09 Sep 04 - 11:13 PM (#1268201) Subject: Lorcan Otway and Kossoy Sisters on WFDU! From: WFDU - Ron Olesko I am very pleased to announce some very special guests will be joing me this Sunday on my WFDU-FM program, Traditions. Lorcan Otway (InOBU to Mudcatters!)will be joining me during the 3pm hour to share some of his songs. Larry is a brillant songwriter whose songs focus on the human condition. These are not naval gazing songs, but songs that remind us of where we fit in on this planet and the work that needs to be done. I am anxious to talk with him and to present his music live on the radio. During the 5pm hour I will be featuring an interview that I taped with The Kossoy Sisters. Perhaps you weren't around in 1957 when their first recording with Erik Darling was released. (I was born that year!) You might remember a few years ago when a song from the LP, I'll Fly Away, was featured in the soundtrack of the film "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". Since then, the Irene and Ellen have released a new CD and they are collecting songs for another! I had such a wonderful time chatting with them as they reminisced about the folk revival and brought us up to date on their involvement with music since then. Their voices sound as beautiful as ever!! WFDU-FM can be heard at 89.1FM in the NYC area. You can also listen online through our website - www.wfdu.fm . TRADITIONS can be heard every Sunday afternoon from 3 to 6pm hosted by myself and my co-host, Bill Hahn!! I also have a few other surprises in store, I hope you can join us!! 10 Sep 04 - 02:09 AM (#1268289) Subject: RE: Lorcan Otway and Kossoy Sisters on WFDU! From: GUEST,Gerry "These are not naval gazing songs..." Very nice typo. There was some evolution in the marketing of the Kossoy Sisters 1957 album. I've never seen the original, but on a vinyl re-release maybe from the 1970s they were given equal billing with Erik Darling (and a mention of someone else, Robin Roberts or something like that [but not Robin Roberts the pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies], who sang a couple of songs). Then on a CD from the 1990s their album was combined with one of Darling's instrumental albums and as I recall the Kossoy name doesn't appear anywhere on the CD. I like that 1957 album. It's astonishing to think that the follow-up took nearly 50 years! |

(I'm not sure whether WFDU is an NY station, or can just be picked up there on the frequency you've given.) It's going to be a tricky time for me anyway, but I will set aside all else to catch Larry. Can you give some idea what his time slot is likely to be? Full marks for having him on, by the way - I bet it will be an interesting discussion! |

I've got a first -class connection, and what I'm hearing is first class too - Bill Bill Broonzy, Dylan, and much else that seldom gets airtime in the UK. WFDU has been added to my list, and I'm looking forward to hearing Larry loud and clear tomorrow. |

13 Sep 04 - 08:03 PM (#1271545) Subject: RE: Lorcan Otway and Kossoy Sisters on WFDU! From: Peter K (Fionn) A big vote of thanks to Ron Olesko and the internet for bringing Lorcan/Larry/Lor/InOBU right here to my desktop for an hour or so on Sunday evening (as it was in GMT-land). Strictly speaking, I was due elsewhere after the first 20 minutes, but Larry's thoughts, lyrics and singing were so absorbing that I let my other plans slide. It must take a special kind of nerve to sing, both unacompanied and to your own guitar, and - for chrissake - play uillean pipes live to air. But Larry carried it off splendidly. Oh, and he threw in a nice tune on tin whistle. A pity I couldn't stay on for the Kossoy Sisters, but I was in enough trouble as it was. Anyway, having discovered WFDU, I'll be back for more. As I said earlier, I heard some great acoustic blues on Saturday, while testing out the link ready for Larry's spot. |
