could you give some hints to the words

like could it be the soung that goes "it was della and the

dealer and a dog named jake and cat named callamazoe"

or is that a different soung.

The song Bob is referring to is called Della and the Dealer" and was written and recorded by Hoyt Axton after his "folk song" days were over and he went country. It's on his first country album(I forgot the name) with another hit of his called "Bony Fingers". I was a real fan of his in the 60's. Remember "The Pusher" ??

Mistake and/or misread !! I meant the song belter is referring to. I do not know any other song titled the dealer by Mr. Ruzicka. Sorry if I misled you. Les

Another song schwartz might be refering to is a song that I have one a tape that contains both Joan Beaz and Judy Collins do to my coping every abulm in sight on to as few tapes as I could. I thought this song was Baez singing though, & I think it was a Bob Dylon song. It was the story of a spagety western about a guy called the jack of hearts robing a bank in some hole in the wall town populated by collorfull characters including a hanging judge, his wife, his mistress, & card players who don't pay any atention to the day lite robbery. Does that sound famillar?

THE DEALER
(Bob Ruzicka)

Jack of diamonds, queen of spades
Fingers tremble and the memory fades
And it's a foolish man who tries to bluff the dealer

Jokers laughed and lady luck smiled
The aces were high and the deuces were wild
When you're down and losin', everyone's a cheater

CHORUS [FIRST VERSION]:You can't win and you can't break even
You can't get out of the game
You shouldn't stay but you ain't leavin'
'Cos your luck may change again

Just when things were going fine
Someone jumped you from behind
When you're down and losin', everyone's a cheater

CHORUS [2D VERSION]: You can't win and you can't break even
You can't get out of the game
You tried your luck but
Twenty-one beats nineteen every time

REPEAT FIRST TWO STANZAS

This is strictly from memory of Judy Collins' version but it does vary slightly from Wendy's posting.

THE DEALER
Composer: Bob Ruzicka

1/ Jack of diamonds, queen of spades,
Fingers tremble and the memory fades,
And it's a foolish man who tries to bluff the dealer.

2/ Jokers laughed and Lady Luck smiled.
The aces were high and the deuces were wild.
When you're down and losin', everyone's a cheater.

CHORUS [1ST VERSION]: You can't win and you can't break even.
You can't get out of the game.
You shouldn't stay but you ain't leavin'
'Cos your luck may change again.

3/ Life's a lot like that, my friend.
Luck runs out and the winning streak ends
When the deck is stacked you can't trust the dealer.
Just when things were going fine,
Someone jumped you from behind.
When you're down and losin', everyone's a cheater.

CHORUS [2D VERSION]: You got a little more than you bargained for,
A little more than you had in mind.
You took your chance but
Twenty-one beats nineteen every time.

Playing hint: For the intro, no high E-string and on the 'turnaround point'
of the chords, add a D-note on B-string.

This is the way I play it, close to Judy Collins version.
FM7add7 is like F(ma)j7 but with a D-note added on B-string.

Does anyone have a recording link for Bob Ruzicka's song Big River (McKenzie)? I can see the words and the tune, in the 70s songbook Singin' About Us.
