04 Jun 04 - 04:25 PM (#1200537) Subject: BS: The case of the missing sturgeon From: Flash Company Story in the paper today of a fisherman who caught a sturgeon, followed all the procedure of advising the Crown Office and was advised to 'Dispose of it as he thought fit'. Part way through the auction at Plymouth, in came the cops to arrest everyone in sight. It is apparently an offence to sell a sturgeon. Unfortunately, no-one seems to have told the Queen! However, to add to the fun, when they came to take the fish as evidence, it had disappeared! Oops. They are now threatening action against every one in sight. I am off to Cornwall in the morning, but if Aine would like to take this one on as a Song Challenge, the story was in the Daily Mail. FC |

By what right do these individuals dictate what can/cannot be taken from the oceans & make ordinary fishers, hunters etc into criminals? Comments? |

Apparently the royals aren't mad about sturgeon, but do like a kipper. Sam's Sturgeon monologue was recorded by Stanley Holloway, attributed to Ashley-Sterne. |

But boy, are they ugly! When I was a child, at the mouth of the Columbia River, they used to get caught in the tide pools at low tide. We used to torment the monsters with sticks. Great fun! They would glub, glub around and flip from side to side. We thought we were very brave. |

06 Jun 04 - 07:26 PM (#1201539) Subject: RE: BS: The case of the missing sturgeon From: Bee-dubya-ell The point of contention seems to be that the fisherman was heeding a 14th century law which requires that fishermen give the crown first dibs on sturgeon, but that law has been made obsolete by a more recent law declaring the sturgeon a protected species and making its sale illegal. |

07 Jun 04 - 09:45 AM (#1201943) Subject: RE: BS: The case of the missing sturgeon From: Charley Noble This ditty has been rattling around pubs and private song parties for at least a century. But it's nice to see more verses. I added a parallel verse to "When Jones Ale Was New" a while back which runs like this: The next to come in was a virgin surgeon, And she didn?t need any urging, No, she didn?t need any urging For to join with the jovial crew And after she downed several whiskey ryes, She took out her scalpel and held it high, Saying "Who with me this night will lie?" When Jones' Ale was new, me boys! When Jones' Ale was new! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
