Chord Req: Avalon by Nick Keir/McCalmans

Hello everybody,

as the subject line of this thread already suggests: I am more or less desperately looking for the chords for a song called "Avalon". As far as I know, it has only been recorded by the McCalmans ("Ancestral Manoevres", if I remember correctly).

Thanks,

T.

It may help to post the lyrics in case it jogs a few memories...

AVALON
My love has gone to Avalon, the winter here's too cold,
As vanquished kings from fields of fog did in the days of old.
And as she moves through shimmering climes and views the ancient stones.
I stand ,here on my hill, alone.

I did as much as I could do to bind my love to stay.
From Lothian to Tintagel's a long and weary way.
No warlock Celt am I to bind her fancy to my own.
I stand,here on my hill,alone.

My city stands full in my gaze,a proud and empty shell.
A ruined chapel mocks the view above barren well.
An icy breeze from Greenland's coast denies a futile sun.
I stand,here on my hill,alone.

Perhaps I'll go to Westmorland where hills are not so high,
Or make my way to Anglia where lowland pastures lie.
A darkened town's no place of rest for one who saw it shine,
I stand,here on my hill,alone.

y love has gone to Avalon, the winter here's too cold,
As vanquished kings from fields of fog did in the days of old.
And as she moves through shimmering climes and views the ancient stones.
I stand ,here on my hill, alone.

I was presuming he was in Scotland as they are a Scottish band.

No, I don't think so:

"I did as much as I could do to bind my love to stay
From Lothian to Tintagel is a long and weary way"

So he came from Scotland (Lothian) to Cornwall (Tintagel). I suppose he is standing near Tintagel in the song, but I'm not 100 % sure.

I thought that Tintagel is where his love has gone to?

Well, his love went away to Avalon, you know, the "fairy island". Avalon is probably close to Tintagel, or something. I'm not an expert, I'll will ask somebody who knows. I'll keep you informed.

C-flat,

this is what I found.

The "narrator" of the song is King Loth, ruler of Lothian. He is married to Arthur's sister Morgause, who gave him a couple of sons (one of them is Gawain). Morgause had some quarrels with Arthur, and to set things right between them, she decides to offer herself and her sons to Arthur's court (in Tintagel). She lives in Tintagel, leaving her husband Loth behind. Then, Arthur is mortally wounded in the battle of Camlan. To save him, the court decides to move him to the Otherworld island Avalon. This place is supposed to have strong healing powers, but it is only possible for certain people to enter it. Morgause knows the place, she has been to Avalon before (being Arthur's sister and all). So, she decides to accompany Arthur to Avalon. Loth rushes to Tintagel, to try to talk her out of it, because he knows that she probably won't come back if she ever goes to Avalon.

Maybe not everything I wrote here is correct, but I think it makes at least some sense.

The Isle of Avalon is where Glastonbury Tor is situated.

Nick,

thank you very much for the chords, and for writing the song in the first place. I promise I will handle it with love and care ;-)

It was great to see you again in Voorhout, I hope you will come to Holland again very soon (before it is flooded) :-)

Sadly neither Nick Keir nor Murray Macleod are still with us. I have some of Nick’s CDs so will see if I have that song. Otherwise you could try the McCalmans’ own website.
