone; Old "Tattered and torn - pone." Jubilation T. Cornpone, he kept us hidin' out! With our ammunition gone and faced with utter defeat, Who was it that burned the crops and left us nothing to eat? Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone; Old "September Morn - pone." Jubilation T. Cornpone, the pants blown off his seat! HURRAY! When it seemed like our brave boys would keep on fighting for months, Who took pity on them and ca-pit-u-lated at once? Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone; Unshaven and shorn - pone. Jubilation T. Cornpone, he weren't nobody's dunce! Who went re-con-noiter-ing to flank the enemy's rear, Circled through the piney woods, and disappeared for a year? Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone; Old "Treat 'em with scorn - pone." Jubilation T. Cornpone, the missing mountaineer! Who became so famous with a reputation so great, That he ran for president and didn't carry a state? Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone; Old "Wouldn't be sworn - pone." Jubilation T. Cornpone, he made the country wait! Stonewall Jackson got his name by standing firm in the fray. Who was known to all his men as good ol' "Paper Mache?" Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone; ***** Jubilation T. Cornpone, he really saved the day! REPRISE ( FINALE ): Though he's gone to his reward, his mighty torch is still lit. First in war. First in peace. First to holler, "I quit!" Jubilation T. Cornpone; ***** Jubilation T. Cornpone, he really saved the day! ___________________________________________________- MOVIE VERSES: History says that General Grant was pretty good with a jug, Who went drink for drink with him and wound up under the rug? Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone; Passed out until morn - pone. Jubilation T. Cornpone, his whiskers in his mug! Hearing that a Northern spy had come to town for the night, Who gained entrance to her room and lost the glorious fight? Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone; Old "Weary and worn - pone." Jubilation T. Cornpone, he fought all through the night! There at Appomatox Lee and Grant were present, of course. As Lee swept a tear away, who swept the back of his horse? Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone; ***** Jubilation T. Cornpone, a picture of remorse! |

05 Jun 04 - 11:23 AM (#1200955) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Jubilation t. cornpone (Li'l Abner) From: Joe Offer Lin, I think that most times when chords are requested, it's also appropriate to furnish lyrics in the same thread. I hate it when I find chords posted here for a song I'm seeking, and then find the lyrics were never posted. As I see it, when we reply to a request, our reply is for the good of everyone, not just for the requestor. I had no idea that Johnny Mercer wrote lyrics for Lil' Abner. Mercer is one of my favorites. -Joe Offer- |

I would avoid the other CDs Both VHS and CD are shown on this link: Li'l Abner VHS & Soundtrack Thanks for the lyrics and link Lin. Cruiser |

The original Stubby Kaye version is in the key of B--C is only a half-step off, and probably a bit easier to work with-- |

06 Jun 04 - 05:26 PM (#1201471) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Jubilation T. Cornpone (Li'l Abner) From: M.Ted Actually, the recorded arrangement starts with a couple verses in B, then modulates to C, back to B, to C, and ends up in D. It isn't necessary to modulate, because the melody is the same for every verse--it is just one of the theatrical arrangement tricks that is used to keep the audiences interested. |

Cornpone (Li'l Abner) From: M.Ted Al Capp went from liberal to hippie/student/protester-hating reactionary in the 60's--he toured college campuses, agressively mocking the anti-war movement--I recollect that this stopped rather abruptly when he was charged with attempting to rape a co-ed at the University of Wisconsin, where, even in those days, they frowned on such things-- |

You think I really wanted to sleep with that dog? I mean gimme a break. Hell, in real life John Lennon and I were close as could be. We were like brothers. That bedroom scene was all staged. John and I, not to mention Yoko, so I won't had quite a few long hard laughs about that over the years. Then he had to get himself assasinated. Damn hippy liverpudlian. Just couldn't keep his mouth shut. |

10 Jan 05 - 09:31 AM (#1375755) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Jubilation T. Cornpone (Li'l Abner) From: GUEST,Rapaire I understood at the time that a female member of the SDS allowed herself to be taken by Capp to his room when he was speaking at the U. of Wisconsin (Madison). He was "up" for oral sex, which she had led him to believe would be provided, and she then accused him of sodomy. This was done because he had become "reactionary" and it destroyed his reputation. He later wrote about it in a book I have somewhere and can't find (of course). |
