21 Jun 04 - 10:29 PM (#1211795) Subject: RE: Big Mick to Colorado Springs From: freightdawg Well, I'll be just a little too fer to the south, down in Albuquerque. Enjoy Colorado Springs. There are some wonderful places to visit, but beware--a lot of them are tourist traps and they charge out the wahzoo to see them. If you get a chance, head on over towards Buena Vista or Salida, or maybe a little northwest as well. Watch out for rogue lightening storms, though. Just read in the paper where 19 people were hurt with a bizarre lightening strike in Colorado. Best of wishes for the bride and groom! Freightdawg |

24 Jun 04 - 04:47 PM (#1213737) Subject: RE: Big Mick to Colorado Springs From: Rapparee Here ya go: drive to Colorado Springs, then drop westward and south a notch to San Diego. Up the coast from there -- the scenery is great, but try to avoid LA (maybe swing over to Death Valley and then back). Go straight up past San Francisco (a little town, but worth a visit) to Portland. From Portland continue North to Seattle. If the Seattleites every let you go, swing over eastward and southward -- straight across Idaho to Montana, and then south to Pocatello. From here south to I-80 outside of Salt Lake City, then easterward on I-80 and you can pick up folks like Sorcha on the way. Across Nebraska and Iowa and Illinois and Indiana and hey, you're home! Simple! |

We can always use additional contestants in the resident teddy-bear competition, though! Mick -- it's wonderful to hear that you're off to celebrate this important event. Blessings on you all. Last Saturday night I was at a concert in DC of about 6 different Labor Choruses (Seattle, Brooklyn, DC and several others) and I couldn't help but think of you. Wished I'd had a phone number for you to send you a song (I even brainstormed with BillD whose number I *did* have with me, but to no avail) Peace, love, hugs and can't wait to see you at the Getaway, JudyO/momnopp |

I would dearly love to get out there, but I fear I cannot this trip. I have to have the wee Ciara in Indianapolis for a Feis on July 10. I am trying to work out enough time to get over and visit Katlaughing if it is possible. That is likely to be on the 5th if it is possible. I sure wish I could swing along the left coast to visit Rap, Nathan, Genie, swing over to see Sorcha, and all the rest. But I just can't this time out. Methinks I will have to book a western series of house concerts one of these days. El Swanno, I will call you soon. All the best, Mick |

He made it for dinner... late. (Some sort of lame excuse about his batteries running out of juice.) The sentimental ol' Mick was showing around something he found in a gift shop that reminded him of Rick Fielding. Apparently, all present were very moved by this and I'm sure some were looking for tissue. |

07 Jul 04 - 02:12 PM (#1220833) Subject: RE: Big Mick to Colorado Springs From: GUEST,Big Mick in Glenwood Springs, CO Met up with kat and Ru last night in New Castle. We were indeed late, which had nothing to do with the Palm Zire battery dying, but the inability to contact Kat because I lost the number when it went was a problem. But not for our Kat. She, along with her daughter and her remarkable Grandson whose name is Morgan, just hung out until I got there. We had a bite to eat at the Elk Creek Pub and Restaraunt, and serenaded the dinner guests for a couple of hours. It was wonderful. I think Rick enjoyed that I brought a memento of his. We had a gas with it. Love to all, Mick who is on the road. |

07 Jul 04 - 11:22 PM (#1221087) Subject: RE: Big Mick to Colorado Springs From: katlaughing We survived a Close Encounter with a Reduced-Sized Bigus Mickus (looking VERY fine!) and are the better for it! The Rick Memento reminded me of Spaw for some reason. And, for the record, Mick is driving a red car, though Herself says it is some kind of maroon.:-) Good thing she and the lass were with him, as he drove right past us, while they waved! We were going to tease them about setting up for busking while we waited. We were on a bench in a small park to the side of the town government building. My grandson has a set of toy instruments and a darling little hat, so we set up with sticks, tamborine, and the strangest looking Morris dancer I've ever seen (pix to follow), with the hat for tips, but we'd broken up and tucked away everything just as they arrived. The Elk Creek Mining Co. Bar & Grill is a small place with the bar separated from the eating part by a glass and wooden wall. There are only about ten booths and a few tables. The few families and couples who came there to eat got a real treat hearing Mick sing and play. Oh, man, he melted our hearts so many times. The man has a heart the size of Texas/Alaska/Michigan&Lakes&Canada, take yer pick, at least, and the stories and music come straight from his heart. But a lot of you already know that. What you may not know is that Herself and the Lass have beautiful voices, too, and the love they hold for one another and Mick comes through in a beautiful way when they chime in. My voice is really out of practice, but I was able to harmonise on a couple of choruses and it felt good. Made me realise how much I miss HearMe, etc. (Oh, and my grandson, Morgan, LOVES the Lass, flirted with her and all. She's is a sweetheart!) There was a young man in his twenties across from us, in a booth with what looked to be his parents. He told Mick he'd just "made his birthday." Another couple danced across the floor, while yet another held hands and saw the moon and the stars in one another's eyes while Mick sang love songs. Two little boys had great big eyes and finally were brave enough to come over and *touch* the guitar while Mick helped them strum chords. My precious grandson fell asleep in my daughter's arms to the mellifluous tones of a Mick and His Larrivee. These were all "Mudcat moments," when ya know we've done good and it all comes back to THIS PLACE. Thanks for that, Mick and family. So, they got there, finally**bg**, about 7p. Rue, Morgan, and I made it home about midnight and I really couldn't settle down to sleep until about 2a. I knew it hadn't been a dream, that it was REAL, but it sure felt like one. Thank yew, thank yew, thank yew, Mickdarlin'..for coming over the mountain. I hope you had a good time in the "waters" this morning and didn't get kicked out for *expressing* yourself, even by remote, though I am SURE Rick laughed his ass off if you did. luvyakatlaughingandhappywithachesiregrin (I'll get some pix up in the next day or two.) |

11 Jul 04 - 11:02 AM (#1223286) Subject: RE: Big Mick to Colorado Springs From: Jeri And I suppose I'll have to wait until I see Mick to understand that final cryptic comment from kat (re the 'waters'). Love the photos - thanks! Mick gets 'cool' points for the sunglasses (I really like them) but gets 'nerd' points for forgetting his normal glasses. I was also quite shocked to see he's not wearing jeans and a light blue work shirt. It's a bit scary, but I guess it's good he bought some new clothes*. What I REALLY want to know is, what kind of capo is that? It's a shame he didn't have time to meet Bert's kids. It sounds like they (and vicariously, Bert) were really looking forward to it. * Does anyone know how one nominates a person for the TV show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy"? (Just kidding - I'd love him even if he wore Hawaian shirts and saggy-butt trousers. Hi Spaw!) |

11 Jul 04 - 04:40 PM (#1223410) Subject: RE: Big Mick to Colorado Springs From: Big Mick The waters that kat is referring to are the hot springs for which Glenwood Springs is named. This was a thoroughly enjoyable time. Any time that you can get folks that appreciate your music is a success. We just sat and played and apparently folks enjoyed it. That is a good thing, eh? I am going to have to call Bert's family and apologize profusely. The time I had in Colorado Springs was limited and filled with events surrounding the wedding of my daughter. I just couldn't break away. That is disappointing as Bert's family is charming and I would have loved to see them again. I hope you will forgive me, my friend. I had the numbers with me, but it just wasn't to be. I will call them tomorrow. When we left kat, we got a room in Glenwood Springs for the night. The next morning we had a dip, did breakfast, and then headed on the next leg of the trip which involved the Rocky Mountain National Park. No matter how many times I drive through this priceless jewel, I am still struck dumb by the beauty of God's fantastic creation. I have always had a special relationship with mountains, and it needs refreshing from time to time. Usually I pack off for a few days in them on my own. But given the recent medical problems I had, as well as the aforementioned time crunch, I had to settle for a drive through them. But the elk cooperated and we had a marvellous drive. I would advise anyone who visits Colorado to drive through on US34, preferably from west to east. One nice thing that happened was that we stopped at the trading post at the Alpine Summit. It was sleeting, but from about 500 ft. above the treeline, one can look down on the peaks. We ran into my daughter and her new husband, who were on their way to do a little camping in the mountains for their honeymoon. She is her Da's daughter. I cracked up that when I was late, kat had to call my beloved friend, Jeri, to let her know that I had arrived safe and sound. These Mudcat women are not to be trifled with ...... hahahaha. They WILL track you down. I owe you one, Ms. Corlew, when I see you. ***bg*** I loved the time I spent with kat. She epitomizes the Mudcat saying of "old friends, just met". We go back a long way around these parts, and to finally get to sit and just enjoy each others company was wonderful. And to be able to sing and chat with Night Owl was a bonus. Thanks for your patience, darlin'. I completely misjudged the amount of time it would take to get to New Castle, but there you were. I love ya!! Sure hope we get to do a gathering out in that area again soon. All the best, Mick |
|
11 Jul 04 - 06:58 PM (#1223464) Subject: RE: Big Mick to Colorado Springs From: Jeri So what kinda capo? I told kat that 'late' isn't exactly atypical for you and that you'd eventually. Kat, if I didn't say 'thanks'... well, I didn't because somebody snatched the phone...never mind. Thanks for getting word to me that Mick had made it. Mick probably thanks you as well, since the likely scene involving state troopers and bloodhounds and stuff was averted. Glad you had a good time and you got home safely, Mick. May your daughter and her new husband have one of those long, loving marriages you enjoy singing about. |
