Exactly. And I agree.

An attorney to whom I am married thinks that Ashcroft et al. are more dangerous to America than Nixon ever was.

What a progression. Too bad that it's so inexorable, in this political climate. Thx, Amos.

Rapaire, I think that Ashcroft et al. are more dangerous to America than Osama bin Laden. They're using Osama, Al Qaeda and the whole A-rab Peril idea to get power for themselves, and they'll use whoever comes after Osama, Al Qaeda and the A-rab Peril.

The scary thing about A. et al. is not that they're a conspiracy, it's that they're a consensus.

Rap I'm still puzzling over the phrase 'An attorney to whom I'm married' rather than THE attorney to whom I'm married. It makes it sound as though you're married to more than one attorney!
It leads me to thoughts of The Importance of being Ernest, "To marry one attorney is unfortunate, to marry two looks like carelessness to me"
Sorry about this is just my warped sense of humour.

Not trolling or flaming here, just puzzled. Why do Americans constantly spend vast sums of money on, and get so excited about, their presidential elections, only to then elect Presidents who are deemed to be dangerous arseholes? In recent threads we've been told that Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, Bush and Baby Bush all were/are dangerous arseholes. Why, then, were they elected? Why not elect the other guy?

Just seems odd to me - voting for a dangerous arsehole! :0)

Strollin' Johnny

They are elected because they won the election by the rules that work for us.

The complainers are sour grapes, sore losers, or just plain someone who's agenda or lifestyle differs from their own. If the sitting president doesn't do a satisfactory job, he just gets voted out.

Of course I did not vote for a dangerous asshole. It was all those other dangerous assholes who, recognizing him, voted him in!

But of course, on a more serious note, one should remember that the American people did not vote Bushy in; it was a freak of the process, first negligently, incompently, or corruptly administered (pick one) by state election officials, and then manipulated by the Supreme Court.

Why did they not re-run the Florida election? What with 'hanging chads', disenfranchised voters, and missing ballot boxes, I would have thought this was the only fair way to resolve things.

MG, instead of an elected (or even non-elected if Baby Bush is anything to go by) dangerous arsehole President, you need a Royal Family like we've got to lead you. Then, whatever their personal faults, they're just figureheads sitting in an ivory tower, who've got bugger-all power and can't do any real damage. :0)

Some complainers are people who think the sitting president doesn't do a satisfactory job, and want him voted out. Talking about it -- complaint or praise -- is part of the democratic process.

Well, Strollin' Johnny, I think there are actually more similarities than differences between the U. S. and England. The U. S. does have an equivalent to the "Royal Family," but it's highly fluid:   people such as Britney Spears, Leonard Di Caprio, Angelina Jolie (with a tiger recently tattooed on her butt), Brad Pitt, Oprah Winfrey, and even Martha Stewart, who may be on her way to the slammer. America always has a "Royal Family," but the personnel varies from year to year, sometimes month to month (in fact, those I've mentioned may have all reach their sell-by dates). To find out who they currently are, check the latest issue of People Magazine.

As far as actual political figures, it appears to me that England doesn't actually do a whole lot better than the U. S. when it comes to electing folks who are somewhat less than heroic. For example, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair.

Just a casual observation. . . .

Yes Don, you're right except for one important point - our Prime Minister is NOT the President. It's the PARTY that's elected to power, not a person. The Prime Minister is merely what his title suggests, the leader of the Cabinet of Ministers that make up the Government. It's impossible to have a Prime Minister whose party doesn't have a greater number of MPs than any other individual party in The House Of Commons, unlike the States where the President may be from the minority party. And the Prime Minister can be removed from office by the members of his own party, or by a vote of no confidence by the members of the House of Commons. The Prime Minister of Great Britain has far less power than the President of the USA, and his position is considerably less secure.

Also, why do you feel that Margaret Thatcher wasn't heroic? Personally I have little regard for the policies she and her band of crawling toady public-schoolboy ministers pushed through during their years of mis-rule, but I have the utmost admiration for her as a woman and a leader because of the courage and strength she displayed on many occasions. Her motives may have been suspect, her guts never were.
