06 Jun 04 - 05:58 PM (#1201483) Subject: Lyr Add: UNDERSTAND YOUR MAN (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon UNDERSTAND YOUR MAN Words and music by Johnny Cash. As recorded by Johnny Cash on "I Walk the Line" (1964) Don't call my name out your window when I'm leavin'. I won't even turn my head. Don't send your kinfolks to gi' me no talkin'. I'll be gone like I said. You'd say the same ol' thing that you been sayin' all along. Lay there in your bed 'n' keep your mouth shut till I'm gone. Don't give me that old familiar cryin', cussin' moan. Understand your man. (I'm tired o' your bad-mouthin'.) Understand your man. You can give my other suit to the Salvation Army, And everything else I leave behind. I ain't takin' nothin' that'll slow down my trav'lin' While I'm untanglin' my mind. I ain't gonna rèpeat what I said anymore While I'm breathin' air that ain't been breathed before. I'll be as gone as a wild goose in winter, Then you'll understand your man. (Meditate on it.) Understand your man. (You hear me talkin', now?) Understand your man. (Remember what I told you.) Understand your man. |

15 Nov 08 - 11:45 PM (#2494910) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Understand Your Man (Johnny Cash) From: GUEST,maple_leaf_boy This is what it says on that page: Listed as No. 4 in "The Ten Worst Dylanesque Songwriting Ripoffs," in Jimmy Guterman & Owen O'Donnell, The Worst Rock n' Roll Records of All Time, New York, 1991, p. 97. These fellows Jimmy Guterman and Owen O'Donnell obviously don't know what they're talking about. Johnny wrote thus tune based around the Dylan song "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright. You can hear the similarities in the melody, but there are distinct difference. The lyrics have a different perspective than the Dylan song, which inspired it. He of course asked Dylan permission if the song was going to sound similar. He wouldn't rip off his friend. As for the Worst Rock and Roll Records Of All Time: This is an amazing song. The lyrics, the horns, and the slide guitar in it. I just love it. I'm glad that other people play this song, also. |

In other words, leaving the chore and the mess for her to take care of. What a man! |
