This is another Yossie Toiv & Heshy Walfish composition from the Shteeblehoppers album. The tune is from the famous country song " Put Another Log On The Fire"

"PEEL ONE MORE POTATO FOR THE KUGEL"

Peel one more potato for the kugel
Wash my tzitzis and hang them out to dry
Dust my Shas and bake some Shabbos challahs
Clean the house and then prepare my tie, come on Yentl you can
Wash the floor then fill the tub with water
Cook the fish and bring me a cup of tea
So peel one more potato for the kugel, shnell
Then come and tell me why you're leaving me

Well don't I bless your children every Shabbos
Don't I warn you when you're gettin fat
Ain't I gonna take you with me to Israel someday
Well a man can't treat his wife much better than that, come on Yentl
don't I
Always say hello to your mother
And don't I bring you flowers once a year
You should be thankful my dear wife
For This warm and happy life
So why do you keep moanin' "Vay Iz Meer"

                      (Repeat Verse #1)

I love the ending of the first stanza. This could be a hard sell to people who don't know Yiddish or have enough familiarity with Jewish food, words, expressions, etc. However, for those that do, it's very funny.

Sol, would you be kind enough to translate some words?

Bruce, Here are the words that you probably don't undertstand. Kugel is pudding. Tzitzis are fringes which are worn on a four cornered garment by orthodox Jewish males, between their undershirt and outer shirt. They also appear on a praying shawl. Shas refers to a complete set of the Babylonian Talmud, all 24 volumes, each one weighing in excess of 5 pounds. This is found in the libraries of most orthodox Jewish homes. Shabbos is the Sabbath (Saturday). Challahs are special braided loaves of bread that are baked specially for Sabbath & holiday meals. Anything else you don't understand, just ask. SOL ZELLER

Sol,

Thank you very much. The beauty of this type of parody is that men will laugh and women will look at each other and nod. Thank you for the info. Be good.

Woe unto me would be a more accurate translation of Vay Iz Meer. It is an idiomatic expression. SOL ZELLER

Funny. But, in my experience (and from what I've read) in Jewish households the woman is the real boss, at least in secular matters.

Thanks, Sol.

Dick,

. . . and non-Jewish households--and that's as it should be! (Just in case any women come to this thread I will say the following: Women deserve to be the head of the household because they are brilliant managers and people, creative and intelligent, kind and strong.)

I like the songs you post, Rabbi.
Your word explanations are helpful and make me realise once more how many words German owes to Yiddish.
