The fallout from America and UK's ill considered action in Iraq continues.
As predicted here ,the conflict is rapidly progressing to an Iranian backed civil war situation, with American and British troops being sucked further into the morass.
The puppet govt of Iraq are ironically condeming Iran for "interference" in Iraqi affairs,(very amusing)

Blair, Bush,Howard, should resign immediately, and all their apologists on Mudcat should be forced to take a brain scan,(illogical as this might seem )

A force of Scottish Shi'ites....(I hope that the correct spelling) under the command of McTadder Alsadder, are said to be in control of Basra and Najaf.
Their uniform of trainers, kilts and turbans, is said to have frightened off a whole platoon of US marines ...Ake

Scottish Shi'ites? Then there's hope yet.

As well as Basra I believe they also control Barra.

Is Achbar Ben Nevis involved?

PS That was more a message to Akenaton ("I dont agree with facts", rather than a considered respose to this thread. I respect Akenaton's views, he probably knows as much as the next man on the Cowal peninsula.

Greg...I see youve picked up a bad dose of "irony" on your foray to the other side of Hadrians Wall.

Im really sorry I missed you and your friends, hope you had a great time and a safe journey back.

Enough of this personal stuff.

No word of Ben N.
But our own Ben Dover has been spotted, assisting the Americans in their pull out from entreched positions around a group of Iraqi prisoners...Ake

Ah. The most tragically informed political thread of the year to date.

When it comes to civil war, especially amongst Scottish Shi'ites, just remember--any error in calculation will be in the direction of most harm.

Unfortunately, civil war is very much in Iraq's future. There are too many factions and no real understanding of shared power.

Unfortunately, part B, at a time when the US should be a gleaming model of domocracy and shared powers it is failing desperatly with one party trying to consolidate power and shut out the rest of the folks...

So wherre is Iraq to look for an example to copy? Like no where since power is being consolidated all over the world...

So, yeah, Iraq is doomed to civil war... Just a matter of time...

Right, AKE, blame Bush and Blair. Yet you, yourself acknowledge that Iran is promoting the insurrection. So why not blame Iran?

Of course, the obvious answer is to whitewash Sadam, declare him an ally and return him to the Presidency of Iraq. Strong, brutal, repressive regimes tend to maintain order--see what happened when the USSR folded.

In fact, why not INVADE Iran, right, Doug? (I'm joking.) I'm sure Karl Rove and the boys are just itching to launch another glorious jihad against evil Islamic subhumans who don't like Americans for some strange reason...

Oh. It's because they are "against freedom and democracy" isn't it?

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! LOL! Gasp!

Returning Saddam to the Presidency and making him an American ally again would actually probably work great, from the USA's point of view, and would restore order most effectively.

Only trouble is...it's politically unsaleable, given the rhetoric of the past few years.

Kind of ironical, really.

My take on the situation,is that the people who pull and push Mr Bushs' strings rods and buttons, made an early assessment, that saddams regime could not survive for much longer due to the weakened state of the countys' infrastructure and the continued pressure from Fundamentalists with leanings towards an Iranian style republic.
They had decided even before 9/11 to invade Iraq and attempt to set up a Western style "democracy",which would give them access to Iraqi oil supply.
This would have been a marvellous plan,if it had worked, but as we predicted ,and events proved, they completely underestimated the power of the clerics, who are even better than the capitalists at manipulation.
We are now left with the situation, where all the arabs who have not been bought, see America-UK as "The new evil empire".
As iv stated here often the conflict is unfortunately now Islam V The West, and if we wish our lifestyle to continue as before, we have no option but to follow where our swine lead us.....Ake

I agree with that assessment akenaton. And what better metaphor for the now ages old Crusades than a battle raging in one of the world's largest graveyards, with an estimated 2 million people buried there?

Please define who the civil war will be between.   Is it the Shiites vs the Kurds? Or is it the Iraq govt vs the terrorists such as Al Sadr?   Or is it a fight over who runs the Iraq government?

The USA had a civil war and it ended slavery.   Despite the large number of people killed, that was probably a worthwhile outcome.   It also changed the hearts and minds.   No sane person supports slavery in the USA today- even in southern states who fought to preserve it.

Iraq must find its own way whether they will become a demoncarcy, a dictatorial governement or a terrorist state.    At least they have hope.   With Sadaam there was no hope.   If Libyia can denounce terrorism, there is hope that Iraq can do the same.
