Summer 1963 their record Hootenanny b/w It's Sister Ginny's Turn To Throw The Bomb made the US top 40 (peak 38) and was released in many other countries all over the world (and got a modest Australian chart position). That's about all it seems that is to be found on the net about this group. Can anyone supply any additional info on the group, names, members, origin, history, ...? Intention is to use the information on the liner notes for a release on the Australian label Canetoad Records |

From: PoppaGator For what it's worth, Chaminade HS was/is a very large all-boys college-prep Catholic high school there in Long Island. (I'm hedging on the tense -- "was/is" -- because, like other such institutions, CHS may have become coeducational in the years since I went to college with a few of its graduates.) Ergo, the three girls who joined The Glencoves could not have been schoolmates, and membership may likely have increased from 3 to 6 sometime after the group's high-school beginnings. |

He was a skilled guitar and banjo player. I recall a school talent show in which Don performed a banjo instrumental version of the Notre Dame fight song. I rememeber his saying that he was a member of the Glencoves and that they had a record which had some success. I remember he had a beautiful Gibson Hummingbird guitar and I began learning to finger pick by watching him play. I also recall that he was a very nice fellow. John Greene john.c.greene@snet.net |

From: GUEST,Bill Byrne As noted above Don Connors was the lead singer and banjo player Brian Bolger, played guitar and sang harmony as did I on the song Hootenanny. Brian can be reached at 301-898-5409 and I can be reached at 304-291-1328. We were not a boy/girl group as stated in one of the first notes. The three girls who appear on the sheet music are my two sisters Eileen Byrne and Susan Byrne Picciano and Sandy Kavanaugh who's family was responsible for intoducing Joy Records president Eddie Joy to our group. From that introduction we landed the record deal to record Hootenanny. After the summer of '63 when Hootenanny reached #38 on the billboard chart (with a "bullet" by the way) we all went off to college, Don to Notre Dame, Brian to Georgetown and me to Holy Cross. We recorded a couple more records that went nowhere. The summer of '64 we added a fourth member, John Cadley, who was a classmate of mine at Holy Cross. John is a talented song writer and currently has a song "Time" recorded by Lou Reid on Lou's latest album titled "Time". We sang as a quartet throughout the summmer of '64 in clubs on Long Island, NY. We are the definitive "one hit wonder" and are mentioned under that heading in Wikipedia, along with a lot of other groups and artists. The whole experience was a gas for me and the other members. We had a reunion in West Virginia a few years ago at a mountain resort....we sang and ate and talked about kids and life. |

I lived in Badin Hall at Notre Dame in '63/'64 and was asked to play rhythm guitar (yes on Don Connors' Gibson) for that Collegiate Folk Festival performance of the ND Victory March. I was lead guitar player for the ND NIGHTLIGHTERS, a popular Notre Dame rock band back then. Connor's made a comment about my being a refugee from rock and roll which drew a big laugh from the crowd. The day after he sold the Gibson J 50 to a local dealer (traded it in for the Hummingbird), I headed down to the dealer and bought it. It's now my son's favorite (and only) acoustic. (I think he prefers his PRS.) I loved Don's "Nobody Knows You..." as he performed it at the ND Folk Festival. Hope he's well and prospering. |
