Come drink Budweiser with me
Under the Anheuser bush

This is a song my mother knew -- waltz time -- around 1900.
Has anyone heard of it?

If anyone ever invites me to drink Budweiser with them, I'll introduce them to real beer. Molson, Becks, Hieniken, or even Guinness or Harp. American beer to me tasts like flavored water.

As my dad always quoted, "He schlitzed in his pabst and now he's sadder, budweiser."

Well, one would think it would be: "Under the Anheuser Busch," but it is indeed "Anheuser Bush." My American corporate history doesn't extend to knowing when the Budweiser merger took place.

In any event, this is the original song, by Sterling and Von Tilzer. The English music hall hit, by Florrie Forde, ("Down at the Old Bull & Bush") is an adaptation of the American original. Swallow your national pride, O ye Brits.

Walrus, you beat me too it. The real thing from Budvar is one of the few lagers worth drinking.

Molson is merging with Coors.

A sad day for beer.

From one of my songs:

"I go in and ask the waitress for an ice-cold Schlitz/
And try not to stare at her moustache."

Well, here's a Ziegfield Follies song called Budweiser's a Friend of Mine - copyright, 1907.

Kendall, I'm surprised to read Heineken and Becks to be considered real beer. My world champions are: FULLER'S LONDON PRIDE for ale; GUINNESS for stout; PILSNER URQUELL for pils. When the only beer available is Heineken, I feel lonesome and blue. Roberto

Some years ago Doyle's, the venerable bar in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, MA, USA, came under new management, which decided to go for a more upscale clientele. It got rid of the riffraff by ceasing to serve Budweiser. N.B. This is not mere pubcrawlers' scuttlebutt. It was spread upon the minutes in an extensive interview with the new owner that was published in the Boston _Globe_ and put up among other memorabilia in the corridor outside the restrooms. I presume that Anheuser-Busch had no comment.

Last time I was there, I saw (IIRC) that Bud Lite, but not Bud proper, had appeared on the menu. Mission accomplished, I suppose.

I'm in Italy, Kendall. Not that easy to get good beer, and at reasonable prices. Guinness is widespread by now, although very often not at its best. I'm lucky we have a good pub with Guinness in the city where I live. But I'd like to get English beer as well, those wonderful cask ales. Good night by now. R

Let's not forget Annie's question. (remember, it's about song lyrics?)

Anyway, try www.levysheetmusic.mse.jhu.edu

Or if I typed that wrong, do a search for Lester S. Levy , it's a collection of old sheet music. For some reason, my computer keeps freezing up every time I go the the Levy site this evening. Just click on "search the collection", and type in the title, Under the Anheuser Bush. I'm pretty sure they have it. If you're not familiar with the Levy collection, they have tons of old sheet music available, and you can print out your own copies.

I used to have an original copy of this song, but it got destroyed the last time I moved, so I threw it away.

Darn, Steve, I'm sure I searched Levy for that. Maybe I spelled "Anheuser" wrong, or "Busch" right.
Guess I'll have another beer.

From The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music:

UNDER THE ANHEUSER BUSH
Words, Andrew B. Sterling. Music, Harry Von Tilzer. 1903

1. Talk about the shade of the sheltering palms.
Praise the bamboo tree and its wide spreading charms.
There's a little bush that grows right here in town.
You know its name. It has won such renown.
Often with my sweetheart, just after the play,
To this little place then my footsteps will stray.
If she hesitates when she looks at the sign,
Softly I whisper, "Now Sue, don't decline."

CHORUS: Come, come, come and make eyes with me,
Under the Anheuser Bush.
Come, come drink some "Budwise" with me,
Under the Anheuser Bush.
Hear the old German band...
Just let me hold your hand. Yah!
Do, do, come and have a stein or two,
Under the Anheuser Bush.

2. Rave about the place where your swells go to dine.
Picture Sue and me with our sandwich and stein.
Underneath the bush where the good fellows meet,
Life seems worth living. Our joy is complete.
If you're sad at heart, take a trip there tonight.
You'll forget your woe and your eyes will grow bright.
There you'll surely find me with my sweetheart Sue.
Come down this ev'ning I'll introduce you.
