Lyr ADD: When Morning Stands on Tiptoe

Subject: Lyr Req: When Morning Stands on Tiptoe

Trying to find the words for this song - no luck in the DT - have also
tried under Echoing Horn. I know it is sung by Gary & Vera Aspey as I
had it on record (missing). As I remember it goes thus

When morning stands on tiptoe twixt mountain and sky (repeat)
How sweet it is to follow, how sweet it is to follow, how sweet it is to follow the hounds in full cry,
Echo bright echo the echoing horn etc.

Hoping someone out there in Mudcat land can help even though I am only
a guest. My only internet connection is through work at the moment, if
Father Christmas plays ball and I get back on line at home I will join
honest.

Many thanks

Pete

From Alfred Williams, Folk-Songs of the Upper Thames (Duckworth, 1923, p. 60; words only):
             WHEN MORNING STANDS ON TIPTOE

The following I consider about unsurpassed as a hunting song. There are several verbal errors, I expext, though they may not be serious. Obtained of Charles Messenger, Cerney Wick.

When morning stands on tiptoe 'twixt mountain and sky,
How sweet 'tis to follow the hounds in full cry!
             The hounds in full cry,
             The hounds in full cry,
How sweet 'tis to follow the hounds in full cry!

When the bright sparkling dewdrops the meadows adorn,
How sweet 'tis to follow the echoing horn!
             The echoing horn,
             The echoing horn,
How sweet 'tis to follow the echoing horn!

But 'tis still greater pleasure when love leads the way;
Then in to pursue joys lighter than they!
             Lighter then they,
             Lighter then they,
Then in to pursue joys lighter than they!

Yet they joys are divine when, pursuing, we find;
Then he's overtaken when the fair one proves kind,
             The fair one proves kind,
             The fair one proves kind,
Then he's overtaken when the fair one proves kind.

Peter,

The version we had on record had only two verses. The one you quote and a second thus:

When puss runs from cover, it was early in the morn (repeat)
How sweet it is to follow etc.

Does that help?

Masato, many thanks for posting the words to my request. There would,
however, appear to be differences to the ones I remember. Perhaps
it's my aged mental processor playing up. After all I always thought
that a gigabyte was food provided a a concert!

Thanks Joy, I thought there were more as per post from Masato.
Probably regional variations.

Another case of regional variations probably, as you say.

Well for the record, here's the version I know:

When morning stands on tiptoe, 'twixt mountain and sky (x2)
Oh how sweet it is to follow, oh how sweet it is to follow
Oh how sweet it is to follow the hounds in full cry

(Chorus:)
Echo, bright echo, the echoing horn
Echo, bright echo, the echoing horn
As she skims through the dew on a bright shining morn
We will follow the hounds with an echoing horn
Oh how sweet it is to follow the echoing horn

When glittering dewdrops the meadows adorn (x2)
Oh the bright smiling dewdrops…… (x3)
They spangle in the morn

All nature's so charming, so pleasant is the morn   (x2)
We will all join together…… (x3)
At the sound of the horn

When Puss rose from cover, 'twas early in the morn (x2)
Oh how sweet it is to follow…… (x3)
At the sound of the horn

Funny - can't recall where I got this text exactly, but I think it was Firm Friends I heard sing it first, and someone else sang it at the Ryburn club and Barnsley Easter Sing a couple of years back. I'll prod the memory later - need a beer!

I remember Stevie (and Pete) Geoghan singing this at an early Bromyard, in the late 1960s, and I picked up a 3 verse version too, then, similar to the version posted by Moorley Man. "When morning stands on tiptoe", followed by "When bright shining dewdrops", and then "When puss flies for cover", and including "sing echo bright echo the echoing horn, sing echo bright echo the echoing horn. As she skims through the dew on a bright shining morn, we will follow the hounds with an echoing horn.

Many thanks to all for your help, especially to Moorley Man - this
seems to be exactly the same as the version I heard all those years
ago. I suppose I'd better try and learn it now. Wareham Wail 2010
here I come.

"The Morning Stands On Tiptoe" was the title of the first LP by Dave & Toni Arthur in 1967, on Transatlantic records. It's many years since I heard it but I assume the title track is the same song, I seem to recall them singing it.

I believe it was released on an extended CD with their 2nd Album in the late 90's. Yes a quick Amazon UK search confirms that, although it doesn't seem to be currently available, just a used copy.

It was Gary & Vera I heard many years ago do the song a number of times and was subsequently at Stamford Folk Club then in the cellar bar at the Scotgate that they made the live recording that you hear on the album. My voice is lost in the rest as we belted out the chorus, an impressive sound in a cellar. It is this same album that has subsequently gone missing. Maybe I'll find it floating around in the bilge one day (does diesel affect vinyl?).

Ron Akehurst sings it, I join in on the chorus! I'll ask him!

I have this version, pillaged from the Aspeys and a Stourport based trio by the name of "Foxlocket". It used to be a regular sing at "The Seven Whistlers" Folk Club in Stourbridge, sung by myself and Bev Wightman.

When morning stands on tiptoe, 'twixt mountain and sky,
When morning stands on tiptoe, 'twixt mountain and sky,
Oh how sweet it is to follow, oh how sweet it is to follow,
Oh how sweet it is to follow the hounds in full cry.
Echo, bright echo, the echoing horn - o
Echo, bright echo, the echoing horn.
As she skims through the dew on a bright shining morn,
We will follow the hounds with an echoing horn.
Oh how sweet it is to follow the echoing horn.

When bright shining dew-drops the meadows adorn
When bright shining dew-drops the meadows adorn
We will all join together, we’ll all join together,
We will all join together at the sound of the horn

When Puss rose from cover, 'twas early in the morn
When Puss rose from cover, 'twas early in the morn.
Oh how sweet it is to follow, Oh how sweet it is to follow
Oh how sweet it is to follow the sound of the horn.

Original is by Bickerstaff, music by Arne, from Thomas and Sally, 1760. (Likewise of course 'The Sweet Nightingale' 'Sweetheart come along, don't you hear the fond song etc..) Original text can be found in 18th century songsters, where else? In Ecco:-)
