Can anyone help please? |

He is alive and well just turne d65 and lives in Eccles, which despite what the Mandarins in Whitehall may say remains firmly part of God's county know to one and all as LANCASHIRE ! Joan may well be Joan Blackburn who runs Wigan Folk Club, they have a rather good website |

The song was recorded by Joan on the first "Lancashire Voices" cassette organised by Derek Gifford and Chris Harvey of Cock Robin Music in Croston, Lancashire as part of an ongoing project to record people who wouldn't normally make a CD or tape. These recordings are archived - I think - in Central Lancashire library athough Derek or Chris can tell you better what they do with them. Joan won the inaugural Fred Jordan memorial traditional singers' trophy last year at Saltburn (?). She's always telling us tales of her days gone by and you can never get a word in. She's a diamond! Ted should therefore be getting anything that's due to him via the proper channels. If it's played on the radio then the tracks are logged and sent to the relevent authority for royalty payment. I'm not involved with BBC GMR in Manchester although I have been on Ali O'Brien's programme "Sounds of Folk" a couple of times since it started over a year ago now and Bernard Cromarty who does help Ali in the studio sends me photos that I put on the folknorthwest website. There's a picture of Joan on there somewhere. I've also been on BBC Radio Merseyside's "Folkscene" with Stan Ambrose a few times in the past and also BBC Radio Lancashire's "Lancashire Drift" has played some tracks off my CDs. Chris Harvey and myself have recently - well January this year ; time flies! been on with the CD "A Mon Like Harry" which we did as a tribute to the songs of Harry Boardman. Cheers Mark |

"The Lancashire Voices" project run by Derek and Chris only issues a limited number of tapes/CDs - 100 or so - mainly for the artist/s to sell to their friends . The people taking part tend not to be people who go round doing gigs so there is no real volume of sales expected. The second tape was of "Sid" Calderbank who sings "Traditional" Lancashire songs - similar to the material performed by Harry Boardman in his prime and the third CD featured a number of poets who wrote their own stuff in Lancashire dialect including Les Bond, Monologue Joe, Sheila Mellor-Barns and John Dowding (my dad). The next instalment in the series is going to be several singers performing Lancashire songs that Derek and Chris have dug out of library collections of broadsides that have never been recorded before. The link to Wireless Waves above is the site that I run for the North West Federation of Folk Clubs. Bernard Cromarty (mudcatter Bernard) helps Ali O'Brien on the "Sounds of Folk" show on BBC GMR and takes pictures of the guests and I put them on the site.
