It means (on this forum) someone who is not yet a member of the forum. A member has a membername, such as "Little Hawk" or "jOhn from Hull", and logs in with a secret code. A member can send private messages to another member, and is also eligible to reserve a future room at the NFCFTTS for whenever they slip into total incoherency.

it means technically that Mudcat has not set a cookie to allow a person to be 'recognized' when they sign on...there are certain things therefore they can't access...like private messages. Max & Jeff just named this 'guest' when they created the special services a few years ago.

Some do this for a reason, some because than can't set cookies at work...etc...

some simply refuse to be identified in ANY way, even by an anonymous name.

It's not quite as Little Hawk explained. The Guest tag can appear for members and non-members. All it tells you is that the user is not logged on as a member/doesn't have the cookie set.

On the other hand, a Guest with no name after it is almost always a regular member who has logged off to post something "out of identity." This is usually considered a very cowardly practice and shows complete shallowness of character because they do not have the nerve to speak up and attack someone in character. In other words, they are fakes and phonies both in and out of identity.

Ah, yes...I did not explain it fully. Even a member can log out, post as a Guest, then post as another Guest who disagrees with the first Guest. I don't doubt that this has been done.

Or someone who is posting in a hurry and/or does not realize their name will not appear.

It also sometimes happens that a member's cookie has crumbled and he or she hasn't noticed it.

It all depends on where you are logged in to or even from

But IF you are NOT a member you will be Guest without a handle , unless you add a name .

And, MOST Guests are really OK.....just browsers looking for info or lyrics...then again, we get the really nasty Guests who are looking to cause trouble. I have learned to ingnore them.

There's a song there.

I strode thru the mudcat as a guest with no name . . .

May take a little work. I'll be back.

I posted this elsewhere, but it seems to fit in here:

The GUEST ID was created because some posters were signing other members' IDs to their postings.

In the Mudcat, they used to know me by name
But one stale cookie and I was out of the game
