Looking for group that sings this song

From: GUEST

It is a song from the early 90's. Its kind of Jamacan, but with rap.

The main part of the song consists os "na's".

It goes a little like this:

naaaaaa na na na naaaaa na na na naaaaaa na na na naaaa na na na naaa na na na naaaaa.

I don't remember the lyrics, but it would help to find the band or artist. Its been so long!!

What happend to no images in threads Joe?
It isn't an image, Clinton - it's HTML. The reason for no images from other sources is that it can screw up loading a thread. That's not the case for plain HTML. besides, it was fun...

Given the pattern of naaaaa na na na naaaaa's "Land of a Thousand Dances" gets my vote, although Wilson Pickett would be my likely candidate. Verses are a sort of 60's rap, listing dances (Do the Watoosi, Shake it with Lucy, Ride your Pony, with Bony Maronie, etc)
Cheers, John.

Just a thought, but...

Though it was mid-80s, "Montego Bay" by Amazulu (originally by Bobby Bloom in the 70s)? And they sang "oh oh oh oh..." instead of "Na na na na..." Apparently there's a line dance they do to it now.

Try "Here Comes The Hotstopper" by Ini Kamoze. It was part of the soundtrack to a film called "Pret a Porter" in 1995.

It is definitely "Here comes the Hotstepper" as fat B*****rd says. However, the Battlefield band, on track 12 of their live album "Home Ground", do an extremely funky version, interspersed with other songs such as "with a little help from my friends" and "Let's twist again.." and "Donald where's your troosers". To increase the madness levels to maximum they throw in several tunes such as "Mari's wedding", "Atholl Highlanders" and the Fairy Dance. Interestingly, the audience, clearly prefer the tunes.

I am fascinated (and pleased) that so many people are putting serious effort into a query that actually gave us pretty little to work with.
So, original Guest, would you let us know if you have found it, and which one it was? And while you are at it, you might consider joining us (for free); it's a fun community.

I'm reminded of an episode of Here's Harry starring Harry Worth (showing my age here - it was a 1960s BBC (UK) comedy show.

Harry goes in and infuriates (as only he could) by requesting a song where the lyrics were Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha (spoken slowly and sepatately). Turned out that the song he was looking for was the Woody Woodpecker song.

Drummer Cosy Powell had a hit song with the Naa na na naa ... "lyrics" in the 70s. Sounds like this could be a remix of that with some reggae overdubs - but I've no clue who might have been responsible.

"DI DI DIDDLEY BUM DIDDLY BUM A DI DO, DI DI DIDDLY BUM DIDDLY BUM A DI DO DI DI DIDDLY BUM DIDDLY BUM A DAY?"

If it does then it's here

Ini Kamoze's Here Comes the Hotstepper (which is definitely the one originallty sought in this thread) 'borrows' that vocal refrain from Land of A Thousand Dances.

The British 1980s female-vocal one is probably Bananarama's cover version of Steam's 1960s hit Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.

hi there,

the 80s song im still trying to find is definitely not Bananarama nor is it Ini Kamoze. The song sounds sounds like Annie Lennox singing
an Enya song...only more upbeat

I have been trying to figure this out too. It took place in the mid 90's. The lead singer had a headress like the PLO (Arafat) pattern.

It was played today on the Today show, 11/12/09 at about 835 AM during Meridth Viera's segment about her dog.

It is a cool tune and cops Wilson Pickett's Land of a Thousand Dances, but with a slow funk beat.

All I know is that this number is played very often at football games in the U.S. It almost always happens when the outcome is no longer in doubt and is played by the home team's band or over the PA system as an "in your face" slap at the losing team and its supporters. Real sportsmanship. You know; nyah, nyah, nyah, etc.

The "Na na na" song that the original poster is seeking is Lady Saw's take on "Rich Girl"

It could be "The Land of 1000 Dances", I don't know who wrote or recorded it first, but there is a great version by the Battlefield Band, they play it as a parody-medley called "Band of a thousand chances". It is on their LP "Home Ground" from 1989.

Not sure which song our original "Guest" was looking for, but I'm also curious as to what that song is that TJ in San Diego mentioned

I think that one is an instrumental, but the fans of the winning team sing "na na NAH na NAH na NAH - Hey!"

There's a doctorate waiting for the bright young folklorist who can document the incremental variations which slowly but surely transformed the Elizabethan hit "Fol the rol diddle i day" into today's beloved "naaaaaa na na na naaaaa na na na naaaaaa na na na naaaa na na na naaa na na na naaaaa".
