Here you go:

WHISKEY YOU'RE THE DEVIL

CHORUS:
Whiskey you're the devil, you're leadin' me astray
Over hills and mountains and to Americae.
You're sweeter, stronger, decenter, you're spunkier than tae;
Oh, Whiskey, you're me darlin' drunk or sober.

Verses
1: Oh, now, brave boys, we're on the march
And off to Portugal and Spain.
The drums are beating, banners flying;
The devil ahome will come tonight.

Love, fare the well
With me tithery eye, the doodelum, the da,
Me tithery eye, the doodelum, the da,
Me rikes fal, tour a laddie, Oh
There's whiskey in the jar. Hey!

2. The French are fighting boldly,
Men are dying hot and coldly.
Gives ev'ry man his flask of powder,
His farlock on his shoulder.

Love fare the well. . .

3. Said the mother, "do not wrong me;
Don't take my daughter from me.
For if you do, I will torment you,
And after death a ghost will haunt you."

Love fare the well. . .

That's it. Hope you enjoy. Incidentally, there is a good book of some of the songs that the Clancys do (that's where I got these lyrics from). It is called "The Irish Songbook; 75 Songs collected, adapted, written and sung by The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem." It published by Oak Publishing and is a really good book if you enjoy the Clancy brothers.

Enjoy.

I have the book--I've wondered if 'farlock' should be 'firelock' on his shoulder. The book says 'farlock.'

Yep! Firelock - sometimes "flintlock".

In the second chorus as I learned it from a Mackem & Clancy song book, they sing "tithery eye the do da dum the da", but I've heard it with a seires of words that I think included "whiskey" & "barley". Does anyone no that variation.

From: Gary T

Guest, I have to say the chord sequence you provided doesn't fit the tune as I know it. Trapper's is close, but I would disagree with a couple of chord placements. Here's how I would do it:

      c
Oh, whisky you're the devil
F
You're leading me astray
F C
Over hills and mountains
G
And to Amerikay
C
You're sweeter, stronger, decenter
F
You're spunkier nor tay
F C
Oh whisky you're me darling'
G C
Drunk or sober

Although the tune of the verse is somewhat different, it follows the same chord sequence.

Here are the chords to the whole thing, according to The Irish Songbook (that Clancy/Makem thing)

Chorus:
(C)Whiskey, you're the (C7)devil, you're (F)leading me a(C)stray,
(F)Over hills and (C)mountain and (D7)to Ameri(G7)cae.
You're (C)sweeter, stronger (C7)decenter, you're (F)spunkier than tae;
O, (C)Whiskey, you're my darlin', drunk or (G7)so(C)ber.

Verse:
Oh, (C)now, brave boys, we're on the march
And (G7)off to Portugal and Spain.
The (F)drums are beating, (C)banners flying;
The (D7) devil a-home we'll (G7)come tonight.
(C)Love, (G7)fare thee (C)well with me tithery eye, the doo-de-lum, the da,
Me(G7)tithery eye, the doo-de-lum, the da,
Me (F)rikes fall, tour a (C)laddie,
Oh, there's whiskey (G7)in the (C)jar. Hey!

***

I tried to sing it, to test these -- but C is a bad key for moi, so I'll have to knock it down to A to check them.

From sheet music found at The Library of Congress American Memory Collection:

WHISKEY YOU'RE THE DIVIL.
IRISH COMIC SONG.
Written and Composed by Jerry Barrington.
Arrd. By R. Steirly.
New York: E. H. Harding, 1873.

1. Now, brave boys, we're on for marching,
Off to Portigil and Spain.
Drums are beating, colors flying,
Divil a home we'll go again.

CHORUS: Love, farewell.
With my re arruh arrah, with my re arruh arrah,
My re arruh a raddy, oh! There's whiskey in the jar.
Oh, whiskey, you're the Divil. You've led me astray,
Over hills, and over mountains, and out of the way.
You're stronger, sweeter, decenter, and spunkyer than tea.
Oh, whiskey, you're my darling, drunk or sober.

2. Says the mother, "Do not wrong me.
Do not take my daughter from me,
For if you do, I will torment you,
And after death, my ghost will haunt you."

3. Now the drums are beating boldly.
Men are dying hot and coldly.
Give ev'ry man his flask of powder,
And his fire-lock on his shoulder.

Another of the many songs written in America during the 19th c.
Jerry Barrington may have been an immigrant, but nothing in Google.

Gayle Wade sent this version.

WHISKY YOU'RE THE DEVIL
Artist: Bella Hardy [amended by Gayle Wade]

Come on brave boys, we're marching off to foreign wars
Drums a' beating, banners flying
The Devil is there to guide your swords.
Love fare you well
    CHORUS:
Oh, whisky you're the devil, you're leading me astray
Over hills and mountains and to Americay
You're sweeter, stronger, decenter than any man my way
Whisky you're my darling drunk or sober

If you've no taste for whisky, let wormwood steal your soul
If you're looking for false hearted girls
The Devil, tonight my home you'll see
Love fare you well
CHORUS

The sea's too full of witchcraft, you'll sooner sink than swim
But if you reach the furthest shore
The Devil is there to take you in.
Love fare you well
CHORUS

They say new friends are silver, and old friends they are gold
But when your friends have drunk you dry
The Devil is there to take your soul.
Love fare you well

CHORUS x 3: Oh, whisky you're the devil, you're leading me astray
Over hills and mountains and to Americay
You're sweeter, stronger, decenter than any man my way
Whisky you're my darling drunk or sober

from Gayle: The change I made is that in the original version, the third line of every verse is the same "The Devil, tonight my home you'll see". In my opinion, that only fits the second verse, so I wrote some different lines for the other verses.
