Lyr Req: 'Chariots of Fire' - a Christian song

From: Gary

There are words to the music of Chariots of Fire sung as a Christian hymn. We've sung them in the past and would like to find them again. Goes something like: Come ride in my life, Lord Jesus Christ, My Lord and my Master Come ride in my life, Lord Jesus Christ, And make me a chariot of fire.

I thought the line came from Blake's "Jerusalem", which is sung (rarely, outside of England) as a hymn in the Anglican church.

Bring me my bow of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spear, O clouds unfold
Bring me my chariot of fire
I will not cease from mental strife
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

If this is the one, there was a thread on it some time ago.

Gary, The title of the song is MAKE ME A CHARIOT OF FIRE. I can't tell you who wrote the words, but here they are:

I rise up to worship, I stand to acclaim,
The King of all glory, Christ Jesus his name.

I ask you King Jesus, fulfill this desire,
Ignite me and make me a chariot of fire.

Come ride on my life, Lord Jesus Christ
My King and my Master, come ride on my life,
To this one goal I wholly aspire.

Come rule in my heart, Lord Jesus Christ
My King and my master, come ride on my life,
And I will be a chariot of fire.

Craig

Re: the hymn that Craig posted above. Oddly, I can't find it anywhere on the Internet. However, I did find a brief quote that contains the word "proclaim" rather than "acclaim." "Proclaim" sounds right to me.

I am looking for a version of Chariots of Fire using the music from the movie Chariots of Fire. It goes something like this. There are more words but I can't remember them.

Come ride on my life Lord Jesus Christ
My king and my master
Come ride on my life and I will be a chariot of fire.

Give glory to God Church
Give glory to God
Give glory to God Church
Give glory to God

Come ride on my life Lord Jesus Christ
My king and my master
Come ride on my life Lord Jesus Christ
And I will be a chariot of fire.

We used to sing this song at Women's Aglow many years ago. The music is the same as was the theme song music from the movie Chariots of Fire and the words we sang are as follows:

I rise up to worship, I stand to acclaim,
The King of all glory, Christ Jesus his name.
I ask you Lord Jesus, fulfill this desire,
Ignite me and make me a chariot of fire.
Chrous - Come rule all my life, Lord Jesus Christ,
Be Master and King! Come rule all my life,
Lord Jesus Christ, Be my everything.

I've fought the good fight. I've run the race.
Soon stand in His presence, gaze on His sweet face.
'Twas mercy that saved me, and mercy yet reigns,
"Well done good and faithful" … lost life is but gain.
Chorus - You've ruled all my life Lord Jesus Christ,
You're Master and King! You've ruled all my life,
Lord Jesus Christ … You're my Everything!

Amen!!!

Wow, I have always loved this song and also cant remember all the words I originally learned but here is part of what I remember.

Your presence surround me, I'm free like the wind.
Your beauty astonds me, I know peace within
I'll rise like an eagle, on wings of the wind
To vistas of glory, and never descend

For You are breath, my life, my joy
You're beauty to me
I give You my heart, my soul, my love
I give all to Thee.

and another part (again that I can't fully remember)

When trouble surrounds me, confusion abides
I look to the one God who's turning the tide

I remember these words:
All praise to the Father, all praise to the Son
All praise to the Spirit, great God Three in One

How great is my Lord, my God and King
So worthy of praise
A Father of love is He to me
And worthy of praise

Has anyone heard that version? My music teacher in Farrarmere Primary School, Mrs Trimble taught us that one.

I tried to make a clickey, but at the age of 64 I find I don't have the time for it to connect. There is a good write up about the poem/song/hymn at

These are very rich wonderful lyrics to sing to the tune: "Chariots of Fire"

"The Mountain of God" to the tune 'Chariots of Fire'

1. We tread in their footsteps, where prophets have trod;
we come to the mountain, the presence of God.
The bush that was burning with fire all around;
we stand there with Moses, on holy ground.

O give me the eyes and ears of faith, to answer Your call!
O give me a heart on fire with love to give You my all.

2. The mountain of meeting, of covenant law,
created a people of worship and awe.
Delivered from bondage, the blood was their sign;
they sang of redemption; we stand in their line.

O give me….

3. The glory of Jesus, majestic to see;
Up high on a mountain, transfigured was he.
Elijah and Moses appeared from the past,
predicting salvation accomplished at last.

O give me...

4. We come to Mount Zion, of suffering love;
The church of the firstborn, redeemed from above.
The Cross is our glory, its value unpriced;
a love ever-burning in Jesus the Christ.

O give me…

I remember different lyrics, something like:

Give glory to God, man,
Give glory to God,
Give glory to God, man,
Give glory to God.

Give glory to Him, alleluia,
Give glory to Him.

This is from my memory from the early 1980's, so I don't remember everything.

We found this worked over the Olympics fortnight:-

On top of spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.

It rolled off the table,
And on to the floor,
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled out of the door.

It rolled in the ga-a-a-arden,
And under a bu-ush,
And then my poor mea-ea-eatball,
Was nothing but mush.

So if you eat spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
Hold on to your meatball,
Whenever you sneeze.

TO LIVE FOR MY FATHER
Randy Hongo, the author of the lyrics, recommitted his life to God at Urbana `67. Randy wrote these words the morning after his first viewing of the movie CHARIOTS OF FIRE: -

To live for My Father, rejoice in His will,
To live for My Father, His pleasure fulfill.
To work for My Father, committing my hands;
To go where He leads me, to far away lands.

Each day brings new opportunities to grow in His love:
Becoming the one I am to be - like Jesus above.
And when I am tested, brought to trial by earthly cause:
Steadfastly I stand, no compromise, and live by His laws.

To run for My Father: His chosen desire,
My feet rush to praise Him in His Spirit`s power.
To live for My Father, rejoice in His will,
To live for My Father, His pleasure fulfill.

Great to have words to Christian song to the tune of 'Chariots of Fire' called "The Mountain of God', dated 17-6-2012. However, does anyone have the full version where the first verse starts with "I rise up to worship, I stand to acclaim".

I think there are about 4 verses with chorus after each verse. Would be great to get the words. Thanks.

"Here are the lyrics to a song called "Make me a chariot of fire" that I found on a couple sites.

I rise to worship, I stand to acclaim;
the King of all glory, Christ Jesus His Name.

I ask you, Lord Jesus, fulfull this desire;
Ignite me and make me a chariot of fire.

Come ride on my life, Lord Jesus Christ;

Come rule in my heart, Lord Jesus Christ;
My King and my master, come ride on my life
And I will be a chariot of fire.

The music, of course, was composed by Vangelis for the 1981 film "Chariots of Fire". Based on the wording and the lack of many sources about this hymn, I'd guess these are probably lyrics that were "home-grown", and then spread around to different churches and worship groups.

God bless!
Steve"

Oh my goodness. Back in 1982 (when I was in middle school) I attended a youth retreat called "Sought Out." When we sang that song with its inspirational and uplifting keyboard tones, I thought I'd discovered the holy grail! Whenever I would hear the song, I thought I had a leg up on my fellow classmates in public school.
The version I learned is in pieces in the above thread. ..

Give glory to God, church
Give glory to God,
Give glory to God, church
Give glory to God,

Give praise to the Father,
Give praise to the Son,
Give praise to the spirit,
The great three-in-one

Blah blah blah... chariot of fire

So ... was the main theme of the movie "Chariots of Fire" taken from an existing hymn (as described above), or is it an original instrumental composition by Vangelis to which others subsequently added words?

Although he was sued, unsuccessfully, by one Stavros Logaridis, who claimed that it was plagiarised from one of his (Logaridis') compositions. Vangelis' defence was that he had already used the key musical sequence when he was with Aphrodite's Child.

Vangelis of course did take music from an existing hymn, namely Jerusalem, for that movie, but that was a different piece of music.

And Eric Liddell, the subject of the "Chariots of Fire" film was himself a devout Christian, a missionary,as well as being an international athlete and rugby player. He refused to run on a Sunday in his best event, the 100metres, in the Paris Olympics of 1924.
And here in Edinburgh,we have the "Eric Liddell Centre" housed in a de-consecrated church on a road junction known as "Holy Corner" as there are (were) churches on each of the 4 corners of the junction!
