Lyr Req: Play the Mason's Apron

This song doesn't seem to be in the Digitrad. The song is about a band on the last night of a booking at a pub. After hours, the band is having a last drink and jamming with wht pub owners when the door opens and two constables walk in

         "......mean and slow
         "Saying, 'Play the Mason's Apron,
"It's the only song we know.'"

Can some one tell me the rest of the words? And who wrote it?

I've never heard this set of lyrics. Mason's Apron is a tune, not a song...don't know what you are referring to.

The words given are the only ones I remember. Perhaps it should be 'tune' and not 'song'. I don't know.

Sorcha - From the initial description I suspect this is a song like "The Ballad of St. Anne's Reel" that makes reference to a well-known fiddle tune, but is not the tune itself. "The Ballad of St. Anne's Reel" uses the melody of the fiddle tune as instrumental breaks between verses - but the verses are sung to a different melody.

That said, I wonder if this song about "Mason's Apron" uses the fiddle tune melody in any way??

Sorry, I don't know the words to it, look forward to seeing them.

I have no idea if this will be any help...but
Celtic Connection Raise the Roof Folk/Roots 1997 16024 The Celtic Connection
"We'll play the Mason's Apron 'til the sun comes up."

And, it looks like you can buy the CD here.

It doesn't look like it. Thanks anyway. The song I'm looking for is the story of the last night of a 2 week pub gig at a pub run by old friends. All are sitting around, drinking and playing (after legal hours) when 2 constables walk in, and make a request.

It's possibly a Davey Steele song.

It's on Battlefield band album "Leaving Friday Harbour".

The song is "One More Chorus" and I can't find the lyrics on the web, but I'm sure I have the song on my PC here at work, so I'll transcribe them and post them (if no-one else beats me to it)..

One More Chorus - Davey Steele

Joe the barman's cleared the boozer,
He's made everybody leave
Just the band left in the corner,
So Joe rolls up his sleeves
He's counting out our money,
Says: It's time to leave, I think,
We say: Never mind the money, Joe,
We'll take our wage in drink!
And give us..

One more chorus and
One more song
One more tune
And then we'll be gone
It's early in the mornin
We'll be leavin soon and so,
Give us one more song,
Then we'll go--

Soon the tunes were fairly beltin out
And songs were sung as well
But this was Joe's first day at work
He was in Barman Hell
He says: I'll get my jotters
And you'll be barred for life
But the fiddler was the landlord,
And the banjo player's his wife
So give us -

Ch:
One more chorus and
One more song
One more tune
And then we'll be gone
It's early in the mornin
We'll be leavin soon and so,
Give us one more song,
Then we'll go--

Next thing, the doors flew open
It's an ill-wind that blows
For there stood two policemen
And everybody froze
They marched up to our table
All menacing and slow
Saying Play the Mason's Apron!
That's the only tune we know!.

(instrumental break - the Mason's Apron)

The sun streamed through the window
And sparkled off the bar

We packed away our whistles, fiddles,
keyboards and guitars
Moved out to the busy street
Our headache's comin on
Then the piper says: it's openin time,
Let's all head for the Tron!
And give us-

Instrumental - The Mountain Road/Mason's Apron

typos I have spotted so far:

"counting out OUR money" not "out out"
and forgot to include the last chorus OR to label the first chorus as a chorus. (sigh)

When the barman says he'll get his "jotters" - he means he'll be sacked.
