Help. Can anyone let me have the website for Barrie Roberts, songwriter, please? I can't find it anywhere but I know it's out there somewhere. PM me if you can. Thanks

Thanks folks. barrieroberts.com is the address I had to send him the photos he wants but it keeps coming up not available. Barrie Roberts isn't the same guy I don't think as, as far as I know, he's not a solicitor. There again...

I think he is the same guy. Among his former occupations on the website, it does say "folksinger."

Hello again, Cats.

It seems to me that I'm always having to confess to things on Mudcat ---still, they say it's good for your soul. I confess that I am BR, songwriter, and that though I was never a solicitor (and before all you Americans laugh, that's English for an attorney) I was, for many years a solicitor's clerk.
Sorry you couldn't get into my website. I don't know why, another Mudcatter has contacted me thro' it in the last couple of days. The address really is www.barrieroberts.com, but if it really won't cooperate, try my alternative at www.barrie.roberts2@btopenworld.com. One or another should reach me.

It is rather confusing to Americans, not because we don't know what a solicitor is, but because the site describes Barrie as a Criminal Lawyer.

Is a solicitor's clerk also an attorney?

If not can you be a lawyer but not an attorney in English parlance?

In American parlance, generally Lawyer and Attorney are synonyms.

"Criminal lawyer" does sound like a tautology, doesn't it?

A 'criminal lawyer' ought to mean a lawyer who commits crimes (thankyou Steve!) or should be expressed as a 'criminous lawyer' i.e. a lawyer concerned with crime.
A lawyer is someone who practises law, qualified, licensed or not.
A solicitor is a lawyer qualified and licensed to do various things, like appearing as an advocate in lower courts.
A barrister is a lawyer and advocate licensed and qualified under a different set of rules, who can appear in any court. He can only be hired by a solicitor.
A legal executive is a posh modern name for what used to be called a solicitor's clerk, i.e. someone who does the real work in a solicitor's office while the boss is playing golf.
An attorney is someone you appoint to act in your place. If you appoint him to act for you in legal matters he is an attorney-at-law.
I trust that makes it all much more confusing!

We are many. We can be instructed by solicitors, many of whom are also women. In my experience, an attorney-at-law usually means a struck-off solicitor.

Lady Barrister,
My profound apologies for the implied sexism of my using 'he' to refer to a barrister, but for most of my days in the law most barristers were male. Nevertheless, I always briefed what I thought to be the right person for the case, and that included a good many lay barristers over the years.

Yes, it's not quite the same here in the states. We are a bit stuffier about licenses, etc. It would be very unusual to call someone a lawyer OR an attorney unless they had a law degree and a license to practice. Though I suppose a "disbarred attorney" is still an attorney over here.

And though you can have "power of attorney" for someone, that does not make you an attorney.

I presume that by "lay barrister" you meant to write "lady barrister", Barrie? If not, you've introduced a further layer of confusion!

Steve -- how very perceptive of you! Now just mention 'Freudian slips' and I'll send you a lifelong e-curse.
Nerd -- strictly speaking, in England, an attorney is someone who holds your 'power of attorney', whether he's a lawyer, solicitor, folksinger, struck-off lawyer or plain oldfashioned crook.

Hi Cats! --- a message from the past!
Almost a year ago you were going to send me photos of 'The Coward's grave' from my song.
You ended up with both my e-mail addresses. Whatever happened? Are you OK?

Cats --- I promise you that I am not going about impersonating you! It was the Mudcat Gremlin wot did it.

The questions, however, remain --- What happened and are you OK?

Barrie Roberts (the real one)
