BS: Sharpton's Role In Kerry Government

The Rev. Al Sharpton gave a prominent and rousing speech last night. If Kerry should win, do you feel that Sharpton will be given a Cabinet post or some other prominent role in a Kerry administration ?

It would seem that awarding Rev. Sharpton a cabinet position for a rousing speech is a bit short sighted. Cabinet positions should be filled with people of strong qualifications in their area.

I think Sharpton's specch, excellent as it may have been, was a swan song. The very different Mr. Obama represents the future of black leadership in the Democratic party.

"Cabinet positions should be filled with people of strong qualifications in their area."

Like Donald Rumsfeld or Tommy Thompson?

I agree that Mr. Obama represents the future of African American leadership in the Democratic Party. However, many of the Black people who I come in contact with on a daily basis consider Rev. Sharpton their present leader, and feel that he should be rewarded in some way by Kerry. Not that they are going to vote for Bush if that does not happen, but they would definitely feel slighted. Sharpton is no ones leader, Mr. Zeller... He's just the nauty boy who tells it like it is, to the exclusion of his future in politics... ;^)

He embarrased the democratic party last night by shooting from the hip and going it alone... Just like Bush has embarrased the informed around the US and the world.

Whether or not you are a premeditated provocateur, Mr. Zeller... you sure do post like one.

I am not trying to provoke anybody. I am just trying to get a better understanding of the political landscape so I can be a more informed voter, come November. The opinions of the folks on this forum will help to clarify the issues for me. I value those opinions very much. SOL ZELLER

In truth--I was being facetious in my one word post of "why" earlier.    The Rev. Al is much too polarizing a figure---a loose cannon if you will. Being from NY I will not forget the Tawana Brawley fiasco--and his involvement.   I will add--Pete Seeger as well.   But there are other issues---the convention provides an example. His 6 min. speech turned into 20---I did love it. That is not the point. The loose cannon comes into play here again. His financial shennigans too---he owns no clothing--his corp. does. That was his response in a law-suit regarding some liability and costs on his personal part.

I grant his charisma and his cause. Cabinet position of what--I ask facetiously. Secty of Hysteria comes to mind.

Myh own thinking and agreeing with other posters--Mr. Obama comes across like a well versed, intelligent, and profound speaker. In fact, he was able to encapsulate in some 15 min. more than Edwards in his speech---and with specifics.   My only fear is that some might thing of him as a Black man trying to sound White. I totally disagree if that be the case. An intelligent, well reasoned, well spoken individual with the charisma of a Bill Clinton and without the furor and contreversy of the dear Rev. Al.

I have to say---I did like Rev. Al. on Sat. Night Live(a while back)---he was a great James Brown roadie.

Bill. It's funny that you should mention James Brown. In fact, at one time, Sharpton used to be James Brown's hair dresser, before he became a man of the cloth and a political activist. SOL ZELLER

I can't see anything other than an Ambassador posting for him and I can't imagine that he would accept it.

Bill H,

What did Pete Seeger have to do with that case?

By the way, he was no loose-cannon during the convention. The Kerry camp knew that Sharpton was going to go well over his allotted time and what his speach was about. His speech was previewed. Sharpton played his part as the "outsider" that says what everyone wants to say, but that most can then say - "Well, you know Sharpton, it isn't our fault he went outside our themes."

Sharpton said he volunteered to answer Mr. Bush's challenge to Black Democrats. I think that's where the extra 14 minutes were spent and rightly so.

I don't see him in the Cabinet, but If elected I don't think Mr Kerry will forget him. Speaking of the Cabinet. How about Wes Clark for Rumsfeld's job?
