Lyr Req: Farewell/Fareweel Regality (Terry Conway)

Subject: Lyr Req: Farewell Fegality

Hello!

This is Terry Conway's song. It can be found for example on the CD "The Northumberland Collection", Kathryn Tickell & Friends.
Thank you in advance for any help in finding lyrics.

=)

Here's my attempt at a partial transcription from a couple of sound samples found online. Several words are highly doubtful.

FAREWEEL REGALITY
Terry Conway, 1984

...call the fates away from Hexhamshire.
And what is time that flies so fleet
But just a bird that flies on merry wings
And lights us down in happy spring
When winter's neet is past?

And we'll cry fareweel regality
And cry fareweel the liberty (?)
To honest spring's civility
To winter's frost and fire
And there's none that a could ... ye
To the peace and love gang wi ye....

FAREWELL REGALITY - Terry Conway (1984)

The Regality and Liberty were areas of local jurisdiction in
Hexhamshire which were granted to favoured individuals,
a practice that dated back to Anglo-Saxon times. Over the
centuries the property passed between the Archbishops of
York and Durham, until in 1572 the Regality and Liberty
were formally transferred to the County of Northumberland.
At this time, most of the privileges belonging to them were
abolished. Sir John Fenwick gained possession of the
Regality in 1632, and later died for the Jacobite cause.

And now it's time to say farewell
And though I hope that we may meet again
And all things may be reet again
We've lived and spent the day

        We'll cry farewell Regality
        And cry farewell the Liberty
        To honest friends' civility
        To winter's frost and fire
And there's nowt that I can bid ye
But that peace and love gan with ye
Never mind wherever call the fates
        Away from Hexhamshire

And what is time that flies so fleet
But just a bird that flies on merry wings
And lights us doon in happy spring
When winter's neet is past

Aye but the curlew sings her sang
And winds her sorrows doon the Rowley Burn
And drear as winds the hunter's horn
The call is all farewell

And as I set the mossy stones
And do me bits of jobs and gap the dykes
I hear the whisper doon the sykes
Farewell they sigh, farewell

Do I remember? Do I dream?
And did we rightly meet in Viewly Side?
For all this and much more beside
Has got me sore beguiled

But on some golden autumn morn
Or when July is hazing Dipton Slopes
By Whitley Mill or Westburnhope
We'll live and spend the day

Some people wonder why I bother to post brief excerpts of song lyrics transcribed from sound samples. Well, this thread illustrates why. Many times I have posted an excerpt, and someone else soon afterwards posts the complete song. I'm not sure why. Maybe my excerpt piqued someone's curiosity, or caused them to recognize the song when they didn't recognize it by the title alone. Or maybe a thread with 3 messages attracts more attention than one with only 2. Or maybe it's only because I refreshed the thread, when it had dropped off the main forum page, and the right person hadn't seen it yet.

Anyway, thanks, Bonnie, for vindicating my effort.

One of my favourite songs. I couldn't believe it was modern when I first heard it. Any chance you can post the URL for the online snippet, Jim?

Rachel Unthank and The Winterset's version of this song reduced me to a sobbing, but smiling, wreck. Absolutely stunning, both live and on 'The Bairns'. Is anybody else familiar with this version?

A great song.

I seem to be a bit Myspace-challenged: Is there a way to hear her singing Regality, or a portion of it, online? When I went to James' link, it started playing another track (also brilliant) and I couldn't work out how to find Regality (if it's on there in the first place).

Or, is there a YouTube, or something similar, of this song? (No luck there either, though I didn't wade through the million links the search box threw to me.) Apologies if this is a dumb question, but I will be really grateful to be able to hear her sing this. Many thanks -

Dunno, Bonnie, but strangely the Winterset seem to have a verbatim transcript of your explanation of the song, above from 2004, in their album liner notes!

Ah, it may be that I got them from somewhere else myself - I honestly can't remember if I wrote those notes myself or only copied them from someplace! Kathryn Tickell's CD, probably, not sure. Or the net?

Thanks so much for the link Tiajuanatime - going there now -

Yep, great. Thanks everyone for the heads-up. (If those notes are NOT on Kathryn's CD, I guess I must have cobbled them together because that's the only source I had to hand. If so, maybe they got it from good old Mucdat...?) My memory is getting creaky: I just know that I typed them onto the same sheet with the words, aeons ago.

Just come across this song on the R Uthank CD. What a belter! Sounds as if I have known it for a long time already - but that's an indication of a great song. Thanks to all for providing the info. I wonder if the songs is just about leaving Hexhamshire or about the abolition of the regality and liberty too. Any ideas anyone?

The Regality & Liberty seem to have been abolished long before. I've always thought this song was Sir John Fenwick's land workers saying goodbye to each other and everything they knew & had grown up with, because surely JF's lands would have been confiscated by the crown - or someone on the winning side - after his execution for Jacobite sympathies, and everyone driven off them. I'm writing this off the top of my head at three in the morning (Irish time) but that's always been my take on it anyway.

Sorry, I meant the privileges associated with their special status, before they were subsumed into Northumberland. (Note to self: don't post at 3 a.m. Go to bed like normal people do...)

Thanks, Bonnie. It felt to me that there was a reason for him to be leaving Hexhamshire - albeit regretfully - and that perhaps his opportunities hed become much more limited (or he was being forced out!).

By the way, I can't find a way to get Mudcat to automatically notify me if anyone adds to this thread. As the forum appears to be closed, could you or anyone else tell me how?

Many thanks

Sir John Fenwick's lands were sold off and otherwise distributed after sequestration in 1688. He was executed in 1696. A multitude of landowners large and small, many of them up and coming gentry benefited. I guess the only change for the small tenants was increased rent, as the new owners struggled to make something of their acquisition at a time of famine and hard weather. Some will have left the land: the increased number of Border "names" heading for the pits and industry around Newcastle can be seen in the Parish records of the C18.

I believe Terry is singing about leaving Hexhamshire generally, the timeframe is up to the listener.

For me Terry Conway's version of this song is the definitive one. Hearing that wonderful dialect singing those beauutiful sentimental words makes this Yorkshireman wish I'd been born 60 miles north so I could claim to be part of that regional group of family and friends who have guarded the integrity of their Northumbrian music so well.

I have to agree with 'buspassed' above. As well as being a songwriter of note Terry's singing, particularly ballads, has him IMHO up among the best.

The tune wrote for, and his rendition of, Mary Aumbree is excellent.

Great to come across this stupendous song and the appreciations of it expressed here. The greatness of it (and most other great art) surely is that it is at once highly specific, rooted if you like but also utterly universal. Or maybe its only me whose been "sore beguiled" by past memories or sought in vain to find the right words of goodbye for a friend.

Just wanted to join the chorus - I caught Rachel Unthank and the Winterset performing this song at a festival in a tiny Australian country town called Yackandandah.

I chuckled just now to read James Lamond's comment that he was reduced tears by the song - the same happened to me. I was sitting, happily listening with my girlfriend beside me, when I was very suddenly overwhelmed, and to my complete surprise, exploded in laughter and tears at the same time.

Impossible to explain. There's a lot wrapped up in that song. Would love to hear Terry Conway's version.

Totally agree with MF, although it deals with specific goodbyes it has a wonderful universal appeal about saying farewell. I convinced my son to play Terry Conway's version as the final song at his wedding last year {after Bonnie Tyle rhad done her worst!] and there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

I also love this song but have heard only Rachel Unthank & the Winterset's outstanding version, which is odd since I have a lot of Kathryn Tickell albums (though not where I am currently living).

Is there any online link that would enable to me hear Terry Conway singing his own song before I next have a chance to check whether I have the Tickell CD?

For those who don't know, Terry Conway died last week. I knew him from my early school days and he was a friend of my sister. He and his long-term partner as well as fellow musician, Liz Law, got married before he died. All I can say to both of them is "May be peace and love gan with ye"
