A warning to all, RECORD YOUR SERIAL NUMBERS. Without them you will never get them back

Be SURE to heed Kendall's warning. I had my instruments stolen one time and the police managed to catch the culprit. I provided a list of my instruments (without serial numbers) and when I appeared in court to identify they I was asked "wouldn't it be possible for someone else to have the same group of instruments." Luckly there were a few marks that I told them about and where they were located on the instruments. Otherwise the bugger may have gotten away everything. It can be quite difficult to prove that you are the rightful owner without the serial numbers.

Seems weird to me. open mike says there is no mention on their web site and as Clinton has said, this lot would take some shifting.

Have you any more info Vixen?

From: Vixen

Well, I got the email from someone who was there, and when I sent it to my musical friends, another friend of mine who was there confirmed that it had happened...

I wasn't there, and don't have any more info than what I posted. Seems to me that you might get more info by calling the number for Grey Fox, or for the Whitestown Police, which is included in the initial post. I probably should have done that before I posted here, but I trust my sources.

If it's a fraud, I apologize profusely! I sure don't intend to waste Max's bandwidth on a hoax.

I won't be calling those numbers Vixen, I'm in the UK!

It just seemed odd to me as did the lack of idendification of the mandolins and fiddles.

In some ways, I hope this one does turn out to be a hoax - not to have a go at you who I know would not deliberately put a hoax message out, but in the hope that such a loss has not occured.

I just tried calling all three numbers. In each case I got a recording that said nothing about the theft. I will continue to call back until I can either verify or disprove the report. I will then post here.

All the best,

Mick

I've provided my insurance company with photos and descriptions including serial numbers. I have the same evidence, also backed up on photo cds. The only downside is having to update the information as instruments come and go, but it's worth the grief. I would hope that I'm not an easy target for thievery, as known as I seem to be locally. Double door locks, dog, lights, insurance, usually someone home, etc...The real risk is at a gig and and never let my gear outa sight.

If this ain't a hoax, I hope the bastards are caught.

Peace, Mooh.

This is not a hoax. Lisa Husted works for the Grey Fox Festival, but I don't think it happened there. (I was there and heard nothing about it until the note came out on the Grey Fox Yahoo Discussion board: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/greyfoxbluegrass/). Lisa's part of the "Grey Fox Family" so everyone associated with it is passing the word, but it was not a Grey Fox event per se. I've heard that three of the instruments have been recovered, which is also odd. I'll pass along more information when I hear it, but it is not a hoax, as far as I know.

In any case, record your serial numbers!

The Grey Fox web page says "Site Last Updated 6/22/04 08:50 AM ." There's a link to a discussion group, and there are messages posted about this. I didn't read it (need to cookify), but it looks like one of them is the one Vixen posted.

Thanks Mick. I apologise for questioning it but I'm afraid the info reported did seem odd to me and I've seen more hoaxes than I care to think of. Sorry Vixen.

As Mooh said, I hope they get the bastard(s).

Doubt they will turn up in the UK but that won't prevent me noting these serial numbers.

Nothing to apologize for, Jon. I thought it suspicious which is why I called. I am anxious to share more details, and will in a day or so. But the investigation seems to be at a delicate moment. Lisa Husted is a very nice person, and justifyably angry. This collection was a lifetime endeavor of her and her husband Phil.

More later,

Notice the details of the electrics but the mandolins and violins are listed as kind of an afterthought. Hard to help when they're not described. If one sees a Tele bass, alarms might go off, but they might as well forget the mandos and fiddles if there's no descriptions publicised.

Eyes peeled, Mooh.

Subject: Stolen Instruments---Database?
From: saulgoldie

As I was looking over some of the guitars offered for sale to compare to some that I want to sell, I got to wondering...

There have been many reports here of stolen instruments. Is there some place where there is some sort of database where we can look to make sure that what we are about to buy is not listed as having been stolen? Some of the prices I saw seemed like the owner might not have known exactly what they had. This could suggest that the instrument is stolen. Just wondering.

Thanks,
Saul
