Just heard a great bluegrass song on the radio. Don't know who was singing it. First line was "The Dow Jones took a dive today, another bank closed it's doors." Anyone know where I can find the lyrics.

Thanks

Fi

Wow, is Mudcat going to fail me for the first time ever. Have just found out the version I was listening to was sung by Del McCoury if that helps.

Cheers

F

Seen on a German beer krug in a bar on the Isle of Wight
"Mann kann nicht am Brot allein leben.
Er muss Schinken und Bier gehabt"
Must have been a folkie.

MAN CAN'T LIVE ON BREAD ALONE (note "on," not "by") was written by Dean Presley and Jeff Presley. It was recorded by The Del McCoury Band on "It's Just the Night," McCoury Music CD #1, 2003. I transcribed this from a sound sample at allmusic:

The Dow Jones took a dive today. Another bank closed its door.
A man downtown tried to fly away from a ... on the eighteenth floor
Ev'rything he worshipped ain't worth nothin' now.
He had a Jaguar in the driveway, a house with eighteen rooms.
Ev'ry night he dined alone, fed from a silver spoon.
Guess he never figured out you ain't what you own....

MAN CAN'T LIVE ON BREAD ALONE
Dean Presley, Jeff Presley

The Dow Jones took a dive today. Another bank closed its doors.
A man downtown tried to fly away from it all on the eighteenth floor,
And everything he worshipped ain’t worth nothing now.

He had a Jaguar in the driveway, a house with eighteen rooms.
Every night he dined alone, fed from a silver spoon.
Guess he never figured out you ain't what you own.
Man can't live on bread alone.

CHORUS: You can't fill your heart with silver and gold.
You've got to have some love to satisfy your soul.
We've got to pool together to make it on our own.
Man can't live on bread alone.

There's a country store that sits out on a backwoods gravel road.
The owner lets the poor folks slide if they can't pay what they owe.
He says its only money; ain’t no good when you're gone.

Now he'll never be a rich man but he's smiling every day.
He's gets everything he needs by giving it away.
I think he's got it figured out: You ain't what you own.
Man can't live on bread alone. CHORUS
