Heard from an old Royal Marine Sergeant Major:

Indicate to me the way to my abode,
I'm fatigued and I wish to retire,
I had a small beverage sixty minutes ago,
and it went right to my cranium ....

Sadly the rest was lost in the haze.

Indicate thwe route to my abode,
I'm fatigued and desire to retire.
I partook of liquid potions sixty minutes ago,
And it's gone right to my cerebellum.
Where ever I may perambulate,
On land or sea or agitated water,
You will always hear me chanting this refrain.
Indicate the route to my abode.

Indicate the way to my boat,
I'm fatigued and I want to retire.
I indulged sixty minutes ago
And It went right to my cerebellum.
Where ever I may perambulate,
Over land or sea or atmospheric vapor,
You will always hear me crooning
this melody,
Indicate the way to my boat.

I had it as follows:-

Indicate the route to my abode,
I'm fatigued and I want to lie down,
I imbibed a little beverage sixty minutes ago
And it proceeded to my cranium,
No matter where I perambulate
On earth, water or suspended water vapour
You will always hear me crooning this melody
Indicate the route to my abode!

All together now.......

Back as a boy journalist in the heady town of Redditch, we used to sing the following version in the Oddfellows Arms...

Indicate the way to my abode
I'm weary and desirous of repose
I took a little beverage an hour ago
And it's penetrated to my c-ranium..

No matter where I perambulate
O'er land or sea or alcoholic beverage
You will always hear me humming this melody
Indicate the way to my abode.

Indicate the direction of my abode
I am fatigued and desirous of recuperative restoration
I indulged in a minimal beverage approximately sixty minutes previously
And it's directly entered the place that keeps my ears apart
Irrespective of the whereabouts of my perambulations
Over terra firma or briny deep or effervescent border
You will constantly detect me crooning this melody
Indicate the direction of my abode

(lacking an intermediate upper garment)

You may find that you have to alter the note values somewhat to make it fit. My dauughter Jenny (8) loves it!

From Victoria in the 1940's
Indicate to me the route to my abode,

I imbibed some refreshment sixty minutes ago,
and it's gone right to my cerebellum
Wherever I may perambulate
on land or sea or agitated water
you will always hear me humming this melody

Followed by (n Victoria; NSW used Sydney references);
Show me the way to go home
said the blonde on St Kilda Beach (or Bondi Beach, in Sydney)
I lost my togs about an hour ago
and they've floated out of reach
So all I have on now
is sand and sea and foam
so hand me a page of "The Sporting Globe" ("The Sunday Sun" in Sydney)
and show me the way to go home.

Folowed by the original to finish

British version from ca 1960 - same but different

Show me the way to go home
I'm a blonde on Blackpool Beach
I lost my bikini half an hour ago
And it's gone right out of reach
All I'm wearing now
Is seaweed, sand and foam
So hand me a copy of "The News of the World"
And show me the way to go home.

I loved this version from the late Derek Moffat of The McCalmans who himself was given to taking the odd refreshment.

Home the way to go show
I'm to bed and I want to go tired
I drink a little hour about a had ago
And it's head right to my gone
No roam where I matter
On foam or or sea land
You can always hear me songing this sing
Home me the way to go show.

Best sung in a rather slurred voice but very seriously and made much easier by the consumption of several large malts!

Show me the way to go home.
I'm tired and I want to go to bed.
I had a little drink about an hour ago,
And it went right to my head.
Wherever I may roam,
On land or sea or foam,
You will always hear me singing this song:
Nobody knows
How dry I am,
And nobody knows how to
Show me the way to go home.

I didn't know anyone else had got there first, so put this together without having heard or read any of the other versions. Strangely similar.

Indicate the route to my habitual abode,
I'm excessively fatigued and I need to seek repose.
Some 60 minutes ago I took an alcoholic libation,
and it's seriously affected my cranial efficiency,
Regardless of where I perambulate,
O'er terra firma, aquatic expanse or watery particulate,
You'll invariably encounter me performing this refrain,
Indicate the route to my abode.

A Mudcatter (Who Shall Remain Nameless) contacted me for lyrics to "Show Me the Way to Go Home." She was going to perform for a convent-load of nuns, and the nuns requested this song to close the program.

I'm sure I learned the song myself while I was attending Catholic elementary school....

Strange this was one of "the College " songs at the Catholic teacher training college in Newacstle upon Tyne which was attached to a convent.
I wonder if it is a nun thing. The noisiest corridor in the place was the nuns corridor.

Nuns tend not to be as rigid as religious men seem to be. If it's a good song, nuns are likely to enjoy it, despite the taboos.
