Accordion Teacher

In a moment of madness recently I bought a Piano Accordian, now all I have to do is learn to play the thing, which is where this request comes in. Does anybody know of anyone in South Wales who can teach me or recommend a good book to learn from? If it helps I can read music already.
Thanks in anticipation
Dave

Firstly, well done Dave! Brilliant choice of instrument; the best, actually. You are amongst friends here. And enemies! First lesson is to learn all accordion jokes, some of which are very good (how many guitarists does it takes to change a lightbulb? None, the accordion player can do it with his left hand) and then don't rise to the baiters.

I learnt the box over the water from you, on Mendip, but I guess every Tuesday night for a free lesson from Dave the Box would be a bit expensive in tolls, fuel and time. I'm afraid I don't know of any teachers in your patch. However, the finest Mudcat exponent of the accordion (to my knowledge), Sam Pirt, does occasional residential courses in Goole, East Yorkshire, and he's an inspirational teacher. You are also in time to go to the autumn Folkworks Weekend Workout, which is three days of excellent tuition in both your instrument, and participating in orchestra playing. That's usually in Darlington.

Good luck with your journey, and don't be downhearted with slow progress. Oh, and learn both hands at the same time. It's pants trying to put together two separate skills.

Hi Leadfingers & Skipjack,
Thanks for your replies, I'm just outside Caerphilly & thanks for the leads, when is the Folkworks workout? My partner's brother lives in North Yorkshire so we could possibly kill two birds with one stone as it were.

If you look at the 2nd related thread (Technique: Piano Accordion for The Recycled Muso) at the top of the page, you will get a lot of info, but no jokes sorry. Any fool you talk to will give you those... :-)

If you are already a muso (of some sorts) it should help you. You can comment there, or PM me.

There is a Gwent Accordion Band, led by a brilliant elderly gentleman called Glyn who is in his 80s now but what he can't play is probably not worth playing, and he teaches too. They meet every Wednesday at a British Legion Club, can't remember the name of the place but it might be Pontnewydd, there's a contact phone number which is 01633 874027

Good Luck

Lindsay

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the Info, It looks like that I've got plenty to be going on with, I'd heard that there was an Accordion club in Cwmbran, but no I have spoken to had any contact details. You never know, I may even be able to play a couple of tunes by the next Sidmouth!

Thanks again

Dave

Bejaysus, just listen to the girl! With talent like that, learning the instrument is a bit like asking for lessons in running the 100 metres in 9 seconds; technically possible, but starting training in the womb is prerequisite! She is absolutely amazing, and all power to her! Brilliant, Harriet!

Hi all
Rather than an accordion club I'd rather just have some 1 to 1 tuition. I read music very well and teach piano and singing (obviously have grade 8's in both) Just want to learn to play the accordion!

If you can already ready music I highly recommend the Palmer Hughes method. It would be easy for since you already read music..I taught from it for many years. It should be easy to find a teacher as the accordion is so richly popular in that part of the world. I’ve played for many years. I’m presuming that you have a piano accordion. If you have a button box I can’t help you but with a piano accordion it is so easy to learn. I know that I’m stepping out of my lane here but I think that the Palmer Hughes method will be help to you. I wish you luck with finding d teacher. You’ll enjoy playing the most wonderful instrument in the world. The left hand pushes two buttons and you get a full chord. Not like a piano where you have to form the chords with you’re entire hand. Please let me know how you make out with a teacher.
