I think this may be the song you mean. It was written by Jack Owen of Celtic Brace.

MIST OVER THE MERSEY
(Jack Owen)
As recorded by Jack Owen on "My Song Canon" (2018)

CHORUS: Mist over the Mersey, in the early morning sun,
A dark night has ended, another day begun.
Oh, there's a time for loving and a time for sorrow too;
A time, my love, for leaving you.

Mist over the water, as we make our way to sea:
I recall those treasured memories, those of you and me;
And I recall the sweet freshness of the season when we met,
As time passes on we will forget. CHORUS

Mist over the water, and though I never said,
It grieved me more than I can say to find our love was dead.
Without a word, I left your side; I wonder if you knew.
I tell you now, I'll always worship you.

And though you never said so, I think you really see
That a new love will grow, love, where the old love used to be;
For life it must go on, love, like the ever-ebbing sea
That washes oh so many memories. CHORUS

Good old jack!

if you go Here (Ian Gartsides Birthday bash pages) you'll see some pictures of Jack (he's the one in glasses and the jacket) and on one of them there's Jack and me playing "Mist over the Mersey"! (I'm the one with the Variax electric sunburst) they were taken at Ian Gartside's 60.5 th Birthday bash last year. We're hoping Jack's going to be coming over at Fylde this year and we'll be able to get a bit more nostalgia.

We first met at Poulton Training College back in the late 60's early 70's and he formed a big part of the local Lancashire folk scene back then.

Mist over the Mersey was released on a single the flip side being Ellis Bell - another lovely song.

Yes. Jack and Eddie are two of nature's gentlemen.They provided superb entertainment at the White Horse in Middlewich(as part of the Folk & Boat Festival fringe) for many years.
For their last appearance there (before the pub changed hands and became just another lager, pool table and Sky Football joint) I took it upon myself to round up as many people as possible, including members of the festival committee, to head down to the 'Horse' and listen to them.
The esteemed Festival Director was not best pleased, as he wanted everyone to listen to the 'official' stuff in the marquee.
But talent will out.
Celtic Brace did a brilliant set (including, of course,'Mist Over The Mersey'and the best version of 'Rare Auld Times' I've ever heard).
I must see what can be done about getting them back to Middlewich.

This thread brings back memories. I heard this song sung by the Spinners at the Gregsons Well in Liverpool many years ago when it was described by Mick Groves as " The best song to have come out of Liverpool since Lennon & McCartney" I think that description is still appropriate

In the meantime (and excuse the cheek of the request!) any chance of the chords?!

Cheers

Jack Owen's album "My Song Canon" contains two recordings of MIST OVER THE MERSEY. One of them is called MIST OVER THE MERSEY REVISITED, but as far as I can tell, the lyrics are identical to what I think must be the original. You can hear the entire album at Spotify.
