Well, gol danged, seems everybody got somethin' and looks like Iz got a touch o' this stuff... Yup, I had be a CAT scan of my upper tummy for some pains Iz been havin' and that's what the doc says. They gonna do one next on the beater and my neck (since I do get some periodic pains in the neck (other tahn Teribus, Dougie and Bush). Now my colesterol ain't off the charts. Might of fact, other than one of them is fine... I don't eat no red meat, am thin, don't smoke cigarettes and otherwise am purdy active and in good health...

I tried a Google search but ended up with a bunch of meaninless (to me) obscure medical reports and not much else other than the basics: Yer gonna have a heart attack or stroke and be dead any day now... Jus kiddin' but I do realize that I do have a greater chance of this happenin' wid it than widout it. That don't require no input from the Wes Ginny Slide Rule...

The doc has put me on Lipitor for now and flaxseed oil and that's 'bout it...

Anyone know any thing 'bout this stuff 'er got any good places to to check out fir better info than I got right now?

Bobert

What is the most important information I should know about Lipitor?
• Do not take Lipitor without first talking to your doctor if you have liver disease.
• Alcohol and Lipitor can both damage your liver. Discuss with your doctor the amount of alcohol that you drink so that it can be determined if Lipitor is the best choice for lowering your cholesterol.
• Do not take Lipitor if you are pregnant, if you are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breast-feeding a baby.
• Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if it is accompanied by a fever or flulike symptoms or yellowing of your skin or eyes.

What is Lipitor?
• Lipitor blocks the production of cholesterol (a type of fat) in your body.
• Lipitor is used to reduce the amounts of LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides (another type of fat), and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make cholesterol) in your blood. Lipitor is also used to increase the level of HDL (good) cholesterol in your blood. These actions are important in reducing the risk of hardening of the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.
• Lipitor may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

How should I take Lipitor?
• Take Lipitor exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
• Take each dose with a full glass of water.
• Lipitor can be taken with or without food.
• Lipitor is usually taken once a day. Try to take your dose at the same time each day. Follow your doctor's instructions.
• Your doctor may want to monitor your liver function with blood tests before starting treatment with Lipitor, at twelve weeks after both the start of your treatment and any increase in dose, and periodically (every 6 months) thereafter. Depending on the results of these tests, your doctor can determine how much monitoring you will require.
• Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Lipitor. The interaction could lead to potentially dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit and grapefruit juice with your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor.
• Eat a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet. To realize beneficial effects from Lipitor, avoid fatty, high-cholesterol foods.
• Do not stop taking Lipitor without first talking to your doctor. It may be weeks or months before beneficial effects are seen from this medication.
• Store Lipitor at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What should I avoid while taking Lipitor?
• Alcohol and Lipitor can both damage your liver. Discuss with your doctor the amount of alcohol that you drink so that it can be determined if Lipitor is the best choice for lowering your cholesterol.

What other drugs will affect Lipitor?
• Do not take Lipitor without first talking to your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
      · cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral);
      · gemfibrozil (Lopid);
      · niacin (Nicolar, Nicobid, Nicotinex, others);
      · clarithromycin (Biaxin);
      · erythromycin (E-Mycin, E.E.S., Ery-Tab, Ilotycin, Eryc, PCE, Ilosone, others); or
      · fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), or ketoconazole (Nizoral).
• The medications listed above interact with Lipitor and may cause damage your muscles.
• Before taking Lipitor, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
      · other cholesterol-lowering drugs such as cholestyramine (Questran) or colestipol (Colestid); or
      · digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps).
• You may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.
• Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Lipitor. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.

I was just reading somewhere about grapefruit pectin cleaning up arteries. It says don't add grapefruit products if you take Lipitor...I would check into more natural ways if you have some leeway timewise. Don't get a swelled head about not eating red meat. Some people need it and more saturated fats than others. Read the metabolic body typing diet or some such title. Read all you can by Dr. Mary Enig, fat specialist. Read the Dr. Atkins books and don't let people scare you about what he says. Read Syndrome X by Dr. whozit. Anything by Dr. Schwarzbein and Dr. Bernstein (diabetes). A lot of this stuff is linked with too much insulin and too much white carb stuff. Get rid of all white carbs, rice, sugar, potatoes, beer,... for a while and see if it goes down naturally. You have no need nutritioanlly for the equivalent of library paste. mg

Bobert, if you were trying to get into the chat room a few hours ago, you might have had some trouble which was nothing to do with you. I was in there about 11 hours ago and had a lot of trouble getting in and posting, and staying in. The mudcat was running very slow at the time - we were all having trouble. So give it another go some time. I'll probably be in there in about another 12 or 13 hours. Just click on MudChat in the drop down menu, then click on go, then when it takes you there, click on "Enter MudChat". That should do it if it is behaving. You get a line on the bottom to type in, then press enter to post what you have written.

I'd be interested to hear more about it too, as someone I know has just been diagnosed as having high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Bobertdarlin...tried to post this last night, but there was a crash, so here ya go:

I'd highly recommend reading "A Week in the Zone," too. It seems a bit mroe balanced to me than Atkins and some of the others, but the too high insulin connection seems solid, these days.

I like the sound of the flaxseed oil. My acu had me on it for awhile.

Oh and it's Are-Throw-Skle-Rah-tick, ain't it?**BG**

I also cannot say enough good about this guided imagery tape/CD by Belleruth Naparstek: click here. VERY helpful!

Not to worry too much. Just my experiences...

I've been taking lipitor since April. Except for the two weeks in hopspital for heart surgery, I have never denied myself my daily ration of potables with the knowledge of the doctors. My blood test last week showed my liver function to be quite normal. I've learned over the past few months that warnings from the drug cartels are just basic "CYA."

If they want to do a cardiac catherter, don't worry. It's quite painless. However, demand some good drugs afterwards. The requirement to lie almost absolultely still for six hours requires that your mind go on leave.

Good luck -- Tom

My mind has been on leave for the last 30 years, Tom. I reckon another 6 hours can't hurt nuthin'...

Hey, Bobert. Ya got lots of good advice from the folks here. And what curmudgeon says about the drug companies and CYA is true. However, check with your pharmacist, They know way far lots about drugs and interactions and contra-indications. I enjoyed speaking with you; you have a great sense of humour.

NBA? Ya could coach.
