Wanted: Tenor guitar

Has anyone out there got a reasonably priced tenor guitar they want to re-home?
My hands are getting a bit arthriticky and I think a tenor might be easier to play than my beloved old Yamaha folk guitar.

I'm not sure I haven't the foggiest what tenor guitars are worth compared to standard ones. E-bay wasn't much help they all seemed to be cheap-but-won't-ship-outside-the-US; or expensive when you consider that the buyer has to take the risk on an instrument they have no chance to play to make sure it's OK.
I can't afford to pay a huge amount but am willing to pay what an instrument is worth. I can't afford luthier prices and would struggle to pay Martin/Gibson prices.
Same sort of price as a middle of the road to inexpensive but not really cheap standard guitar I suppose.

did you mention my name?

If you want an inexpensive tenor guitar, Harmony made some, and there was a Stella model also. You might also consider a baritone uke.

Thanks for the information.
I tried a baritone uke years ago but it sounded all wrong.
I know that Barnes and Mullins sold them about 30 years ago but don't know the manufacturer concerned. I've seen Stellas for sale on e-bay but the owners are not willing to ship them to the UK, plus, I want to be able to play before I buy if at all possible.

MCFAT recently baought a stella tenor guitar off e-bay dont think he wants to sell but he's been talking to people about them and may know where there's another - I seem to remember another being mentioned at Chester festival this year. Anyway I am sure he will pick up on this thread - if not PM him

I was at a folk festival last week near Toronto and there was a local luthier selling a tenot guitar that he had made. Looked pretty nice. He wanted about $600 Canadian. If you are interested, I could track doen his name and address.

As an alternative, why not just take 2 strings off of your guitar and re-tune it in tenor tuning?

Okay, I've got a 1935 Gibson tenor that looks, sounds and plays great... Over the years I've had many tenors, including a 1955 00-17 Martin, an S.S. Stewart arch top, a Harmony Arch top, a Harmony flat top but this one is the absolute best palying tenor I've ever found, other than a 1932 Plectum Tricon National Steel that if I had had the dough to buy ($4000) I would have....

Anyway, I really wasn't even thinkin' of selling it but when I read yer post, I thought to myself, "Well, Bobert, how much does it get played?" and unfortuanately the answer is, "not too much." Yep it has definately fallen from ranks since I bought a new resonator two years ago....Throw in my '64 Martin D-18 and the poor thing really does need a new home...

Now, I'll tell you what I paid for it back around 10 years ago. $875 US. Afterall, it is a 1935 vintage guitar. I would like something in that range fir it. If you are interested either PM me or just post here and we'll see what we can do.

I'm working on convincing Hobgoblin to add them to their (UK) range. It's likely to happen but don't hold your breath.

In the meantime do a Google search for the Springer Sisters in Kent who do 2nd hand and have several in stock at various proces. Note that their web site was 'down' yesterday.

Save one for me....

NickP I found the Springers' site it's a short hop from me so I'll start there. Thanks.

If I don't have any luck there I'll try Chickenbone's when I am on my travels this summer.

Bobert. Your Gibson sounds really ace but my poor old pocket won't stretch that far. I appreciated the offer though.

Go on, buy a lottery ticket, win a few bob and get that geetar of lil old Wes Ginny Bobert. And I would also recommend flying over to pick it up, as he's got more birds and butterflies in his garden than you could imagine.

I find my Washburn parlour guitar very playable - cost about £250 somewhere on the web - slightly smaller scale length, much smaller body.

Check out the following website:

As well as the history of the instrument and photos of my tenor guitar collection, it has full details of where you can get a tenor guitar, either ready-made or built.

Cheers,
