So far, I can get good graphics, poor midi, and no synth. Is anyone else persuing anything like this? MD |

Well, as a UNIX fan for ages, I would, but I want a machine that will have useful working sound... so I do have an interest in this subject too... He has an onboard sound card, and can't seem to find sound apps that work well with it - they all seem to want PCI sound cards. Any suggestions? Robin |

Get him to try configuration with synaptic. Depends on what flavor he has, though. If you're Unix fan, try FreeBSD or the new Sun desktop. Sun isn't free but it's fairly cheap. |

He says that all the on board sound card will talk to now is the 'testprog' that came with the sound Linux SW... I believe he is using Redhat, but I'll check. I have used earlier incantations of SunOS at work, but being financially disadvantaged, I can't afford to pay very much, and if I have to totally provide my own support, then I might as well insist on totally free... 15 Aug 04 - 06:24 AM (#1247944) Subject: RE: Tech: MUSIC PROGRAMS UNDER LINUX From: treewind If you want to do serious audio recording and editing with Linux (this is rapidly becoming quite practical nowadays) take a look at Agnula (A GNU/Linux Audio Distribution) which not only includes lots of audio apps but also a kernel patched for low latency, which you need if you're doing any serious multitracking. There are two versions, one Debian-based and the other Red Hat-based. There's nothing to stop you using the same distro for ordinary computing too, and installing other applications from the main distribution it's based on. A good source for technical help is the Linux Audio Users List which I subscribe to. Documentation (or lack of, and doing something about it) has been a hot topic lately. There is an online archive available in several different views. The list is a good place to spot announcements of new software releases. I do all I need at the moment with arecord, audacity, normalize and cdrecord. Anahata |
