One of soft lights, cool, smooth drinks, and no televisions or radios, so it is completely devoid of any outside news. It is a place to come away from your cares and concerns. To tune up and tune in with friends in a mellow blend of voices and instruments. The only rules are no political/war debates and no brawling. Back in ought three that's the way the whole thing started...now, we're putting some dusty roses in the vases, polishing up the mirrors and old, smooth-worn bar to offer another side of Mudcat...the one we've all been to before; the one that seems to get lost in the detritus of a ravaged world. Kinda like forgettin' to go to watch the sunset over the ocean or sit by a quiet running brook in the glade of a forest, or well, you know, darlin'...mellow-yellow, smoooooooth mooves, tender mercies strumming in a slow and haunting melody, THAT part of Mudcat! Nothing from the 3D world coming in 'cept fellow travellers ready for some Peace, Love, and Rest, yeah?! So here's to a smooth and tasty amaretto sour, a fresh, cool breeze, and the faint strains of soft, tender guitar strummin' fading up...aaaahhhh....won't you join me? (Same rules apply!) |

You are the Host of all Hosts. To escape from the World of whatever and whatever (won't even say those the banned subjects words...sick of it all, need to get away from the repeating, drone) Ah yes. The Sun is coming in through the open window accompanied by a gentle Breeze. maybe it's time to get the Mandolin out and join the Guitar player. Have to move the sleeping cat though from the Sofa..just a bit over there ma dear as I like you to sit beside me still. There now...sigh...Bliss! This is one of my favorite places on the Mudcat. A respite indeed. The long months of friction melt away under the Roof of the Tavern. Ill sit a while in the hope that some Old Friends who haven't been around and who I miss so, pop in to say hello and maybe share some Music, laughter and Smoothies (Allan is the Smoothie King in my Book). The Clematis has grown so high and the it's Flowers are peeking in through the Back window. The Annuals in the Window Boxes are attracting the Humming Bird. Oh I needed this. ..... I know this tune. As a Biker myself they must have got my message that the Tavern was open again..such a neat ride out to here. The Cliffs on one side and nothing but Fields on the other. Shame you can't stay for a while PC. The Tavern is never a place where the outside world can spoil...only enhance. The Stones coming in!!! I realize there wasn't any mention of it at the Tonys this year (although I heard a rumor that Hugh Jackman was entertaining the crowd during commercial breaks by singing songs from it) but the hamsters are happy all the same. While they work the kinks out, I'm gonna take myself a sit-down over here in the bench by the bay window. I can peek through the clematis at the bikers this way! I don't think I have the strength to hold up my end of the bargain at the kissing booth this go-round, so when I get rested, I'll get a marker and change the sign to a "You Show Me Yours, I'll Show You Mine" surgery scar viewing booth. Vasectomies pay double, lobotomies ride for free. We can at least raise a few bucks to put on Bert's tab, eh? |

Plant swap out that side door on the patio -- the one with the vine-covered wooden thingie -- lessee, I've got artemisia, hostas, rooted cuttings from a pink rambler rose, LOTSA blackberry suckers if you wanna start a patch, here's a peony sucker (red), a couple lilac suckers ... who else has garden stuff to swap? |

After an horrendous week of calling the animal hospital (when I wasn't in the human one myself), and making the decision to let the Amber cat go - quality of life and all that..... I'd broken the news to Limpit and we'd already picked out a replacement kitten.... Amber cat decided that she wasn't ready to go. She's back home, putting on weight, sleeping, eating, sleeping, washing, napping and doing all those things she used to do, with a new sparkle in her eye. Finally after 4 months and about £500 in vet bills, we've cracked this infection thing. No relapse after a week and she's looking more like her old self. Respite indeed. And last night, I was out shopping at a craft store when I bumped into a very dear friend who was at a loose end and we ended up having dinner and going for a very long walk around some lakes. It was a glorious evening, still, fresh and bright. We walked for a couple of miles (something I couldn't do 2 weeks ago!) along overgrown paths, never farther than 8ft from a lake or canal. We saw many heron, geese and goslings, swans and cygnets, 2 pairs of crested grebe, a jay, a pair of terns, bright blue dragonflies, reed warblers, robin, blue and coal tits, and a long tailed tit. But best of all was a flash of electric blue streaking across the lake, that was gone in a split second - only the second time I've ever seen a kingfisher - and all this within 20 mins driving of London! All it needed was a cool pint of beer in a pub garden to complete the evening. Unfortunately, I had to get home so I've come in here for the cool beer. I am soooo chilled out and relaxed that even the London Underground failing didn't annoy me. Having my Amber cat at home and happy, and that little flash of blue kingfisher is better than any antidepressant I've taken. Slide that cool beer down the counter and I'll prop my feet up on this unconscious GUEST.... All I want is a pussycat in my lap and some good listnin' and sippin' music..... Play on, McDuff! LTS |

As he watches from the wndow, a small velociraptor slowly climbs out of the garbage skip, shakes itself and pauses for a moment to absorb the full rays of the sunlight. It looks around with darting eyes and takes in a vision of wide open spaces. The velociraptor gathers it's vitalty, the muscles on its shoulders bunch together as it prepares to venture forth into the wide blue yonder... It points it's snout in the direction laid out by the dark grey highway... It takes a step forward onto the dark tarmac. It leaps into the middle of the road and... SPLAT -the wheels of one hundred and fifty motorcycles flatten the unsuspecting dinosaur... (get your motor running...head out on the highway..etc...) Meanwhile back inside the tavern... Hey - MMario... Are those Auroch Burgers done yet? I've finished my bucket of Belgian beeerrr and need something to mop it up with! I could handle a small velociraptor as long as it stays on the plate. I'm not into "fast food" - you understand! I like mine "well done". I've been dazedly bouncing (slowly) off walls (mostly garden walls), chomping on clonazapam (so Curmudgeon won't say "Did you take your pill?!?") and swilling Tirconnell. Let me just curl up here in the wingchair by the fire with a couple cats in my lap and one on my, uh, "shelf". (Oh, and here comes another over the back of the chair to wrap himself around my neck -- famous trained cat scarf.) Sigh. That feels good. What am I sipping? Someone once said you're never too old for cookies and milk even if it does turn into gin and tonic (or Lagavulan and lokoumi). I'm taaaaahred. Just nudge me if I doze off. (And please don't let me drool.) Then again, some of that lobster stew might be nice and comforting -- big chunks of tail and claw meat? Not just stuff picked from body? Ummmm . . . now THAT's comfort. How long can I hide here? And talking about gardens is nice, but mine's being a tyrant. Things are walking all over the place and I have to herd them back into their pens, I mean, beds. And the goat's beard needs to be moved a looooong way away from the hostas in the turnaround. Maybe turn them into a "hedge" along the side of the way back raised bed garden. Mostly everything needs to be moved somewhere else. But there I go, talking about work again. I'm just going to sit here and dunk heavily buttered rolls into my lobster stew and listen to the music on the other side of the room. Oh, and keep the cats' paws and tongues out of my stew . . . Already the promise to my garden to get out one basketful of weeds a day is broken. And I excused not making it to the Y to work out because I was getting all this exercise doing outside work ... the sweet rocket is about to dump a ton of seeds, so I can add them to the swap. does anybody remember how to make those little woven baskets out of an odd number of lavender and a piece of ribbon?? You tie the ribbon (narrow type) just under the flower heads, then weave the ribbon through the bent back (and hopefully willowy) stalks, and when you are done tie it on the outside -- well, I guess I remember well enough to give it a shot.. right after the dance .. abd a couple other things. if I wait long enough the lavender will be all done and I can forget it. Anybody have a pack of kids who need a fundraiser at the local farmer's market?? Girls are more willing to do this as I recall. anybody want to sit right out here and weave a little keepsake while we hum rounds together?? |

Should go nicely with velociraptor. This chair is way too comfortable, I keep drifting off on a sea of serenity, wafting over the waves towards a moonlit tropical beach. I can see dusky maidens in the distance, and they appear to be carrying gourds full of fermented coconut milk, roast suckling pig and platters piled high with some sweet native fruit. I swim gently towards where the surf starts to break on the beach I can hear ukelele music drifting over the foam. A large wooden masted ship sails across the bay, it's sails billowing in the cool evening breeze, then the shanties start... And Liz - wasn't the fourth story "Gin IV - a new hope!" or was that Star Wars? I lose track! Quack! |

Or else you've been breathing the fumes from the grill and getting too much smoke. Funny how we all seem to be centered on our gardens. Why not have Geoff the Duck do a little groundwork for us--then we can each toss out some seeds or poke in some of our extra plants and see what happens. Start a nice patio garden for the Mudcat Tavern. I know I saw some ornamental grasses out around the side next to the chimney and some attractive old redwood siding. Maybe build out from there? And put in some purple martin houses and toss a couple of BT dunks in the standing pond so we can sit out there without being devoured by mosquitoes. Maybe someone will take Bert's card over to the local hardware store to pick up one of those interesting open-on-four-sides awning things to put out in the middle? |

White wood is going to show all the fingerprints and jello-splatters for sure. For your B-R-A-S, you have to do like my Nana taught us. You crumble a little of MAG's lavender into ice cube trays, fill the trays with water and freeze. They make great 'tracing' cubes and aren't nearly as messy to get out of your bra as berries. (This is also from the woman who told me "put a dot of vanilla behind each ear and you'll smell like a cookie all day". *g*) |

The only way I've ever known to make amaretto sours is just to pour your pleasure over some "rocks", then add a bit of sour mix...it's really to taste, and then sip. I don't think the sour would go well with vanilla ice cream, but the amaretto might, esp. with some apricots! I was actually up around then today; it seems the only time I can spend tidying my Bless-this-mess house and getting in my quota of one-bushel-a-day of weeds and prunings. It's quiet, except for the birds.It's cool and nice. the auto sprinklers have run, and the garden glistens. The birds seem to think it's a bird shower or water park. I deliberatly have my bedroom on the east side so I can't oversleep (doesn't work in winter). My front yard is all wildflowers; grass is boring. and sneezy. My friend Nancy can't get over what she calls my all-pink house. (No Nancy; the carpet is ash rose; the paint job is mauve ...) I was inspired by a little picture book called *The Big Orange Splotch* by Daniel Pinkwater. If I'm gonna be chained to the place then by golly, by gum, I'm gonna have fun doing what I want with it. One of my favorite SF writers once said, "It's foolish to give up what you loved as a child." Well, playing in the dirt and mud is right up there. Has anybody else read a psychological thriller titles *Sophie?* Book discussion group, right over here... in this nook with trailing datura plants ... yes, they say if you inhale deeply enough, ... I always like having more before I have had any - The time distortion effects can get confusing though - yes - recent advances in N-dimensional geometry is why every door and window of the Tavern opens onto a different location - and sometimes multiple locations! It also explains why I can store so much food in the countertop bar 'fridge that is only 18 inches cubed in external dimension. (hell fitting a moa drumstick through the door though) there's a estivating dormouse behind the counter - will that do instead of a hairy nosed wombat? |

Hey, I have this little mist attachment in the back of the pickup--it goes on the hose end and puts out a very fine mist that feels marvelous on these hot days. It stands up like a lime-green cobra. :) MAG, you may set up this little device near you on the patio--guaranteed to cool you quickly! Meanwhile, I'm going to slip on my swimming suit (since I don't have absolute privacy in my back yard) and set up the hose-end shower that I picked up for the kids. It feels SO GOOD to have that soft water pouring out over your head--and I'll set this up over near the squash and Swiss chard that need a little extra water right now. Perfect! I'll water people and produce! Set up a glass of that lemonade for when I get back, please. (Any of you may use the yard shower after dark and go with or without a suit--but only if you can stand the mosquitoes). |
