Blacksmiths Arms nr York Sept 3 w/end

From: Nick

All those who came before and all who didn't are welcome to come to:

Blacksmiths Arms
Farlington
North Yorkshire
England

for the weekend of September 3 for a singaround - playing music - session - getting involved sort of thing. Nice pub in the middle of nowhere about 10 miles north of York.

For those of you who came before it will be much like the last one APART FROM if we are going to survive the whole weekend 5am is out for the first night!

We'll post a few pics of the last one to give you an idea soon.

There is limited camping but a big carpark.

More details soon - PM me if you want to know more but I'm sure we will post more here.

Suffice it to say that the last one was fun. Hopefully the next will be even better

To give a taste of what our recent gathering was like I have posted a couple of pictures to give you a flavour of things. A few people you may recognise.

As you'll see we were quite busy. Over the course of the evening there were something in the region of 30 people who performed either singly or together so there were few breaks between when we started at about 7.30 and when we finished at half past whatever. About 13 or 14 sang, the balance were instrumentalists.

About a third of those there from where I was sitting...

... and a few more of them ...

And there is still very minimal information as to where the pub is at Blacksmiths Arms, Farlington, North Yorkshire

Hope that is some use. About a dozen have confirmed that they are coming so far so we have quite a lot of room left. Hope to hear from a few others soon. Let us know if it is of interest or if you need more information.

There is plenty of space to park, room for campers to park and sleep overnight and limited space for tents (there were four last time). Let us know early if you do want to say.

The intention is to start Friday night c.8pm and go through till c.1am so that we survive the rest rather than stay up till 5am and paralyse livers.

Saturday lunch and BarBQ (if weather is half reasonable) and a more relaxed bit of playing and singing.

Saturday evening much as Friday.

There is food Friday and Saturday evenings which people who had it last time enjoyed I think (special spaghetti is my favourite). It's not mass catering so an idea of demand in advance would be helpful or the wait will be l-o-o-o-n-g. Still the beer is VERY cheap. And of the 700 pints gone through in the evening I would guess one or two were drank by the singers!

Yo dudes,
Nick recorded the FarTington session that took place on the 16th last, and yesterday at Monk's he kindly gave me a copy (not had chance to hear it yet) of it all on CD. So I will circulate it amongst you all, for a small fee!

Certainly el Mick. I can sort that for tomorrow night. I had a quick wizz through the two CD's at dinnertime, and you will all be pleased to note that out of the 44 tracks, none of them are of me playing! Nick has expunged me from the records!
It sounds like we had a bloody good night though!

02 Aug 04 - 10:49 AM (#1238914)
Subject: RE: Blacksmiths Arms nr York Sept 3 w/end
From: Nick

Wrong, Ted! You are playing solo on one. (And you contribute to a few others with varying degrees of sobriety depending on the hour...) If I remember you didn't actually play solo that much during the evening.

I did forget to turn it over every now and again (and couldn't get near it for a chunk of the evening when we got shifted out of the way) so I'm sure missed countless gems. Anyway you have your own cd from a previous visit!

It's just something to remember the evening by.

Subject: RE: Blacksmiths Arms nr York Sept 3 w/end
From: Sttaw Legend

Ted, you actually played tracks from "Les Voix de Toillet" which was received very positively at Farlington and also in the international music press. Nikolaj Uranisamus's repertoire includes masterworks such as Telemann's Suite in A minor and concerto in E minor for recorder and transverse flute. My personal favourites from your good self was Bach's Second and Fourth Brandenburg Concerto, and Vivlaid's "La Nuttes". I feel sure Nick will have captured these master pieces for ever.

It will be a rollocking weekend and no mistake GS! The layout of the pub and it's grounds are ideal for two days of song based mayhem.
You will also find that the locals up there are as quaint and weird as you south bank, marsh dwelling herberts

Subject: RE: Blacksmiths Arms nr York Sept 3 w/end
From: Nick

Make him a copy of the cd Ted if you are going to see him and he will get an idea of what it's like. By the way, on cd2 there is a lovely intro to one of Maggie's songs where people are being a little rowdy and Mick's booming voice comes in with a 'shut up you buggers' - and everyone shuts up pretty swift.

Shows what reasonable people we all are even when pissed.

Be nice to meet you if you come GS

This is what you do for the future, Ted. One way to do it anyway -

1 Open Windows Media Player and choose 'Copy from CD'.

2 Save it somewhere you can find it (probably My Documents/My Music/Unknown Artist).

3 Open the folder up, highlight everything and copy to playlist.

4 Windows Media Player Copy to CD.

hola beast,
I am free next wednesday, 18th Aug, so I was hoping to bring "The Hull Smoking club" over to FarTington on that day. Seven of us successfully travelled over to Barrow Swamp on tuesdat night in my trusty Fiat Scud, so You will see some of us next week. I will be seeing the rest of the smokers tonight, so I should have a vanfull.
ps:Nahro Zargos is definitely coming on the 3rd sept.

Couple more coming from this end on the 3rd too so our numbers are building. Great to see that Nahro is coming back - if Richard comes we should have an excellent quartet of violins (unless there are more coming). Any chance that Richard can persuade his friends from Hessle who got such a good review from the other night to come?

All seems to be building up nicely. Look forward to seeing you when we see you next.

Hello,

I will be bringing my tent for the 3rd weekend.

Nick, Oaklet tends to spend much of his time tending whelks and in Best Western Hotels in Darlington. I last saw him at Brigg Fiddle Festival. A picture of him can be found at the following page:

http://www.carasmusic.com/

Notice his short and bowed legs. This is an evolutionary adaptation, common in the whelk-farming community on the south bank of the Humber, which enables him to spend hours riding a Lincolnshire dwarf mud pony on which he traverses the treacherous mudflats of the Humber fiddling to his whelks. His devotion to the latter, may mean that only the prospect of spectacular excitment and debauchery will lure him to Farlington.

Purple was the start of the decline of Hull FC in the mid-eighties. Thankfully that era has passed and it's now pure black and white.

Hey dudes, how's it hanging man? Some of you may remember me as a square uncool flamenco player. Well now I am hip and swinging! How? My new Gibson 180 sonex custom electric AND the pentatonic scale. Man you can groove for hours just laying that scale on your axe, and if you play it really, really fast with a plectrum, people call you a "rock god"
Blues is the true path man, it's a piece of p##s, Music is for squares!!!! Must fly man, there's a happening in Pearson Park that I want to check out.

i know the 5 shapes of the pentatonic scale (yes theres 5) so i can show you them if you like, and how to get a blues backing track going so you can play over it with the scale...

Take one group of mixed age range men. Present them with the challenge of climbing the 5 highest peaks in the British isles in a limited time. Snowdon in Wales.....Carrantouhill near Killarney in S/Ireland....Sleive Donard near Belfast in N/Ireland...Ben Nevis in Scottyland...then Scafell Pike in Engyland...in 50 hours total including travelling time..little sleep..We did it in 48.5 hrs.
Next time we are going for 45 hours.
There you have it ted...the celebration unfortunately is on the 4th.

Heloo Nick=you up early then!
anyway=i'm going
note to Ted n Mick [real names =El Ted and Ossonflags]=
i don't knoew where it is, so can i follow 1 or both of you there?
Mick-waht time you setting off, and are you going straight there, and can i follow your van?
i know where mick house is, i been there a few times and drunk a few bottles of rum, 1 time i went there till about 5 in the morning, and drinked 2 bottles of mick rum, i was tired and nearly asleep, and run out of rum, but mick said "no problum, therre another botle in the cuboard"!,
but i said 2no thanks, i falling asleep alreadfy!
i think mick got loads of drinking experience and it takes loads of bears for him too get pissed, [he is old, thats why, and been drinking for years]

and we was listening to Christie Moor on micks stereo, and it was really nice.

Nick saying=do people likew to eat?
anser =Yes, I like to eat fried mushrooms, and strwaberrys, and fish fingers, and chocerlate cakes, and bacon sandwidges, and things like that.

but food should be cheap, not like whitby sandwidge bar [i went there, i got 2 tuna sandwidges and a bun, guess how much it was?
it was 5 quid!
i said to sandwidge woman="you bloddy joking arent ye?
she says 2No, that is our prices, blooddy fiddling basterds!

5 quid for 2 sandwidges and a bun!
waht a ficking rip off!

[it was really 4.80, but thats nearly 5 quid]
total bloody con, you can buy a house for that in hull !

and sweatrcorn in it, did i ask for sweat corn=no i dident!

anyeay=whitby sandwidge bar=big rip off, and big load of shit.

anyway=does any hull people wants a lift to far lington?
les, maggie eytc?

or guest richard?
ted and mick=if you van get to fill up=put them in my van if you like.

Mick seen my van, he says "is that your van, its shit, its too rusty, i'm not botherd, its good van, its bit rusty but ok, few local folkies been in my van, like lez and maggy, amd chris and genny, and people like that etc.

anyway=guees who i saw tonight?
it was grayum and Soo, i ask them if they goingf to farlington, they say dont know,. dont know nothing about it, [i went to there house, thewy live in park avenuew], he plays a banjo and guitar, and she plays a drum., and you can see them in tap amnd spile sometines, specially on a sunday.

she [Soo], does singing as well.

I dont sing, thats because my singing is shit, and there is already plemty of good singers in hull.

anyway=I sang ac song at hull folk club last month [it was a trade unuinon protreest type song],
and that manager bloke came in the singiing room and said to me "Youd better stop singing, because all the neeghbours have started complaining"
so i'm not singing no more, [my singing is a bit shit anyeway!

i looking forwards to farlinhton=my favourite bit is just lisening.
i think it will be really nice.

i made a folk club, but i don;t sing there, bexause my singing is carap, =plus also=
its better for me to give the good people a chance,
and i like to listen , not sing.

john

ps=if you want a lift=just let me knoew.

Anyone is welcome, John, no invites needed. If people need to camp then it would be handy to know as the space is a little limited for tents though huge for campers and things.

As you keep coming to Farlington, Ted, perhaps you could abandon Superted and become Far Ted?

Hello All,

Sorry for my silence. I have been galivanting, without my fiddle, which is being modified to include spoiler and alloy tuning pegs. I have also discovered that the streets of London are not paved with gold.

I am looking forwards to friday very much. I hope to meet Super Ted et al. on Chants Ave as I will be coming directly from my second home, the university. I will be there between 5:45 and 6pm. (I hope that this is ok with you Ted). For Ben's info, I indend to camp.

I have just had an epiphany (without anasthetic), during which I have discovered a method for calulating the selection coefficient in the Pantophysin gene of North Sea cod. My life is very exciting.

See you all on friday.

Richard.

It must be the lure of the 3rd World Spoon Playing Championship. Lynne is searching the cutlery drawers as we speak to see if we have a chance of tempting Les and Maggie away.

Perhaps we could have the Farlington Spoon Playing Competition and not invite anyone from the third world as a gesture and so's we don't clash? Seems a long way to come for all these third world people - I wonder who's funding it as it must be jolly expensive.

Well thanks all for coming and making it a great weekend. I have some wonderful memories.

Before I forget -

Thanks to:

Ben and Sharon for being the folk-friendly hosts from heaven (as well as being really special people for the last few years to us locals - they will be sorely missed by EVERYONE)

Everyone who came and participated and gave and shared - wonderful.

Pip for his song - we'll get it right in time.

Merry, Christine and everyone else who made Lynne the happiest person in the world singing beautiful harmonies all afternoon. Desperately need someone local to fill that gap!

Mick for being Mick. :)

Mary for singing even though there more than 6 people in the room.

The violinists (Donald and Richard) for playing beautifully and tastefully.

Carol for requesting me to sing a song (nobody's ever done THAT before) and then delicately telling me I had sang it to a different tune. And also for a very risque song...

Ted for being a top barman (I have the pictures) and NOT managing to divert Zander from his true path - somewhere between Joe Satriani and jazz (though you did try in those few short minutes!)

Maggie and Les. Especially Maggie for buying that strange star shaped thing that we gave to the jumble sale this morning.

And I could go on and on.

Nice memories.

Hangover tomorrow.

Thanks all - see you at the next somewhere.

Who knows on the next one, I'm afraid. We'd love to do one but...

Ben and Sharon are leaving the pub on the 28th September and so it will very much depend on who comes in next and what happens to the pub.

Hopefully we will keep our Wednesday meets going but we will see. If the worst comes to the worst we will no doubt find somewhere else. Whether the incoming person will be up for camping weekends we will see.

So at the moment we only know that we are doing the following things -

Wednesday 15th Sept - Usual singaround
Friday 17th Sept - Last Night's Fun appearing. No doubt packed out as they were hugely popular last time and played half way through the night!
Wednesday 22nd Sept - Last definite singaround with local duo also playing two sessions. No doubt all Ben's favourites played!

After that we will see what happens. Hopefully the new person in will be sympathetic to music and realise that it is a good contribution to the pub (atmosphere as well as financial) but that is a bit in the lap of the gods.
