15 Jun 04 - 03:50 PM (#1207994) Subject: BS: help required From: MARINER I've just had a text message from my youngest son who has spent the last 11 months backpacking in Australia. All it said was, "In Catherine, having a great time" Do you think that it's safe for me to assume that Catherine is a town?? A perplexed Mariner. |

I would be worried :-) At 16 years of age, Catherine won gold at the Commonwealth Games as part ... she became the first Aboriginal track and field athlete to represent Australia But maybe he has his head screwed on if he is at this place http://www.travelmate.com.au/Places/Places.asp?TownName=Catherine+Hill+Bay_%5C_NSW |

15 Jun 04 - 04:42 PM (#1208039) Subject: RE: BS: help required From: Mr Red I am tempted to ask about "Catherine Wheels" but fear the US catter's may not know this as a firework that is designed to whizz round and round on a nail until all the squirting propellant has exhuasted. It is funnier without the explanantion - trust me. |

15 Jun 04 - 05:56 PM (#1208088) Subject: RE: BS: help required From: Liz the Squeak Well what else would you do in Catherine? I used to delight in telling people that the way to the village I lived in was round the Monkey's Jump and through Aunt Mary's Bottom. One is a very sharp bend in the road and the other is a small copse (clump of trees and bushes). LTS |

15 Jun 04 - 06:29 PM (#1208113) Subject: RE: BS: help required From: MARINER You know now that we are on the subject of strange place names.I came across a street name near the town of Sardinia Ohio. It is called Shitepoke Lane! My buddy and I fell around laughing yet the locals found nothing unusual about the name. Does it mean something entirely different in the U.S.? Shite and poke that is. |

15 Jun 04 - 07:26 PM (#1208151) Subject: RE: BS: help required From: freda underhill If he's in Katherine, in the Northern Territory, I hope he visits nearby Nitmiluk. The Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park, in the Northern Territory, is 29km from Katherine. It has 13 natural gorges carved through sandstone by the Katherine River. He could travel by paddling up the gorge, or fly over the gorge either by helicopter or airplane. There are over 100km of marked walking trails in the park. From numerous 1-5 kilometre half day to 66 km five day walks. The walks lead to waterfalls and lookouts over the gorge and Park. he could do a 66 kilometre adventure walk from Nitmiluk Gorge to Leilyn (Edith Falls) spanning 5 days, sleeping under the stars near amazing waterfalls each night. Or overnight he could do a 40 kilometre return walk to the Eighth Gorge & view the Jawoyn Valley ancient Aboriginal art sites. Australia is a beautiful, ancient place! freda |

15 Jun 04 - 08:01 PM (#1208169) Subject: RE: BS: help required From: Rapparee He could visit Las Putas, California. If so, I suggest you have him visit Condom, France, first. "Shitepoke" is a regional name for a marsh bird. Can't think of which one righ offhand. |

I came to a small town named "Dismal Seepage." It was so small that when you entered the town and saw the sign saying "Welcome to Dismal Seepage," the OTHER side of the sign read, "Welcome to Dismal Seepage." CHEERS, Bob |

16 Jun 04 - 05:39 AM (#1208364) Subject: RE: BS: help required From: Helen Catherine Hill Bay is on the southern outskirts of the Newcastle-Lake Macquarie region, where I live. It's a lovely little seaside town which used to focus on the coal mine there. The cottages were lived in by the miners and their families. Now it is considered prime real estate and the old folks are getting priced out of the market because the land rates have skyrocketed. Lovely little place though. Helen |
