2004 Obit: UK Songwriter Tony Hill

Not recent - about 3 weeks ago but I only found out last night. Tony was one of the best songwriters that we have had around here (Manchester) for a long while. Martin Gittins performed 'Ninian South' and 'Bouncing Billy Barker' for us last night and while the former had shivers running down my back the latter had me in giggles (again!) Another good un gone:-(

Anyhow - There is a memorial do for him on Saturday the 2nd of October at the Ukrainian Club in Cheetham Hill. Tickets are £5 and you can PM me here for further details or get in touch with Martin at marting.icteachers@whsmithnet.co.uk

Dave.

Sorry to hear about Tony. I used to see him around the Manchester clubs in the early 80's and got one or two songs off him including Ninian South and Servant of the Company - a Paul Connor song that Tony used to sing. I'm sure I've got a few tapes where Tony's singing some of his songs at the Unicorn and the Star Inn - I'll have to dig them out. He gave me one of my first paid gigs at his club at the Millstone and we always had a good chat when we saw each other.
Tony - if your reading this in the ether, say hello to our mate Harry when you bump into him.

Mark

Have only see Tony a couple of times in recent years but saw and enjoyed him mostly in the 70's at the Ring-O-Bells in Middleton and (if i'm not mistaken) at Pete Farrow's club at the Black Lion - Salford where Paul Connor appeared quite a lot.

RIP Tony.

Tony had long-term connections with the Full Circle Folk Club, and was the organiser at one time. I don't know the full details... perhaps someone else can shed some light?

At the time of writing the date for the Memorial Concert given on the website is incorrect - the date given by DtG above, surprisingly (ducks a flying fist!), is correct!

When have you ever known me to be wrong, Brenard.

Well, OK, don't answer that...

I am so sorry to hear of Tony's death. I remember him coming to sing at Harry's club at the Unicorn many times. His Ninian song was one of my favourites.Lesley Boardman thought the world of him, as did many others among us.
My condolences to his family.
