BS: Red Bull Energy Drink - Anybody tried it

I thought this was just some kind of high calorie drink (like I would need that - not!). But somebody at work was telling me that it's great - really gives you energy, and said that she lost weight by drinking it. Is it safe? Does it work? She said it made her more "mentally alert" during the day and I could do with some alertness!

not sure if you can believe what they say here
http://www.redbull.com but i havew a friend who swears
by this drink and will not drink coffee. perhaps ingredients
are listed on their page, loud music alert--there was a very loud
sound of some sort on that page--probably they drank too much stimulant.

The trick to making a fortune is to invent or mix up something that is cheap to make and completely useless, set the price by multipling the cost of manufacturing it by a factor of 1,000, then convince the world that it can't get along without it. There are eleventy-umpteen such products on the market (by actual count).

I rarely drink soft drinks, for example (unless it has a shot of rum or somethng in it). If I'm thirsty, I prefer water, or sometimes fruit juice (made from real fruit). I go along with the sage who said, "I'll drink Coca Cola when and only when I find a fresh stream of it flowing down from the mountains."

Red Bull? Yeah, bull!

used to drink it when I played badminton - not sure it did anything positive. I found that drinking cider and playing gave me a headache - something to do with the nature of the way energy is expended in short bursts. Not as bad dancing but then there is no way I will drink Red Bull at a ceilidh.

I drank this for years, until as a vegetarian, I found out it wasn't called Red Bull for nothing.

It contains Taurine which comes from cows insides. Any veggies out there take note.

01 Jul 04 - 07:27 PM (#1217946)
Subject: RE: BS: Red Bull Energy Drink - Anybody tried it
From: Gray D

So I googled and found:-

Taurine is a non-essential sulfur-containing amino acid that functions with glycine and gamma-aminobutyric acid as a neuroinhibitory transmitter. While taurine does not have a genetic codon and is not incorporated into proteins and enzymes, it does play an important role in bile acid metabolism. Taurine is incorporated into one of the most abundant bile acids, chenodeoxychloic acid where it serves to emulsify dietary lipids in the intestine, promoting digestion.

Blimey!

Not that I'd trust an author who couldn't spell "sulphur" properly, of course.

Under the protective cloak of anonymity I will truthfully confess that yes, I have drunk lots of Red Bull, especially since they've come out with a no-cal formula?

Why did I start? It sounded cool and energizing.

Results? Tastes kind of like thinned-out cough syrup, but bearable if you really want to look cool. It does quench my thirst, though. I'd say one overpriced can compares reasonably well with one 8-oz. cup of, let's say instant, caffeine coffee in humongous energy power.

And that's the truth!

I don't recommend using those types of drinks frequently. We had a kitchen remodeler drop dead on the job from a massive heart attack at our house. On the counter he was demolishing was a half empty (or half full, if you're an optimist) energy drink, and an empty bottle. True, he was overweight and ruddy complected, but I don't believe those drinks did him any good. Hand to heart, this is a true occurance. ---John

What I'm curious about is why someone would pay US$2.00 for 8 oz. of sugared caffeinated water. I think it must be a style thing. Another triumph of capitalistic marketing!

Tried it, yes. Seem to recall I didn't mind it the first time, though I didn't like it much either.

The way I tried it was in a Jäger Bomb... an ounce & a half of colder-than-ice Jägermeister in about 5 ounces of Red Bull. Had too many of them one night last summer (several people were buying rounds) and paid the price in a big messy way at sacktime.

Now I can't even stand the smell of the stuff, neither the Red Bull or the Jägermeister. Feckin' poison, both of `em.

Tried it along with a dozen other energy drinks as an energy boost whilst moutain biking. It gives you a mad 20minute burst of hyper activity, that's all. If you want a slow energy release drink stick to Lucozade sport.

There are a number of similar beverages available in the UK. None of them tastes all that delicious. The only time I find it beneficial is when occasionally driving longer distances, late in the evening. Every now and again, I have been known to become drowsy while driving.

Keeping a cup of coffee on the go, can be impractical and dangerous in a car travelling at high speed. Red Bull (and similar) does give me a lift, and keeps me alert until I can get to a point where I can safely pull over. It may be psychological, it may be that it tastes pretty foul, I don't know. But it does wake me up. I don't think it gives me any energy though - it just wakes me up. I tried caffeine tablets, and they don't work for me.

BTW, shouldn't the stuff that comes from a cow be called bovine, not taurine? Mind you, people who can't spell sulphur properly are capable of anything! :0

JWB: "Another triumph of capitalistic marketing!"

Yep. I'll wager the commercials for Red Bull aren't nearly as entertaining as they've been for other substances in the past. Someone driving a brightly painted wagon into a town and hawking their 'medicine' (AKA 'snake oil') personally was probably a lot more fun.

I've never tried it, but I've wondered what it tasted like. Over-the-counter 'male enhancement' thingies seem to be quite popular too. Red Bull is probably more likely to make you stay up all night though.

I did read that the "taurine" thing that's in it isn't actually of animal origin. It's supposed to be some kind of amino acid or something but it's synthetic.

I read somewhere that the name Red Bull comes from Taurine - Taurus the Bull in Greek Mythology and the Star constellation and the Astrology thingy. So I guess it would do nothing for me as a Virgo.

They do a lot of motor sports sponsorship - Lucazade sponsor athletes/athletic events - what are they trying to tell us?

Had some with vodka once... everyone else was falling about, me, not a twitch.

The biggest problem is that if you drink it as a mixer and get very drunk, the caffeine in it just makes sure you are wide awake to enjoy every minute of your hangover!

Oh, and it's not too good for migraine sufferers either!

Well, I drank a can of Red Bull this morning. I didn't especially like it but it wasn't horrible, either. I drank it after my usual three cups of strong coffee (I drink three to six cups of coffee every morning - three being the minimum). I did notice that I felt quite lively. However, it may be due to the fact that today was a holiday and I slept later than normal. Anyway, my curiosity is satisfied. I think it would be useful, as some have pointed out, to take along in the car to avoid drowsiness when driving and no coffee is available. It might also come in handy to keep in reserve for caffeine addicts like me who get a splitting headache if some unforseen even prevents them from getting their usual dose of morning coffee.

I think it's more a matter of building up a tolerance. Everybody in my family drank coffee, all day long. We kids were served coffee routinely from about the time we were eight or nine for breakfast and again at dinner. Of course they didn't allow it at school so we didn't have any at lunch.   Now I CANNOT manage without coffee in the morning, and I have to have it by around 11:00 am at the latest or I get a splitting headache that lasts all day. I used to drink 10 cups a day but have cut back to six maximum. And now I mostly limit my coffee consumption to mornings. However, I am still able to drink a couple of cups of expresso before bedtime and then get a good night's sleep. I guess I should wean myself off all this caffeine but I really don't have any other vices and I do love my coffee! I despise decaf and won't touch it.

RANT ON:

I run into people on a daily basis who are pumping themselves up with coffee or energy drinks or ginseng or whatever new crap is being marketed, and let me tell you, it is damn annoying! They babble like the newsreaders at 100 mph and there is more verbiage than thinking and reflecting going on.

I wish people would just chill the hell out, because it's chaotic to be run over by someone who hit the ground running. I don't care to join them in their self-inflicted crisis mode-- it's crazy-making, not functional.

And who do you think they call for peace and calm , when they hit the wall?????

CHILL!!!!

The first people to market this in the UK lived next door to me, their Gardiner had a constant supply of new T-Shirts, My kids never got one, guess what, the "inventor" , suddenly developed a heart condition which meant he had to give up marketing the stuff. I know for a fact the heart condition was genuine, the "fact" that his heart "grew" a totally new valve to replace the one which had become blocked I find a little harder to beleive!

Ingested a fair amount in Europe circa 1994 when working as a tour guide. Late nights/early mornings, innummerable silly questions to answer, etc. It kept me semi fit between stops for a coffee/tea.
As for the Taurine, I understand the source is man-made/synthesized & therefore veg-friendly.
In the bar I work in, we get orders for a "cockblock" (Red Bull & Jaegermeister) all of the time. I tell them to order a Guinness & sit down & enjoy the music & behave themselves- we don't serve that crap. I've seen people babble/shout drunken jibberish after a few rounds of vodka & red bull. It helps I guess if you need to drink & stay up late & don't wan't the hassle of cocaine.

I can't say as I've ever tried this stuff although I have seen it in many places. Personally, I like ONE cup of coffee a day just because I like it. I don't get headaches or cranky without it, I just enjoy having a cup of coffee in the morning...especially if I'm driving or doing desk work....a personal comfort if you will.

On occassion, I have been known to drink up to 3 or 4 cups of coffee but that is only when I MUST get something done and can't afford the sleep. I avoid those occassions at all costs.

Is Red Bull carbonated? From what I have read here, it sounds horrible....but then again, I don't like soda or anything else that's carbonated...including champagne.

I remember when my G.C.S.E's were on, i was having up to 7 coffee's a day (I was 15) and then when my exams finished i had no reason to be up all hours of the night so i decided (or was told rather) to quit cold turkey....owww! I had headaches for weeks, they even effected my eye-sight. Now i just have one in the morning, and MAYBE one in the afternoon.

I have been drinking Red Bull for 2 years and i thought it was wonderful... It does give you a boost but to name but a few it also rots your teeth (sugar content!) Because it is a stimulant its good but only in short bursts. I have recently suffered from migraines as a result and now i don't touch it... Its everyone's personal opnion but personally if u need energy drink water, get 8 hours sleep and take regular exercise. The short term is never an answer. RED BULL IS THE DRINK OF THE DEVIL!!!! Having been in hospital as a result, be warned

... with ingredients listed and explained. Red Bull included.

Some of the more common components of energy drinks are not only Ginseng (panax or siberian), but taurine, guarana, and ginkgo baloba (though the ginkgo is reputedly used only for the heightened awareness - which is not medically proven).

I really depend on energy drinks throughout my daily routine, so I had to find something to keep my energy level up, so one day I met this new guy at work and he introduced me to this energy drink called XS, I thought it was going to be like Red Bull, but I was way wrong. For the last 6 months I have been drinking it, it tastes great, there are 6 differnt flavors and it gives you that stable burst of energy that you are looking for. If you want to know more about it, or how to get it, please email me at GregGorsuch@cox.net. When you email me please put XS in the subject line so I don't accidently delete it.

I drank one this morning along with breakfast before going to work. Here it is the afternoon and I still feel energized.   I bought a case (24 cans) of Red Bull for $31.00 at a BJ store. It comes out to $1.30 a can. I think it is a good investment. I would drink no more than 1 to 2 cans a day. It gave me a great energy boost.

Why drink Red Bull? Cause all your friends do it? Come on... I have had Red Bull many of times, it taste gross and it gets your heart pumping so fast. It may be ideal for you, however XS actually is good for you and it gives you energy.

I had my first energy drink the other night - a can of rockstar - 30 minutes later I passed out, stopped breathing, went into full body convulstions/seizure, puked, came to and luckily walked away otherwise unharmed but extremely freaked out by the experience. Those who witnessed it called 911. I would caution against consuming these types of beverages!

I like sugary, high caffiene, unhealthy things...so you can imagine how excited i was when Red Bull appeared on the market. I like it, even the taste. A word of warning, though- do not, under any circumstances, allow children anywhere near the stuff. It turns them into raging hyperactive demons faster than you can say 'sugar rush'...
