Wisbech folk solidarity - surreal event

Anyone out there ever been barred from a pub for parking in its car park?

Firstly, I write to let everyone know that next Tuesday's club will be held at The Swan in Parsons Drove(on the corner opposite the shop). There will be further details available from about the upcoming folk festival (concert on Frdiay night, dancing in the town onSaturday and fabulous Sunday afternoonat Elgood's Brewery). Everyone is welcome - singers and audience, since this the people from this club are the most welcoming & encouraging that I've found in Cambridgeshire.

I'm particularly pleased about the move as the beer never tasted quite as it should to my palate in all my trips out there from Cambridge, I found the landlord to be the least welcoming 'mine host' I've ever experienced, and he ruined what was set to be a fabulous last night at The Angel by banning one of the singers for parking in the car park - he told me he considered him to be 'arrogant'in finishing his song before happily moving his car (for a second time) to allow another customer out(the car park only holds about six cars, anyway so we're used to shifting around!). WE were all so stunned, amazed & affronted that we immediately upped gear and offed en masse, leaving him with a suddenly empty bar - power to the people! Ah well - what goes around comes around, as they say, and I'm fairly sure his attitude will rebound on him to his own detriment but also that of the pub's future (which might upset the brewery, a local company that values its customers in most hostelries in the area). I'm looking forward to The Swan next Tuesday - come all ye!

Well done! (for voting with you feet and leaving an empty pub)
Does this mean I should read the emails for fenfolk more carefully, because the Wisbech club has actually moved twice in short succession?

Well done indeed. I am ever surprised at the attitude of some landlords to a pub full of drinkers meeting on a regular basis, maybe they don't like changing barrels mid-evening or the noise stops the regulars from snoozing in front of the giant plasma tv screen.

As far as a visit to Elgood's is concerned, I wish I was there. Remenbering a visit made in the 70's when the head brewer showed us round explaining the crafting of good ale. He then took us to a shed at the back of the brewery, opened the door momentarily, said "this is where we MAKE the lager" closed the door and led us to the bar. A man after my own heart.

Power to the people.

I was once barred from the pub where my folk club happens for complaining about short measure in the bar . When the weights and measures people arrived the manager decided I had sent 'em in and barred me there and then . Must admit I DID send 'em , and the story has a happy ending 'cos the owners moved him on fairly soon .

I can confirm Leadfingers'story. It was a hell of a job sneaking him in housed in a banjo case. Fortunately left no room for the banjo which was transferred to my bodhran case. A tip for those superglueing necks back onto banjos - don't try. What happened to the bodhran I hear you ask, who cares!

Hi, all - thanks for the support you've expressed. Here's the link to the Wisbech Folk Club website, newly updated:

More details about the Folk Fayre singaround venue should appear soon at

Grrrr! Wish I could crack this 'live link' thing! I do it all day at work and it's fine - do it here and I fail miserably every time.

Hope to see you at the Folk Fayre.
Jennifer.

I know that pub landlords can get a bit funny at times but if some guy from a totally different town insists on blocking the exit to a totally full car park rather than leaving the vehicle around the corner and walking the last 100 yards then he was probably asking for it.
