Enjoy the party, expect a big bash. You won't get another Significant Birthday for 10 years. (Although you could probably make a convincing argument for your 42nd.)

Steve Parkes: those lovely people at Sainsburys sent me a voucher for some Thorntons chocolates, all personnally addressed for me, so I got them and ate them. They were lovely. I thought of your Tesco's fake QS whilst eating them, and gloated.

Aint sending you chocs, but the thought is there.

(no apologies to Les Barker)
One day, during a choir practise at church, one of the ladies of the choir was seen playing cards and scoffing chocs from a box she had concealed within her robe. The choirmaster was most displeased and said, "Why are you playing cards and eating chocolates in church?" To which she replied, "Look mate, these cards and chocolates are a set. They are my prayer book, my almanac, my calendar, and my bible. AND they are MY chocolates.
"How so?" said the choirmaster, (who was not quite "the ticket" if you see what I mean)
"Well, you see sir," said the lady (with a twinkle in her eye from knowing she was onto a right barn pot)
When I look at the Ace, I think "Aces are high" so I get high on chocolate.
When I see the two, it reminds me that there are two sorts of chocolate, milk & plain
When I see the trey, I think of Cadbury's Milk.
When I see the four, it reminds me of the four apostles, Nestlé, Cadbury, Fry's & Mars.
When I see the five, it reminds me of teatime, and a box of assorted biscuits.
When I see the six, it reminds me that chocolate is better than six.
When I see the seven, it reminds me of an old Austin 7 motorcar, which is an old crock.
Crock rhymes with choc, so I pop one in my mouth.
When I see the eight, I ate another one.
When I see the nine, it reminds me of After Eight Mints.
When I see the ten, I remember that there is nothing but news on TV at this time, so I go and make myself a chocolate drink.
When I see the Jack, I am reminded of a flat tyre. When I am deflated, I eat chocolate.
When I see the Queen, I think, "She's putting on weight, I bet she eats chocolates"
When I see the King, I remember that Elvis died from eating too many hamburgers, so I stick to chocolate.
When I count up the number of picture cards, it comes to twelve, plus two jokers. No joker is having MY chocolates!
There are thirteen tricks. So I perform a disappearing trick with a Flake and two Maltesers
There are four suits, and I remember I left my Mars Bar in the pocket of the grey one.
There are 365 spots. The number of days in the year that you can eat chocolate.
There are 52 cards. The number of liquorice allsorts in a box.

So you see, sir, I am having a good time with my chocs. Don't you go spoiling it, or I will wipe my sticky hands on your nice white surplus and you can explain THAT to your wife!

Well, it's here - the 40th post and the party day that is....

I had the first of my birthday treats last night, a blat* on a bike, a good pub dinner and a Jimi Hendrix tribute gig.... bloody marvellous. This afternoon, it's off to the Dominion Theatre to see the Queen musical 'We will Rock you' and this evening, a pleasant time with friends and at least 2 chocolate cakes. Being 40 may have it's advantages after all!

Will PM chocolate address, that's very kind of you.

The musical 'We will Rock you' was fantastic, I was totally engrossed and my arms and hands ache from so much clapping along.

The real birthday is on Tuesday and I have the ordeal of work to get through... there have been lots of whisperings in corners that stop when I walk past.

Oh, and for those who don't know, 'blat' is a biker term for a good fast ride out for no real reason.

Liz,

Congratulations!!! I always thought you were much older than you are. At least 60----maybe 70---or else I'd've come on to you much sooner. Ah, the vagueness of cyberspace. Is it all an illusion? Is this life all an illusion??---------- But now, with me, it's a moot point. I've waited too long. (And now, sad to say, IT is not long enough. Not much can get done when your point gets moot.) Oh, the humanity !!

Have a fine B-day----and many more !

See? SEE? There are a disproportionate # of birthdays in September, nine months after the Midwinter holidays. People deny it but it's true!

Welcome to perimenopause. It is no big deal, except your hips go south and spread, you get jowly, you need "moisturizer," and suddenly the wrinkles are no joke.

But 40 itself?? nothing.

from one chocaholic to another,
you are smarter than you ever were,
and you know everything the sweet young things do, and much more,

My hips went south years ago - I have an hourglass figure, it's just that most of the sand is at the bottom.

Found a chocolate cake in the cupboard today, we forgot to eat it last week at the party. Ho hum....

Midwinter holidays - yes, it's usually a combination of cold weather or getting drunk over Christmas/New year that does it. I'm a direct result of the long cold winter of '63/'64. My god-daughter is a New Years' eve 'ritual' result.

October has a lot of birthdays for much the same reason.

I've been celebrating by going to 3 rock gigs in a week!

Today is International Very Good Looking Damn Smart Woman's Day, so please send this message to someone you think fits this description.

I hope Champagne Carol gets this too!
