A friend is looking for songs about angels (not just mentioning angels). She is trying to find something to record fror a McDonald Safe House recording compelation album. The data base doesn't have much that seems appropriate. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Rene of the Sidmouth Middle Bar singers has a song with a chorus, that goes "Come, come, angel bands, come, come around me stand, bear me away on your heavenly wings to my heavenly home". Sorry, but I can't remember more of it!

One of my favs is "Mrs Adlam's Angels" by Ralph McTell. Very much about childhood innocence.

Words go something along the lines of:

Sundays as a rule
Us kids went to Sunday school
And Mrs Adlam said
Angels sit round our heads
To keep us safe from harm 'til morning light is done
And we used to lie awake just to see if we could see one ...

If this seems interesting I'll try and remember the rest of the words.

Gerry Colvin wrote a song called "Watching feathers fall". I can't find the lyrics, but I remember that it's a great song with brilliant lyrics. It's on Colvin Quarmby's cd "Beth's Electric Birthday".

Sara McLaughlin's (SP?)Angel
"in the arms of the angel far away from here
from this dark, cold hotel room and the emptiness that I feel
I am torn from the wreckage of my silent reverie
I'm in the arms of the angel, may I find some comfort here"

I think this is a brilliant song and believe it was featured in the film "City of Angels"

Norman and Nancy Blake have a great song called "Angel Gabriel" on their CD "The Hobo's Last Ride." And if anyone knows the missing word below, please post it !

Angel Gabriel
Norman Blake

Oh my soul, my soul is a'goin' for to rest,
In the arms of the Angel Gabriel
And I'll climb on a hill and I'll look through the mist
And I'll cross over Jordan to the Lamb
And I'll sit me down in the old armchair,
And brothers, I will never tire,
And old Satan may sneeze, But I will take my ease,
And I'll warm myself at the holy fire

CHORUS:
I will shout, I will dance, and I'll wake up early in the morn
And I will arise as I rub my sleepy eyes,
When old Gabriel's blowing on the horn x2

Oh my soul, my soul is a 'goin' for to rest
Oh a rest as sure as I am born
And I'll look like a blackbird sitting on a nest
When old Gabriel is blowin' on the horn
And I'll leave my clothes set upon the shore
For I'll have heavenly garments to wear
And I'll have plenty of shoes and I'll never get the blues
And the angels will come and curl my hair
CHORUS

Oh I shan't weep when I'm a 'goin' to leave
So I'll pack up my trunk and I'll go
And my brother old ___   (?) don't you ever grieve
For I'm going up to glory very slow.

And I'll eat my meals there three times a day
You can bet your life I won't be late
And I'll have lots of fun when you would rather come
For I'm going to take tickets at the gate
CHORUS

Was there a seven Spanish angels?

in Latin..Panis Angelicus
and Ecce Panis Angelorum (very very pretty)

Here's one of mine...

Chorus:
Shine your light on me shine your light on me
Angels of mercy shine your light on me
As it was in the beginning is now will ever be
Angels of mercy shine your light on me

There's trouble in the city there's trouble on the farm
Angels of mercy shine your light on me
If I can not be of help at least I'll do no harm
Angels of mercy shine your light on me

Some are drownding in the ocean some are drownding in the sea
Angels of mercy shine your light on me
They are drownding in despair over what they cannot be
Angels of mercy shine your light on me

Some will die in sorrow and some will die in pain
Angels of mercy shine your light on me
An angel came and told me that no one dies in vain
Angels of mercy shine your light on me

Agree with BFG and Turlough

Gerry Colvin has written some lovely songs and "Feathers" is one of my favourite. Feathers that could fall from an Angel while they were having a disco in heaven. www.colvinquarmby.com here is the lyrics...

"So here we are, Just you and me, Watching the stars and sitting here quietly, Its been a long week, its been a long day, its been a long time, since we have been this way.

Listen to the beating of their wings, Moving to the rhythm of the wind, We're lying on our backs watching feathers fall from Angels.

Those Angels know how to dance, At the celestial ball, You know the rumba, the lambada and the waltz and the samba those Angels know them all, Watch those Cherubim grab those seraphim as they start to spin and the Choir sings....

Listen to the beating of their wings, Moving to the rhythm of the wind, We're lying on our backs watching feathers fall from Angels."

Fran and BFG,

I remember the "story behind the song" that Gerry told. He said he'd written it for his father. Anybody who has ever seen Gerry perform, can imagine that, as a child, he was hyperactive. His father had invented a story to allow him to get rid of all this excess energy: he told him that, every night, angels went to a ball, where they danced so wildly that they lost some of their feathers. So Gerry used to run around every night before he had to go to bed, hoping to find one of these feathers.

Here's a few spirituals I sing with the children at school:
CHATTER WITH THE ANGELS
Chatter with the angels, soon in the morning,
Chatter with the angels, all day long.
Chatter with the angels, soon in the morning,
Chatter with the angels, all day long.
I hope to join that band and
Chatter with the angels, all day long.
I hope to join that band and
Chatter with the angels, all day long.

ANGEL BAND
There was 1, there were 2, there were 3 little angels,
There were 4, there were 5, there were 6 little angels,
There were 7, there were 8, there were 9 little angels,
Ten little angels in that band.
Oh, wasn't that a time, Sunday morning,
Sunday morning, Sunday morning,
Oh, wasn't that a time, Sunday morning,
Sunday morning, soon?

Good luck!

Allison

Angels Among Us...By Julie Matthews...Beautiful!!!

Angels Walk Among Us - Julie Matthews
Do you remember you were down on your luck
You held your hand out to a stranger?
Something in his eyes
You almost recognised
Something in that look changed you
Took you out of the madness
Somehow made you stronger
I believe that Angels walk among us

I believe Angels walk among us
I Believe, I believe Angels walk among us

All she remembers is, she was falling
And the ground was getting nearer
"Oh! God forgive me" she said, "please be with me
In this moment it all seems clearer"
With 20 feet left to fall, she stalled
And her skirt blew out around her
Set her down
Where Angels walk among us

I believe Angels walk among us
I Believe, I believe Angels walk among us

We get so caught up in the smaller stuff
We miss the bigger picture
`Til something so profound knocks us down
And suddenly it hits you
Angels among us

It's in the eyes of the sleeping child
And the mothers look of wonder
It's in the arms of the one I love
And the magic spell I'm under
It's in the feeling there's someone here
When I'm sitting on my own
I'm not alone, 'Cause Angels walk among us

I believe Angels walk among us
I Believe, I believe Angels walk among us
I believe Angels walk among us
I Believe, I believe Angels walk among us

Hi Big Jim,
Jimmie Kennedy wrote a song called "The Angles Are Lighting Gods Little Candles". This was recorded by Hank Snow many years ago. He can be heard singing it on The Record Lady site under the title "Gods Little Candles." I think that this song may be just what you are looking for.

A new one on me, heard at Innerleithen Folk Festival last weekend "Angel of the North" by Enda Kenny: it's about the huge sculpture on the hill overlooking Gateshead and Newcastle: it was sung by Judy Dinning of "Real Time" and she said her ambition was to sing it in St. James' Park (No, not the one in London! - Newcastle United's football stadium!) It has the potential to become a really big football anthem!! The CD by Real Time is called "Hell or High Water"
