If N.S.
The Old Triangle , O'Carrols , Split Crow, Lower Deck should be a good start.

George Seto may pick up on this thread. He will have a good idea of the local scene there.

I've already e-mailed them. Lots of fun all week long at both the Old Triangle and O'Carrolls.

Lower Deck is only for when McGinty are playing there.

Song circle every wednesday from 7 to 10 pm at the ferry terminal in Dartmouth, across the harbour.

O'Caroll's usually has a good session.
Old Triangle is owned by "Evans and Doherty" so a good time to be had.
Split Crow is good with hte right band playing, not sure if they have sessions though.
Lower Deck..yeah..McGinty is good. So are The Navigators if you catch them there. No Dancing at the LD though!..shame..
...Enjoy..good time of the year in HAlifax...Slainte!

In my experience, the Split Crow often has good bands, but it is not a good place to listen to music. It's a popular bar and people go there to drink. Conversation tends to be at the top of peoples' lungs.

The Old Triangle ought to be good, since it is owned by Evans and Doherty, who are two excellent musicians, but the last time I was there I was disappointed. They give the impression that they've been at the game so long they no longer have to try very hard. They were just churning out the kind of quasi-folkie, Irish bar band standards they think the tourists want. I really don't want to hear another rendition of Inch by Inch, Row by Row, thank you very much. I'm actually a fan of Evans & Doherty and I have some of their recordings, so I don't want to discourage you from going to the Old Triangle. I know they have a much better repertoire than I heard during my last visit.

Thanks to 8ch for that post about the song circle. I may check it out the next time I'm in Halifax.

The Halifax Folklore Centre might be a place to find information about sessions, but I asked there a few years ago, and they didn't have much to tell me. It seems there are plenty of bars with live music in Halifax, but not so much in the way of sessions. Perhaps this thread will prove me wrong.

The song circle is in the food court area. If you take the ferry from Halifax to Dartmouth, just turn left and continue inside to the far end of the building.

CET,

Depends on the day of the week you go. Normally, Wednesday and Thursday are quieter nights and I will request odd songs which aren't your usual Irish Pub fare.

Evans & Doherty judge by the audience at hand and go where the energy level seems to be. If there is more of a listening audience, they'll sing some of the more ballad type songs.

Most good bands will go the way the audience seems to want.

If you want to make suggestions, write it down and send it up to the band on the stage. Worse thing is they won't do it!

The information I had from castlebay was they were here between Sunday and Tuesday nights, leaving Wednesday, so I haven't offered the sessions on Wednesday.
