14 Sep 04 - 01:36 PM (#1271963) Subject: Tech: does netscape block messages ? From: halaswell I'm beginning to wonder if Netscape 7.1 is blocking messages. The reason : A while ago I tried to register with Ebay - forgot my password - tried the 'send me my password' opton MANY times, but none were received, although I did get some automatically generated emails from ebay. - thought it was somthing about Ebay. BUT, today, I registered with celtic Radio, that requires registering with Live365 - but no confirmatory email recieived - so I can't activate the account. I have successfully registered with other places (today included) Email IS coming in from a different email address. I have XP. The junk mail option is disabled - but that is only supposed to flag prob junk - not block it. I can't imagine either organisation would contain words that would trigger a censorship mechanism ? I can manage perfectly without either site, what is bugging me is the the thought that netscape is deciding what messages get through. Any ideas would be much appreciated. H |

If you just access your e-mail through netscape but you account is thorugh your ISP or another service it is possible (indeed probable) that your e-mail provider is filtering. You'd be surprised what gets filtered!!!! |

From: halaswell Hi MMario, E7even are paid to provide a service, which I think makes them the ISP,with netscape used just to collect the messages. I also have several different email programs resident on my computer to retrieve my mail. That means they access it on the server, load it completely onto my computer, and I have set it up to then delete it from the server. I can also reach the same email accounts via a web interface, and that is where I see the filtering that goes on with my account. For ages I couldn't figure out where the spam was going (this is several years ago) after getting messages saying there was suspect spam to look at. I finally found a link in the web mail to view the spam. Every so often something I want ends up in there, such as things I've sent myself from third party websites, like you mention. Mostly I just delete it all without more than a glance at a few names. I just now deleted 155 spams from that online spam collector for one address. See if you have a comparable web interface for your mail. I use Netscape's Communicator (the old version--the new one was messed up when AOL bought it), Pegasus Mail, and Eudora to retrieve my mail from the server. But I have to use the web interface via a browser for all the rest, because it won't move off of the server unless I move it to the "Inbox." SRS |

From: GUEST,Peter from Essex You may have rules set in your email client, those should be tailorable or you could try a different product. Pegasus is free and doesn't interfere with the rest of your PC configuration. It is quite possible that your ISP is zapping messages without reference. I know from other sources that this happens quite a lot. |

It does not interfere in any way with anything, as far as I can tell. Have used it for years - even the older versions still work well, but the newer ones allow even more safeguards for incoming evils. I use it with Mailwasher, which is an external viewer/filter/bouncer/shielder/deleter utility. Robin |

From: MaineDog I know that Juno will block messages from conservative or religious organizations when the spam filter is on. They will not, however, block adds for body part enlargement, or nigerian scam offers, etc. |

From: celticblues5 I've been using Netscape almost exclusively for the last few months, since the big problems with IE surfaced, even though Microsoft has released patches & fixes and so forth, and have had no problems with Ebay, Mudcat, Hotmail, or my usual mail (through my local ISP). My local ISP DOES filter bulk mail, though, so I would also recommend that you contact your local server to see if they do this, as they can mistake mail from someone you do want to do business with for junk (which is just logical - how can a machine differentiate between bulk mail that you want and bulk mail that you don't want?) - you should be able to tell them specific groups from which it is all right to let mail through. |

From: halaswell Thanks folks, On further thought, I supect the ISP has blocked stuff as, in the 4/5 months we've been on broadband I have not had a single spam. Netscape let through - but flagged - anything it thought may be spam, actually just ads from companies I do deal with. - on the whole this this is good, but can I have been that lucky , or is there a very efficient filter somewhere ???? The helpline rate to E7even is extortionate - I'll look for an email address for queries. My other half registered on Ebay (using my PC) without problems, but he used Outlook Express - and didn't forget his password. Re Ebay, I think I'll establish extra email addresses & register with Ebay again from scratch. I tried to re-register with the existing email addresses - but it recognised them & wouldn't let me re-register. Computers are great fun, right up until they won't do wot u want em to. From: Q (Frank Staplin) Although I preferred Netscape, my broadband cable service told me that they support only IE with service and backup, and nothing above Netscape 4. So much for free competition. I think they had to keep Netscape 4 something because a number of schools still use it. If something is being held up, I haven't found out about it. I have learned, however, not to send political cartoons to the at-work address of a relative who works for the state of California. Both of us got notes that inferred we were trying to transmit dangerous material. They also condemmed a baby picture sent as an enclosure. |

From: halaswell WELL, Downloaded Eudora (v easy), thanks Foolstroupe, it is a program that E7even says it supports, but I couldn't get it to work properly. Eudora could send emails to 3 different e-places - but I couldn't get access to any sent to it. BUT, the 365 reistration emails came through , after 24 hours, but what the heck. And, I went back to Outlook express & created an alternative identity planning to register with Ebay that way. The settings according to the instructions didn't work, so after a few hours, in sheer bloody-mindedness I put in 'wrong' info .... and dozens of emails appeared, going back to July, and including my registration details with Ebay. I changed my Ebay address to Netscape - & it works. Whew. Ignore this bit - a whinge -other half gets home, I give him the good news, he sulks as I've been using Outlook Express - 'his' program. Tough. He chooses to use my Pc rather than his laptop or get the wi-fi organised to connect his Pc up. Whinge over. Hi Q - Haven't tried sending attachments yet. Long term I'd like to be able to send digital photos - but given how long it's taken to sort this - posting a print may be less stressful ! Much thanks to everybody & hope you all find workarounds.
