Over the centuries the property passed between the Archbishops of York and Durham, until in 1572 the Regality and Liberty were formally transferred to the County of Northumberland. At this time, most of the privileges belonging to them were abolished. Sir John Fenwick gained possession of the Regality in 1632, and later died for the Jacobite cause. Well, this thread illustrates why. Many times I have posted an excerpt, and someone else soon afterwards posts the complete song. I'm not sure why. Maybe my excerpt piqued someone's curiosity, or caused them to recognize the song when they didn't recognize it by the title alone. Or maybe a thread with 3 messages attracts more attention than one with only 2. Or maybe it's only because I refreshed the thread, when it had dropped off the main forum page, and the right person hadn't seen it yet. Anyway, thanks, Bonnie, for vindicating my effort. |

I've always thought this song was Sir John Fenwick's land workers saying goodbye to each other and everything they knew & had grown up with, because surely JF's lands would have been confiscated by the crown - or someone on the winning side - after his execution for Jacobite sympathies, and everyone driven off them. I'm writing this off the top of my head at three in the morning (Irish time) but that's always been my take on it anyway. |

He was executed in 1696. A multitude of landowners large and small, many of them up and coming gentry benefited. I guess the only change for the small tenants was increased rent, as the new owners struggled to make something of their acquisition at a time of famine and hard weather. Some will have left the land: the increased number of Border "names" heading for the pits and industry around Newcastle can be seen in the Parish records of the C18. I believe Terry is singing about leaving Hexhamshire generally, the timeframe is up to the listener. Paws |

I chuckled just now to read James Lamond's comment that he was reduced tears by the song - the same happened to me. I was sitting, happily listening with my girlfriend beside me, when I was very suddenly overwhelmed, and to my complete surprise, exploded in laughter and tears at the same time. Impossible to explain. There's a lot wrapped up in that song. Would love to hear Terry Conway's version. |
