From: GUEST,merrywoman@hotmail.com Can anyone steer me to some places where I can hear traditional and/or folk music in Scotland toward the end of this month and in early July? I'm making my first trip to Scotland shortly. I'll be in Edinburgh June 24 and 25, then about 45 minutes north of Glasglow for a week, then back to Edinburgh July 3 - 6. From: GUEST,noddy When in Edinburgh pick up the free "Whats On" leaflet at tourist information .It gives info on every kind of music in town. Too much to say here. Alba Folk is a good site. Follow through for clubs in Fife, Glennfarg is good, Dunkeld the TAybank Web site Once owned by Dougie Maclean but sold on to very friendly and like minded new owners. Has a good club on a froday night upstairs or session almost very night in bar. Stirling Folk Club, The Wee Folk Club in Edinburgh itself . Watch out for a band called Tarneybackle, excellent trio based inPerth but may be on tour check their site. |

From: GUEST,Bex McK In Edinburgh: Sandy Bell's Bar on Forrest Road-- for Irish/Scottish instrumental stuff most nights of the week. The Royal Oak on Infirmary Street for singing-- mostly folk-- every night of the week. It looks like a dive (no, I take that back, it IS a dive), but there is occasionally an absolutely magical session in there. Don't be put off by appearances. In most pubs in Edinburgh, you can pick up a copy of The Gig Guide, which will list pretty much all of the live music in town for the month. |

I've had several folks recommend Sandy Bell's and The Royal Oak. I enjoy instrumental stuff, but what I REALLY love is singing (listening, not doing!). It's part of SAINTS, just down from Glasgow Cross Saint Andrews In The Square Proceedings kick off after 8pm. If you want to sing, come and sit in or near the circle, we have a few regulars that lurk at the back, but if we don't know you like to sing, then we won't pester visitors. |

By the way, right now I'm working off a fairly small map of Scotland (I'll have a better once I arrive). If you can give any indication of where some of these places (like Auldhouse near East Kilbride) are, it would be most helpful. I have been warned about the midges, Ake, but I don't intend to let them slow me down. I'll try to keep my knees covered (at least with some sort of bug-repellent). The manager told me that the rest of the hotels in the village are the same. They are so busy in summer I guess they don't feel the need to put on any musical attractions. Will you have the use of a car while in Edinburgh, btw ? |

From: akenaton Mary....The Cobbler Hotel used to have country dance music for the "towrists",but its sort of fallen out of fashion. Traditional folk music has never been common on the West Coast. In my youth the big thing was Scottish Country Dances. There were plenty of great bands about, and every village had a dance at least once a week. I still remember the feeling of excitement,walking to the hall,the nearer you got,the louder the music and cries of the dancers became. After a few drams everybody had a great time. The dances usually went on from 8:00pm till 2 or 3 in the morning. The scenery round Arrochar is spectacular, they call the mountains "the Arrochar Alps".Try to get down by Cowal and see Loch Eck ,another beatiful spot,and most importantly enjoy your stay. I hope you get to love the place half as much as I do ....Ake |

Make sure you have insect repellent with a high DEET content or get eaten alive. There is another thing they dont like but I will have to ask my wife. I think the product you're referring to is Avon's Skin So Soft. It works here pretty well on mosquitos, and I read in a guide book that it seems effective against midges, too.
