13 Jun 04 - 08:33 PM (#1206532) Subject: BS: Hesperis Lives! From: hesperis Or, the wreck and rise of the Hesperis. :) As many of you know, I had a real rough time for the last couple of years, facing homelessness, illness and poverty. Well, those issues still aren't completely solved, and a lot of people gave up on me, but things are slowly getting better. Some people didn't give up on me, though, and they deserve a lot of praise. Anyway, last year I applied for a program for youth entrepreneurs that had a grant attached. I didn't get in, and that meant I had to go back on welfare if I wanted to be able to afford rent and stay out of shelters for the winter. I eventually found out that welfare had a business program, so I applied for that since I'm still too sick to work outside of the home. I ended up moving every couple of months as the places I could afford in Toronto on $350-400 a month rent were absolute dives that made me really sick with allergies. Still, I got into that program, graduated the 8-week course unlike most of my classmates, and despite problems of the program and a lack of contact from the people supposed to be my mentors, got the business started and through to the second year. It had only a small profit, but due to a lucky break that I went for with all that I had, I was able to get a new computer. The new computer has much better music capabilities than the old one and I was really looking forward to using it. However, life threw me a NICE curveball for once. I fell in love with a wonderful man who's crazy about me. Unfortunately he's a student, so neither of us are exactly well-off - in fact, we don't even have enough money to get the tiniest possible wedding and move out of his parents' place yet. He's also a US citizen, which makes it even more difficult. He visited me in Canada for several months while he was supposed to be studying in Buffalo. Then he realized he didn't want to study and that he was running out of money and needed to go back to Indiana, as he had a job offer from a previous employer. So I went with him. All my stuff is still in Canada until I can legally move in with him here, or until he can find a job in Canada. I miss my computers but I'd miss him a lot more. Since I'm not allowed to work here, I had to arrange for the business to continue while I'm gone, and I'm doing a lot of unpaid hobby stuff. It'd be nicer if I could bring in some money and help hurry up the date that we stop imposing on his parents but this "vacation" is nice for now. So yeah. I'm in Indiana, engaged to be married, and quite alive. |
13 Jun 04 - 08:48 PM (#1206540) Subject: RE: BS: Hesperis Lives! From: Bobert Well, what a happy story... (sniff...) And livin' in Indiana, too? I wouldn't live there myself because of the daylight savings time thing but I've visited there once. My dog got into it wid a skunk. My 49 Ford panel truck got a dead battery there just before the front axle bearing froze up and almost melted the spindle... But, hey, lovely state and nice folks... I was way back in a sate park when the battery went dead an Indiana preacherman in the next campground drove me into town to get the battery charged and preached to me all the way in and back... Problem was that I was allready a Christian but he didn't have his hearing aid in and so he figgured he mauybe shouldn't have taken no chance on the devil gettin' me that cold morning in Indiana... Well, I got a couple cans of tomatoe juice and poured on the dog and the truck started and life was good... once again! Kinda like yer story, sniff, 'cept Indiana is the right place to be fir ya'... Hey, why can't you work? They let Hispanic folks work who ain't legally here. I think you can like go to the Motor Vehicles and get a card 'er somethin'... In these parts all you need is an afidavid that you live here and pay rent... Hey, offer your fiance's folks a few bucks rent, get a lease and see if that will work... Good luck and great news... 14 Jun 04 - 05:21 PM (#1207198) Subject: RE: BS: Hesperis Lives! From: mg So get married...if he is the right man, money should not stop you. It shouldn't take much to go to a Justice of the Peace or whatever. Then you and/or he should be able to straighten things out with all the magistrates. It will be so much easier to do it this way. Lots of married couples start with no money, living with relatives etc. Summer is a great time. Get $10 worth of white material, make a dress, pick some flowers in the field. Someone in his family can bake a cake. There, you have it. mg |

14 Jun 04 - 07:51 PM (#1207312) Subject: RE: BS: Hesperis Lives! From: hesperis Thanks everyone. *hugs* Bobert - I actually LIKE the time not changing at different times of the year. It makes it difficult for neighboring places but it's fine by me to always know what time it is and not get messed up by it changing! LH - It's nice. A lot warmer, unfortunately also a lot more chemical spraying. But his family is a lot of really nice people. We haven't gone out much yet but will be starting to do so soon. I found some really awesome local bands that we'll be checking out. Mary - We'd also have to be able to afford the visa application for me afterwards, which is a lot. But he's able to work, at least, and we're saving up for everything. As long as my business continues then I'll be better off next year and can start contributing more again. Homeless! Wow, good to see you. We're near Indy. |

15 Jun 04 - 12:08 AM (#1207436) Subject: RE: BS: Hesperis Lives! From: Little Hawk I've met Hesperis' partner, and he seems like a great guy to me. I figure they're both lucky. So it's warmer in Indiana? Sounds good to me. Seems to me I've been buying hobby stuff on Ebay from someone near Indianapolis. I'll have to check. It's a pretty big city, isn't it? Indiana is the state named after the "Indians". That is kind of interesting in itself, I think. I agree with Mary...getting married does not have to be expensive. I'm not speaking from experience when I say that...but it doesn't. - LH |
15 Jun 04 - 12:33 AM (#1207447) Subject: RE: BS: Hesperis Lives! From: Amergin Well Hes' issue is that she has to deal with emigration....they won't just let you become a resident/citizen if you marry a citizen anymore....she has to come on an actual visa first and then marry the fellow and then apply to become a permanent resident and get a work permit and such....beaurocracy |
