BS: Eighth deadly sin?

Subject: BS: Eighth deadly sin?
From: Roger the Skiffler

Caught the end of a BBC radio 4 programme (with Joan Bakewell, the thinking pensioners' crumpet)on the Seven Deadly Sins. There are going to be eight episodes, apparently, and they are asking for suggestions for a new Sin for the last episode.
I nominate for the world in general and Mudcat in particular:
INTOLERENCE.

an Eighth sin? I'm still working on the first seven.

but yes, Intolerance seems a good choice.

Let's be politically correct here: it's the Seven Reprehensible Actions. Or the Seven Personality Deficits.

But I agree with Intolerance. I myself just can't STAND intolerant people.

as a review - the traditional Seven Socially disadvantaged Traits are:

Pride

Envy

Gluttony

Lust

Anger

Greed

Sloth

I'll go with intolerance as well - I think that causes more problems worldwide than any of the others.

Here is a link to a thread on The Seven Deadly Sins (as sung by the Dubliners).

"The Seven Deadly Sins" doesn't seem to be in the DT; I'll post a LyrAdd when I get round to it.

There are only five verses. I dare say I could improvise something for the other two. Beware ! In today's climate, the fourth verse (about smoking being a sin) can result in things being thrown at you. And ashtrays are painful and messy missiles.

BTW, Roger, "INTOLERENCE" is actually spelled, "INTOLERANCE".

Can I nominate pedantry as the eighth deadly sin ?

I vote for Tolerance as the 8th.

Tolerate enough shit and eventually the first seven will be OK too.

Isn't it interesting:

Pride (comes first in the list - "We're Number 1!")

Envy   (isn't at all happy that Pride is #1)

Gluttony (If it isn't going to be #1, at least it'll be the #1 consumer)

Lust   (using sex as a replacement for being #1)

Anger   (pissed off that the sex wasn't "all that")

Greed    (at least happy that there's been a hell of a lot of sinnin' going on)

Sloth   (who else would come last?)

Limitation (of Self and of Life).

(often expressing as: cynicism, pessimism, disbelief, self-hatred, ignorance, hatred of others, rejection of life, withdrawal, depression, reductionism, negativism, and similar mental-emotional habits/philosophies...all springing from the original incorrect assumption of extreme limitation.)

If there is an original sin, that's it: The belief in limitation (and separation). Directly from it spring the other 7.

The Kippers did a far better Seven Deadly Sins song - Their Sloth verse had the participant hanging from the light fitting , as I recall. But I would agree with Roger with regard to Intolerance .

Little Hawk's "Limitation (of Self and of Life)" is equivalent to the meaning of "accidie", when this list was being put together, translated, rather misleadingly, as "sloth".

I'd say intolerwqnce isn't so much a root sin, it's a poison brewed up when you mix up a bunch of the others - mainly envy, pride, and wrath.

I'll go along with intolerance for 8 but where is this going to end! Next someone will want 9 and then 10 and then 11. When is this going to STOP! I just can't stand any more sins. Crip's I have enough trouble just keeping up with the first seven. WE DON'T NEED ANY MORE ~~ I JUST WON'T STAND FOR IT!!!!

The majority of people in the UK won't have the opportunity to vote or not vote for Blair - only the people who live in his constituency have that dubious honour. If you mean 'don't vote labour', then what's the alternative? Michael 'Oil-Slick Personified' Howard's Conservatives? I think I'll just emigrate now.

I agree that 'intolerance', as bad as it is, can be thought of as a combination of several others.

My nomination... 'lack of perspective'

not sure I can express it in one word like the others, but it includes the concepts of 'narrowmindedness' 'shallowness' 'isolationism' 'ignorance' and a few other words that express a deep reluctance to see beyond one's own inculcated habits and beliefs.

(note...'ignorance', in my view implies cultivated lack of perspective, rather than 'stupidity', which is genetic and/or incurable)

Can I suggest that "disrespect" could be number eight. Life seems to revolve around our relationships or lack of, with others. We may disrespect our bodies, ourselves others in so many ways, animals, property etc etc. Be Blessed.

Actually pride is really a summer sin and didn't a Pope say it? (er one of the Alexanders I think it was)

And Pride cometh before a fall.

Interesting one, Georgiansilver. Probably more accurate as a sin than intolerance... because intolerance of certain things is necessary, whereas disrespect is hardly ever truly necessary and even when it's justifiable can come back to bite you in the ass.
