Lyr Req: We Got to Put Shoes on Willie

The Korn Kobblers recorded it in the late 40's or early 50's. I tried
the data base here, Yahoo, and Google, and found only other people
looking for the lyric too.

It took his uncles and his ants to get him in his pants
But we gotta get his shoes on now, somehow,
We gotta get his shoes on now.

That's all I can remember.

Thanks; that's the last part of the chorus, which I remembered too;
who's got the rest?

Earl Hooker recorded PUT THE SHOES ON WILLIE as a single on the Checker label, #1025, in 1962.

Bo Diddley covered PUT THE SHOES ON WILLIE on his LP "Bo Diddley and Company," Checker #2985, 1963; and it was reissued on the Bo Diddley CD "The EP Collection," See for Miles CD #321, 1991. There it is credited to "Hooker."

Hezzie is offering a Korn Kobblers CD called "A Real Earful" which contains the song, but it gives the title as WE GOT TO PUT SHOES ON WILLIE (Note, no "the".) Sagamore Records also has it. I couldn't find a date for that recording

This site says The Knaves recorded WE GOT TO PUT SHOES ON WILLIE as a 78rpm record in New Zealand.

All mixed up but more lyrics to the best of my memory - my mother sang this all the time...

We got to get the shoes on willie
we got to get em on somehow
it took his uncles and his aunts to get him into pants
and we gotta get the shoes on now somehow
we gotta get the shoes on now

what color ma?
I like black
brown is snappier in town

.....let's make a compromise, one shoe black and one shoe brown

grandpa grandpa
where is the catalogue?

I'm a bringin' it now
Now don't tear the pages with the shoes on
Ma what size'll we get?

We better try a pair of 22s on, cause a willie's a growin yet?

Now call all our friends and relations..cause willie could create a row
it took his uncles and his aunts to get him into pants and we gotta get the shoes on now somehow
we gotta get the shoes on now

(and there's a verse about)

he's sparkin' his cousin Tilly out behind the barn

He's a-courtin' his cousin Tilly, and whenever he milks the cow,
He's a-hummin' a song and a-milkin' too long and a-sqawkin' like a lovesick sow.
Last night I seen him behind the shed, sparkin' like a lightnin' rod,
And if he's gonna wed, the durn fool critter's gotta get shod.

We gotta put the shoes on Willie.
We gotta get em on somehow
From the size of his beard, and the things that I heared...
Willie is a big boy now.
He' s a courtin his cousin gillie,
And whenever he milks a cow,
He's a hummin a song, and a milkin' too long...
And a gruntin like a love sick sow.
Last night I SEEN HIM BEHIND THE SHED
Sparkin like a lightning rod.
But if he's goin to be we'd, the durn fool critter has got to be shod
So go and get our relations...cause Willie may begin a row.
Took his uncles and his ants to put him into pants, so we got to put the shoes on now,
Some how...we got to put the shoes on now

Where oh where is that mail order
Tramps had it yesterday

Tramps, tramps where is that catalog ? Bring it back here right away
Now here' the pages with the shoes on let's see what size will we get
Might try a pair of 22's on. Our willies a growin' yet,

What about color? Black's kinda nice

But brown's snappier in town

Let's make a compromise. One shoe black and the other one brown.

WorldCat.org shows that several libraries have the sheet music, described thus:

WE GOT TO PUT SHOES ON WILLIE
Words by Jack Yellen; music by Sammy Fain.
New York: Leeds Music Corp., ©1948.

Sung by Perry Como

First line: Say, Paw! Hey Paw! Come on, get a rope and a gun.

I'll be darned. I clicked on this before I remembered that I started it myself. Wonder how Tom ever stumbled across it from back then.

Adrien, what it sounded like was like some hillbillies having a lot of fun. It got quite a bit of radio play when I was much, much, much younger.

I finally found a copy on line that I think is the same as the record I remember from back when.

We gotta put shoes on Willie,
We gotta get 'em on somehow,
From the size of his beard and the things I've heared,
Willie is a big boy now.

He's a courtin' his cousin Tillie,
And whenever he milks the cow,
He's a hummin' a song and a milkin' too long,
And a gruntin' like a lovesick sow.

Last night I seen him behind the shed,
Sparkin' like a lightnin' rod,
And if he's gonter wed,
the durn fool critter's got to be shod,
So go get our relations, cuz Willie may begin a row,
It took his uncles and aunts to put him into pants,
And we gotta get the shoes on now somehow,
We gotta get the shoes on now.

Where oh where is the mail order catalog,
Grampa was lookin' at it last,
Grampa, Grampa, gimme that catalog,
Here, I'm abringin' it fast.

Now doncha tear the pages with the shoes on,
Say, Ma, what size'll we get?
Well, ya might try a pair a twenty-twos on,
Our Willie's a growin' yet.

Now how about the color?
Well, black's kinda mighty nice.
Brown is snappier in town.
No, black is better, but we'll make a compromise,
One shoe black and the other one brown.

We gotta put shoes on Willie,
We gotta get 'em on somehow.
It took his uncles and aunts to put him into pants,
And we gotta get the shoes on now, somehow,
We gotta get the shoes on now!

We gotta put shoes on Willia.
We gotta get 'em on some how.
It took his uncles and aunts
To put him in his pants,
So we gotta get 'em on somehow.

Where oh, where is the mail order catalog?
Grandpa was looking at it last.
Grandpa, Grandpa,where is the catalog?
Here! I'm a bringin' it fast.

And now what pages are the shoes on?
Hey, Ma! What size should we get?
We'd better try a pair of 22's on.
Our Willie's a-growiin' yet.

And how 'bout the color?
Black's kinda nice.
Brown is snappier in town.
No black is best. Let's make a compromise.....
One shoe black and the other one brown.

Oh, we gotta get the shoes on Willia.
We gotta get 'em on somehow.
It took his uncles and aunts
to put him in his pants
So we gotta get the shoes on now, somehow.
We gotta get 'the shoes on now!

Frog Prince has it right-above!

We used to sing this around the house all the time in the late 1940's.

Thanks for all the great info and the correct lyrics!
