Dave Van Ronk Street

The City of New York will honor the DVR Street by naming a street near Sheridan Square after "the Mayor of MacDougal Street." The cermonies will be held on June 30th with plenty of music, too.

Read about it HERE

I posted this in the "He Was A Friend of Mine" thread, but later felt it deserved its own.

That is wonderful to hear. The Blues Project Album made an indelible impression on many of us who heard it in the mid sixties. Particularly Dave's tracks Bad Dream Blues and Don't you leave me here. Later on his song Green Green Rocky Road and his instrumental of St Louis tickle became essential parts of any guitarists's psyche - everybody seemed to know a phrase or riff or two - even if we couldn't piece the whole thing together.

I am so pleased that he was appreciated and honoured in his own land. He was a terrific singer and guitarist and he had a lot of fans over here in England.

This is sort of like putting Woody on a stamp--I doubt that Dave ever sought municipal approval (particularly by any bleeping government.)

Yes, I agree, Dick, that Dave likely did not give a rats ass about what government thought of him. I also doubt the City of New York, acting a "the government" has taken it upon itself to commemorate Dave. Others, however, have petitioned the city to make it so that going forward, people may stop and ask, "Just who was this Dave Van Ronk character?" and discover all the wonder that he was.

When the Pest Orifice put Woody on a stamp Arlo was heard to say that "for a man who tried so hard not to be accepted by the establishment this is a staggering defeat.", or something to that effect. I bet Dave is having a chuckle over it as we speak.

On my first trip to New York City, to Greenwich Village, and to a coffee house I first heard Dave Van Ronk. Before I left town I had one of his albums and have purchased more over the years, the latest being the Sunday Street CD. Even today he is one of my favorite singers and guitarists. From what I have read and heard, Van Ronk was also an avid supporter of others trying to make an impression in the world of folk music. I have encountered some folk in music who seemed on a personal quest for glory. From what I have heard of Van Ronk he was at the opposite end of that spectrum. However, he is certainly deserving of respect and honor and it is nice to see this type of recognition.

He has the honor (or so I have read) of having been beaten up by a cop during the Stonewall riot -- and he wasn't even gay!

Dave told me that he'd been drinking down the street at the Lion's Head. As he was on his way home to his apartment on Waverly Street(where he lived at the time)he stopped to see the festivities at the Stonewall. Capt. Fink, the precinct commander, imeediately singled him out as a ringleader(DVR stood out, even in that crowd!). Dave later proudly claimed that the headline in the Daily News the next day read "FOLKSINGER BUSTED IN FAG RIOT!"

reminds me of the scene in Modern Times where Charlie Chaplin was walking along the street and turned the corner just before a protest march came along and appeared to be leading the parade!

Visited DVR Street in the village last month.

Took a photo 'neath the inauspicious sign.

Wondered why City Planners picked THAT 1/2 block?

Always amazed at these tributes that name 100 feet of sidewalk
after a luminary.

Wonder what Dave would be singing on a sad, cold day like today.

NYC has a tradition of naming things after notable people---keeping the signs up and, yet, the streets are still called by their original names.   Take Avenue of The Americas---to New Yorkers (and perhaps to all others) it is still 6th Ave. Thankfully Donald Trump has not had a street named for him yet---heaven knows he has plastered his name all over town on other things---now if he could only plaster his hair.

Perhaps on this cold and prior to snow day he (DVR) might be singing Green Green Rocky Road so as to think of pleasanter weather.

...and a stretch of Lincoln Ave. in Chicago has been named for Steve Goodman. I'm sure Stevie would've liked that. (For what it's worth.)
