B.S.: What Has Gone Wrong With Men?

30 Jun 04 - 04:21 PM (#1217261)
Subject: B.S.: What Has Gone Wrong With Men?
From: Peter T.

According to Nicole Kidman, "men aren't beating a path to my door" -- she attributes this to having a small child and being 37. If "men aren't beating a path to her door", this suggests that the days of men are just about over -- time to throw in the towel -- we are talking Nicole Kidman here -- has the UVB got to them?

Peter T.

Could be it's Nicole. She is, after all, a movie star or something (I don't keep up with this sort of stuff) and that can put lots of people off.

OK, so what is the point of this thread if you're not 37, or a film star, or the mother of a smsll child? And why would any man wonder why a quote from Nicole Kidman meant something had gone wrong with their whole gender?

That's a really silly question, Martin. Really silly. It's just the sort of question I thought you might ask. In any case, being blessed is a beneficent state which does not really require an answer to the question "by whom?" to further illuminate it.

Oh, and Martin? Be blessed. :-)

My guess is it's the age old problem of where you look. Her success in the entertainment business has the effect, perhaps unintended, of separating her from most mere mortals. Some folks in her slice of society may be able to live otherwise fairly normal lives, but they may be not be the norm. Don't really know, since I've never had those sorts of problems to deal with. Sort of sad, really.

Girls like her are a dime a dozen. Everywhere I go I see them, streamside in hipwaders, mowing the neighbour's grass, jamming in music stores, delivering the morning newspaper, in the front row in church, serving coffee and doughnuts at Tim Horton's...oh, sorry...was I dreaming?

Thin may be in, but fat's where it's at. A girl like that around here would get a bit more red meat and doughnuts, and attention from farm boys.

A buddy has recently broken up with his wife. I'll recommend Nicole.

Peace, Mooh.

It was a drag of a movie, but it gave me some respect for Nicole as an actress. I admire women who are willing to go beyond the glamourous starlet image when they decide which roles to accept:

Nicole as Virginia Woolf

There are certain things happening that indicate something is wrong with a lot of men in today's society, Peter T., but I'm not sure Nicole Kidman's problem is one of them... :-)

She's unquestionably an attractive woman, but I feel no big impulse to "beat a path" to her door. Does this mean something is wrong with me? Naw... I used to feel urges to beat a path to Winona Ryder's door, back in the 90's, but I guess Nicole Kidman just isn't my perfect up of tea, that's all.

Now you and I can at least agree on Dejah Thoris, right? So don't get all het up over my relative unconcern about Nicole Kidman.

I can understand her concern, however. When you simply consider how many men have attempted to woo the glorious Penelope Rutledge, for example...and I believe Penelope is still in her mid-twenties...well, yes, Nicole Kidman at 37 might be starting to feel a little insecure when she compares her situation to that of Penelope Rutledge! (Rumour has it that Penelope is still gallivanting around Monaco and Spain with her Spanish lover, the man with a thousand names...I shall not attempt to repeat them all.)

Now, let's say Nicole called me up and wanted to go out. I would definitely consider it, as much out of curiosity as anything else, but I'd want to go where no one would recognize her.

Amd where would that be????

You see the problem?

It's a difficult one. If it wasn't for her public notoriety I would consider a date or two, just to see what she's really like. Given who she is, the whole thing strikes me as just too damned complicated, though.

Same deal with Winona, sadly.

God, no! That woman has a smile that is at least an inch too wide. It's unnatural. I would be horrified if they chose her to portray Dejah Thoris. But I must say I'm at a loss to say who would be good for the part. Maybe Angelina Jolie or Kiera Knightly, from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Y'know, I liked Julia Roberts a lot in her first notable film, "Mystic Pizza", but she started looking kind of odd to me as she got older...

That other actress who was in "Thelma and Louise" is a very fine looking woman...can't recall her name...but I don't think she's right for Dejah Thoris.

Saw Nicole Kidman pretty close to naked in a movie recently (Eyes Wide Shut, 1999). Bikini panties and wee little bra. Very nice. Slender, long-leggedy beastie, but nowhere near a "walking skeleton." Nice abs (among other things). Started out with ambitions of becoming a ballerina, then took up acting.

As far as her acting is concerned, she generally manages to look different in different roles, and she plays the character she's portraying, she doesn't just play Nicole Kidman playing the character she's portraying (if you can follow that). That's something I tend to associate more with British actors (able to play a broad range of characters—see Judi Dench) than with Americans (usually keeping to a narrow range; e.g. John Wayne never played anyone but John Wayne), although within recent years, American actors are getting better at this.

Nicole Kidman is a lovely and talented woman, but I'm already married to a lovely and talented woman, thank you.

I didn't rush to that judgement, Amos. I made it a long, long time ago after lengthy consideration, back around the time of "Pretty Woman", one of the creepiest films I have ever gotten queasy watching. That wasn't Julia's fault, though...it was just a really sick movie, that's all.

I think lots of men like Julia because of her extra wide mouth - they're thinking of what they might persuade her to put in it.

And back to the subject, if you think Nicole is a fine actress, you probably thought Moulin Rouge was a great piece of cinema.

GUEST - Nicole Kidman's acting ability.

I first saw her a number of years ago in a TV film called Bangcock Hilton, with Denholme Elliot. She was an unknown Australian actress and she would have run away with the film if Elliot had not been the consummate performer that he was.

At that time Nicole was an attractive young lady but without the glamour that she has picked up over the past few years. It was clear, however, from her performance that she would have a real future as an actress and she has showed this promise in the diversity of the various roles that she has taken on.

I think that the problem that she has with finding a partner does stem from her fame and glamorous image. this seems to intimidate a lot of men who might otherwise be inclined to approach her. That would leave a relatively small pool of potential partners with sufficient staus and wealth who might feel comfortable making an advance. Is she too much competition for most men?

Subject: RE: B.S.: What Has Gone Wrong With Men?

Agree about the intimidation factor, Jacqui. Quite common, I understand. I recently heard that Elaine Page has been voicing similar disappointment to Nicole's and she was convinced that her "stardom" had intimidated potential suitors.

And you know - there is a dearth of good looking women knocking on my door too. It could be that the wife standing there with a shotgun has something to do with it though.

Some of us prefer women with curves in places where models don't even have places...

And while 37 is a little young, it has always been acceptable for older men to date younger women. Perhaps she is suffering now from the fact that earlier in life, she could depend on her looks, and did not have to learn to actually contribute to building a relationship. Not that I have any firsthand knowledge of her relationships...

If she chose to walk up to my door (there is a path already) I would open up with pleasure, but I am certainly not going to cross the Atlantic on the off chance that I could talk my way past her security guards, p.a.s, and no doubt numerous other hangers on.

jacqui, I agree that she is an extremely talented actress. I saw her in Bangkok Hilton, and also in a mini series about the Vietnam war. She is an extremely talented actress.
She is also very smart, both her parents are professionals. Her mother is a feminist and brought up both daughters participating with her in her political activities. her father is a respected psychologist in Australia and has written a number of books, including one on Jung that is one of the best books on Jung I ever read.

she has a lot to offer any intelligent man.

Dunno, Dave. Here's what the Internet Movie DataBase has on Eyes Wide Shut. Weird movie. There is a scene later on in the movie where the Tom Cruise character winds up at a masked ball and sex orgy (lots of people wearing masks and little else), but the scene I was referring to occurs early in the movie when the Cruise and Kidman characters (married) are in the bedroom sitting around in their undies and confessing to each other that they've had fantasies about other people. That sets the tone of the rest of the movie, and leads the Cruise character (pissed off at his wife's confession) to get involved in some pretty sick stuff. Good acting, but definitely not my favorite movie.

Okay, so I was sittin' 'round with the P-Vine (wife) yesterday an' I mentioned this thread to her and told her what I said above about Nicole not making herself available to general population of males. Well, since I made that observation and the P-Vine being of the female gender, she had to tell me just how wrong I was... Ahhhh, normal...

So I says to the P-Vine, "Tell ya what, P-Vine, if you think she is so danged available to the general population, lets see if I can get thru to Nicole to ask her out on a date!"

Well, I I've made over 50 phone calls and prolly racked up a hefty phone bill trying to get to Nicole to ask her out and so far the closest I've gotten was to the superintendent of the refuse collection service that services her neighborhood. He called his guy in the field who says there's a locked gate in front of Nicole's house.

Okay, maybe that's not the closest I've gotten. I did get a secretary who works for her publicists who when I told I wanted to apply for the Nicoole's-new-man job siad some stuff that I can't repeat here and then hung up the phone on me....

Well, I might not have gotten a dream date with Nicole but, hey, I've won one against the P-Vine so.... life is good, if not for Nicole, at least fir this ol' hillbilly...

Although I agree with you, I have frequently had problems with some of the more famous British actors intoning their lines in a plummy, artificially-mellifluous kind of "look at me, I'm a famous thespian" tone. Specifically, I always noticed that in Olivier, and more recently in Ben Kingsley, particularly his performance in The House of Sand and Fog.

I agree that some American actors have a very narrow range, and are therefore typecast -- John Wayne always played John Wayne.

I've always thought that there were 'actors' and 'personalities' in film. Nicole falls into the first category as does Judi Dench and one of my favourite actors, Tommy Lee Jones. Personalities would include Roger Moore, who I can never remember playing anyone but himself. Both types are worth watching for their entertainment value but the acotrs would be my first choice.
