Subject: Lyr Add: The Ram Song
From: GUEST,Libby McKnight

I had fun this week learning The Ram Song from Nowell Sing We Clear, A Pageant of Mid-Winter Carols, Volume 4, John Roberts, Tony Barrand, Fred Breunig, Andy Davis - to sing at our Open Sing on exaggeration.

I transcribed the song and thought I'd post it here, in case someone else wants it.

THE RAM SONG

from Nowell Sing We Clear (1988)

As I went up to Darby upon a merchant day
I spied as fine a ram sir, as ever was fed upon hay.

CHORUS:
Hie me dingle Darby, to me Darby dingle day
It was one of the finest rams, sir, that ever was fed upon hay.

This ram he had a horn, sir that reached up to the moon.
A lad went up in January and didn't come down until June.

CHORUS

This ram he had a fleece, sir that grew up to the sky
The eagles built their nests there, you could hear the little ones cry. (Cawing noises.)

CHORUS

This ram was fenced behind, sir this ram was fenced before
And every time his hoof went down it covered an acre or more.

CHORUS

This ram he had four legs, sir that stood incredible wide
A coach and six could drive right through with room on either side.

CHORUS
(Break )(Butcher repartee)

The butcher that killed this ram, sir was up to his thighs in blood
The lad that held the basin was washed away in the flood.

CHORUS

This flood became a river, flowed over Darby moor,
It turned the biggest mill wheel that was never turned before.

CHORUS:

But, all the boys of Darby had taken up for his eyes
To kick around the streets, sir cuz they was football size.

CHORUS

But, all the women of Darby took beggin' all for his ears,
To make them leather aprons, to last them the rest of their years.

CHORUS

But, all the men of Darby took beggin' up for his tail,
To ring St. George's bell, from the top of Darby gaol.

CHORUS
(Break)

It took all the boys of Darby to carry away his bones,
It took all the girls of Darby to roll away his stones.

CHORUS

Now, the man who owns this ram, sir he must be mighty rich,
The one that sings this song, sir is a lying son of a ...Aye, aye, aye

CHORUS

Now me song is over, I've got no more to say (Good!)
Just give us eggs and brandy and we'll be on our way.

CHORUS
