Thanks for arousing pleasant memories. |
12 Jun 04 - 06:08 PM (#1205979) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Waiting for the Sunrise From: greg stephens PS some people play Bflat diminished as the second chord, instead of the A7. See which sounds nicer to you. |
15 Jun 04 - 12:17 AM (#1207442) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Waiting for the Sunrise From: Joe Richman Hey, Thanks a lot! I've got a plectrum banjo chord book that should have both chords you mention. Joe |

15 Jun 04 - 03:58 AM (#1207504) Subject: Lyr Add: THE WORLD IS WAITING FOR THE SUNRISE From: Steve Parkes I'm astonished, Joe (Offer) -- you must remember the terrific version by Les Paul and Mary Ford? (Although I don't think those chords would altogether agree with Les Paul's!) Here are the lyrics: Dear one, The world is waiting for the sunrise. Every rose is covered with dew And while the world Is waiting for the sunrise And my heart is calling you. Dear one, The world is waiting for the sunrise. Every little rose bud Is covered with dew And my heart is calling you The thrush on high His sleepy mate is calling And my heart is calling you. And here's a link to more details, including a midi and a pic of the sheet music. It says Words by Eugene Lockhart Music by Ernest Seitz Original copyright in 1919, now in public domain Isn't that nice? Steve |
15 Jun 04 - 06:34 PM (#1208114) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Waiting for the Sunrise From: dick greenhaus And you should give the Les Paul/Mary Ford recording a listen. THAT's what nostalgia is for! |
15 Jun 04 - 08:23 PM (#1208183) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Waiting for the Sunrise From: The Fooles Troupe "F#7 substitute G dim" That's why I like these 'Cord Req' threads - G / Gdim is easier on the Piano Accordion than G / F#7 - that requires a jump from one end of the Stradella to the other - the first is a button in the same short row. I take it then that we could do a similar transpose to the C#dim? |
16 Jun 04 - 12:33 AM (#1208290) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Waiting for the Sunrise From: Joe Richman I dunno.. does it sound OK? Anyway, on the plectrum or 5 string banjo in G tuning, there is only a slight difference between those two chords. F#7 is a little bit easier. But I found that G dim sounds good to lead into the G chord at the start of each part of the tune. as in the lines "Dear one.... " and "The thrush..... ". Somewhere at my Mom's house I have an old acoustic 78 of this sung by a man in a semi-classical style... nothing like Mary Ford! Can't remember the artist. Greg S. (to whom our thanks are due) was playing this in a trad jazz setting. So this song has gotten around, hasn't it? Maybe a tejano version is in the offing? 1919 is all PD now. Anything pre-1923 isn't covered by "Sonny Bono" act. One more reason to play old songs. Of course Les Paul's arrangement is still covered, but my banjo playing on a five string in a stroke style is nothing like his playing, so I'm technically free of copyright entanglements. ( As if anyone has ever asked me for a dime of royalties! I'd offer them 50% of my net if they'll cover losses!) Joe |

17 Jun 04 - 12:21 AM (#1209091) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Waiting for the Sunrise From: Joe Richman I don't know... does it sound good? Then try it. I've been using F#7. The Gdim sounds good as a lead-in to the G chords at the start of each section ( e.g. "Dear one...." and "And while.....") They are pretty similar on the banjo, except for the bass string. It's F# for the F#7 and of course G for the Gdim. Thanks again to Greg Stephens for the original chords. The song is pretty old as mentioned (thanks for the date and author, Steve). I have somewhere an acoustic 78 of a man singing it in a semi-classical style (nothing like Mary Ford), which had to be from the very early 20s. (Don't remember the name.) Greg was playing it in a trad jazz setting, and I'm playing it on a 5 string banjo in the stroke style. Maybe a Tejano version next? Joe |

22 Jun 04 - 12:19 PM (#1212193) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Waiting for the Sunrise From: greg stephens I think the first line(from memory) is "The whole wide world is waiting for the sunrise" The version quoted earlier missed out the "whole" which is necessary to fit the tune. |
23 Jun 04 - 07:24 AM (#1212766) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Waiting for the Sunrise From: GUEST,Hootenanny If my memory serves me right Mary Ford sang "Dear one the world is waiting for the sunrise" When I back up a friend who by the way is a keen Les Paul man we go to a B7 after G ???? My memory is s--t, picked up my guitar when I reached home and found that my left hand has a better memory than I do, it ain't a B7 but one of those augminished/demented type ones. I'll leave it to the musicians in future. Apologies to anyone that I confused. |

24 Jun 04 - 12:01 AM (#1213335) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Waiting for the Sunrise From: Joe Richman Greg's original chords transposed down from Bb to G worked well for me. With the addition of a Gdim chord as a lead-in, it's well near perfect to my ear. But how easy a chord is to play will differ from player to player and instrument to instrument. I'm on a 5 string banjo in G tuning. Guitar players may prefer the other version. This thread has taken on quite a life of its own. The "Dear one...the world... is waiting for the SUN...Rise..." lyric is what I remember from that ancient 78 rpm record I have stashed away at my Mom's house. I haven't heard that thing in over 20 years, so my memory could be wrong, but I doubt it. I have an instrumental bluegrss version on CD by Roger Sprung & Doc Watson. Way too fast for my playing ability. Joe |
24 Jun 04 - 05:58 AM (#1213405) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Waiting for the Sunrise From: Steve Parkes Mary Ford definitely sings "Dear one" on her recording. |

THE WORLD IS WAITING FOR THE SUNRISE Words, Eugene Lockhart; music, Ernest Seitz; ©1919. Down in the lazy west rides the moon, Warm as a night in June, Stars shimm'ring soft in a bed of blue, While I am calling and calling you. Sweetly you are dreaming, As the dawn comes slowly streaming. Waken, love, in your bower. Greet our trysting hour. Dear one, The world is waiting for the sunrise. Ev'ry rose is heavy with dew. The thrush on high, his sleepy mate is calling And my heart is calling you! [Ben Heppner sings the verse and chorus on his album "My Secret Heart: Songs of the Parlour, Stage and Silver Screen." Most other singers omit the verse. Heppner's version (which can be heard on Spotify) sounds very different from any version I've ever heard—but is probably closer to what the composer intended.] |
