The same people laugh at Morris dancing and that is clearly more English. Where was Irish dancing (within Eire) before Riverdance? On the snigger scale that is. Go figure. |

If I want to watch football I will. If you don't want to watch football then don't, but going to a festival to avoid it doesn't make sense. The same goes for anything else. I don't need to do something else to avoid doing something I don't want to do. On Friday I will be running my folk club, and will not have time for the football. I would like to watch the football, but I have a responsibilty to run my club. Decision made. Everybody has the right to do whatever they want without making excuses. If we all liked the same things in life, it would get a bit boring. Everybody to their own thing. |

From: Mr Red The Shambles I make a rod for my own back, if it is not Liverpuddle or Manchester Untidy I have to deny then it is the political denial (well at least that is traditional). I say it often enough the only reason worth considering - as to my sartorial pecadillo - is that I am a poser. Though the freedom of choice so generaously proferred by by ex-wifes departure may be included in the calculation. When I ponder the PEL and the riots that ensue from the screenings in UK pubs I have to call to question the integrity of the government. They are shit scared of football crowds to the point they ignore the best advice of the police that such rowdy and too often violent pub screenings of FOOTBALL should have been licenced, folk music has to be and they were never even clutter on the police radar. It may only be a few miscreants but where are the miscreants in folk sessions? Anyway if I was to wear a political colour it would be transparent - and you wouldn't want that now would you? |

From: Hrothgar A couple of years ago, Australia were playing the Oll Blecks in Sydney on the first Saturday night of the month. Being a loyal folkie, I went to the folk club run by rich-joy and her little mate Paul the Gnome on the first Saturday night of the month. Not being entirely silly, I drove up to Maleny early so I could watch the first half in the pub. I then tore myself away from a very close match to go to the folk club - and found that Paul the Gnome wasn't even there because he had fiddled tickets to the game and was in Sydney watching it! Some more getting even that I have to do .... |

I still get mildly interested in Rugby Football, but much less so now it's gone professional and therefore commercial. No point going to festivals to avoid it - I go to festivals to dance, drink & sing (and make lemonade!) - not necessarily in that order of importance. btw, St George, apparently, is the Patron Saint not only of England, but also (according to an item I heard on the radio the other day) of Portugal and, er, Germany! Still, we enjoy Chicago Cubs on the radio and Pat Foley doing the Blackhawk games as well. (I don't really ever say "as well". Left to my own devices, I would say "too". Not even "also"---all for fear of being taken to be British ;-) But we think FOOTBALL is absolutely intolerable in both cultures!!! From: Herga Kitty I live near Wembley, so it was great when Bob Hawkes (coincidentally?) organised a series of Saturday folk events in East Hertfordshire in 1996 (while the European Championships were taking place in England), and booked me and MCP to run a singaround at the first one, in Much Hadham. We got to meet Alan Franks and Patti Vetta, and the other Andy Barnes, and heard Show of Hands, Tom McConville and Pauline Cato, Dave Burland and Gas Mark 5, among others.... Kitty |
